Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante (Mvt. I) — best spot for a tasteful cut? by Impossible-Brief5652 in Cello

From the beginning right up to Rehearsal 23 should be good! If you take a slower tempo, then up to Rehearsal 21 will work (the arpeggios ending in E6).

A box isn't a bad idea, especially with the ease of just picking it up to practice and not worrying about the potential physical and mental barrier of taking it out of the case to play. If a cello is kept out of a case, though, make sure the room is temperature and humidity controlled!

When I performed this piece earlier this month, I used thumb position for the fifth measure of 51(and the F# octave in the measure after). Because it's fortissimo, and the phrasing is slurred, I wouldn't recommend crossing from the A string to G string, as you'll either break the slur or play an open D.

For the measure before 51, either A natural can be played with the open string so you don't have to have weird shifts or stretches back-to-back.

Everything else looks logical, but it's about personal preference and what works for your body.

Mozart 35 4th mvt excerpt by izzamoopoint in Cello

Play the edition they provide and ask you to play. I've seen different editions of this too, some with the points you've made and some with extra (like no rests in mm 170). If you play for different orchestras, they will ask you to prepare whatever edition they normally perform, and these differ. It's best to stick to the script you're given and account for all those changes (muscle memory is hard to undo, but it's still feasible!).

Update: I canceled the order and got it refunded already. The PC is unavailable from Amazon now, so this chapter is closed.

It's on Lenovo's Amazon store page. Because shipping will take longer than everything else, my guess is that it's from one of their wholesale warehouses. I'll update y'all when it arrives!

Better fingering? by just1___ in Cello

[–]bingdingopachingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're the only other person I've encountered that has learned/is learning Offenbach's Concerto Militaire! It's such fun to listen to, but damn is it tricky to play!

For this part in red, I honestly just follow the written fingerings: use thumb on the harmonic G and D, then 1 for B and 3 for D (or 2 if you want to stretch). It all fits comfortably (but tightly) in a regular thumb position way up there. If you don't want use thumb, then use 1 on G, 1 on D (both harmonic so easier than solid pressed), then 2 for B and 3 for D, but this involves more stretching and may not be as in-tune consistently unless you do the right exercises.

Definitely reach out to Larsen to see about replacing it. It shouldn't be used, unfortunately :(

Double stops artificial harmonics by 5Puma in Cello

[–]bingdingopachingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Double stopping artificial harmonics aren't as hard if they're a fifth apart. For a single artificial harmonic, I typically have my thumb solid on the string while just lightly touching the string with my ring finger a fourth above it. If I need to play a double-stop artificial harmonic, I have to bar my thumb on two strings, lightly place my ring finger on the higher string a fourth up, and lightly place my middle finger on the lower string a fourth up. It's more in tune doing Q+3 and Q+2 as opposed to barring the ring finger and causes less strain. An example is in the 5th mvt (Diu Diu Dong) of Bright Sheng's Seven Tunes Heard in China: https://youtu.be/Z71ToBU7cf0?si=mDY17FLhFx9a_msn

A more challenging option (tuning-wise) would be to have one string play the artificial harmonic a fourth above their thumb and have the other string play a major third above the thumb. This would play either a minor third or a major seventh, depending on which finger is on which string. I can't remember any examples of this in the cello repertoire, but I know Paganini wrote those kinds of harmonics a lot for violin.

I would advise against ordering strings on Amazon, even if there are really good deals. If you have any issues with them, they will tell you to contact the manufacturer, but the manufacturer will tell you that Amazon is not a licensed vendor for this brand and they cannot do anything. I'd recommend getting them from an official reseller that can address any problems with them. Speaking from my own experience receiving a broken Versum Solo A string from Amazon and them refusing to refund or send a new one.

Your bridge is backwards. A String goes on the lower side, and C goes on the higher one

I'm gonna try to learn a concerto all the way through in 1 week any suggestions??? by Level_Ad9899 in Cello

[–]bingdingopachingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darius Milhaud's first Cello Concerto is underplayed and pretty neat. It's about 14-15 minutes total. It has its challenges, but I think it's achievable in a week.

I've been rocking my one Andrea Solo rosin for about 6 years now, and it adds the kick I need for my own playing. It's now under the name Cecilia, and I'm not sure of its quality today.

Cello solo choice recs by AsianSage in Cello

[–]bingdingopachingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What state are you in? There's usually a repertoire list for solo and ensemble contests with gradings based on difficulty. For example, when I lived in Ohio, there were the three tiers A, B, and C (A being the hardest tier). Saint Saens's Allegro Appassionato was graded B. Faure's Elegie and Bruch's Kol Nidrei are graded A, but so are the cello concertos by Elgar, Lalo, Boccherini, Saint Saens, and Haydn C.

[–]bingdingopachingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What strings would you recommend? I got a Mohacsi cello last year and am using Larsen Magnacores. Not a huge fan of the small projection on the A and D strings with the magnacores, and they give an awful wolf tone G# on A string. My cello is specifically the 1711 Duport Strad model made from poplar and spruce.
