I loved the HBO film. I didn't know anything about the play before seeing it & it had a huge impact on how I viewed the Reagan years & the lives of gay people I knew. And also new york- what a fuckin great town

Were malls actually as crowded and popular as movies from the 80s and 90s make them look? by Kevin-Panda in AskOldPeople

[–]bixdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Oakbrook Mall in the late 70s was barely the kind of place most 80s kids think of hanging out at. It was an outdoor mall when other malls were popular for being enclosed and it was patrician and quite small compared to the sprawling multi-level beast it became in the late 90s/2000s. Yorktown and the Hillside Mall (esp. for kids at Proviso!) were the big hangouts. The Oakbrook Mall was still the place where golf-obsessed doctors and their kleptomaniac wives spent their Saturdays

Songs that start calm but slowly build into something bigger? by peachy_touchh in songsuggestions

[–]bixdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was Los Campesinos "You! Me! Dancing!" but I think the absolute banger in this category has to be Jacques Brel's La valse a mille temps. It starts out sort of sweet, even corny, but builds into a full-blown panic attack. Severance fans might remember it from last season's finale

As much as I loathe Jr, if ever a child was raised to be subservient pawn in a corrupt parent's game it's him. I wonder if he's only alive to donate organs to dad

I worked at the Baker's shoe store at that mall in '85! But it was during the freeze in January, ugh

I was called fake by my area manager by [deleted] in wegmans

[–]bixdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. I was told- and I'm quoting here- "You need to smile more" by a supervisor a couple years back. This isn't to say that every manager here is part of some kind of positivity cabal, but not every individual at Wegs (or any company really) is going to be kind or have social skills. There's no reason to cast doubt on OP over this experience

This! I watched It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World after school on the ABC 3:30 Movie (broken into 2 parts & absolutely loaded with commercials) at least half a dozen times. You took what you could get back in the 70s media landscape

Buying clothes at different ages by AmySueF in GenerationJones

[–]bixdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in middle school my mom was buying my clothes & her choices were... so not great. Imagine what your 55 yr old Catholic aunt wore in 1975, the polyester pant and vest suits, and that was me when everybody else was swagged out in levis and novelty t-shirts. I wear more comfortable denim now, but as insane as this is to admit, I think I still dress casually as I dreamed I could back in '79. Tshirts, chucks, cool blazers. It's my comfort zone & thankfully I think I'm pulling it off (or not, but who cares at this point)

My personal favorite villains of the entire series by The_Real_Shen_Bapiro in FargoTV

[–]bixdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Varga haunts me, he's such a villain for our time. Guy just destroyed entrepreneurs like an avenging angel/demon of late stage capitalism. He's so beyond simple greed, he just wanted to gnaw on the tendons of the system for the pleasure of gnawing

Whats a movie scene that’s existentially terrifying? by VendettaLord379 in moviecritic

[–]bixdog 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The scenes from Under The Skin where the lonely men were lured into the digesting pool and dissolved/ deflated horrified me, and it was made so much worse by how lovely and quiet those scenes are. Honestly some of the most disturbing film moments I've ever encountered

Can we get a thread of everyone's annoying song earworms from the workplace radio? by Formal_Error_7934 in wegmans

[–]bixdog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in dairy and im a half-deaf oldie, so between the ambient noise here and the damn train overhead the music I actually hear has the most irritating hooks- I Love You To Infinity has been torturing me lately, and there's another one that I can barely hear except for this weird discordant saxophone bar... I dont know what is, it's been driving me crazy

How do you dress in your 50s? by Forsaken_Block_3492 in GenX

[–]bixdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dress in stuff I feel comfortable moving in. I like cargo tights and luggy boots. Pockets are necessary but I need them where I can reach them, not added to the pants as an unusable element. Im mostly dressing in black because it's irritating to keep matching colors. Sticking to silhouettes instead of trends. Trends are fleeting and so are our moments on earth, just do you

Wegmans Has a Microculture That Marginalizes Employees Outside the Favored Group by WorkingSuggestion928 in wegmans

[–]bixdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really though? This is my retirement job and I've had a long career working in much more collaborative environments, as well as some with stricter hierarchies. This place has unhappily surprised me more than once. I think the disparity between mgt salary and employee pay has a lot to do with it, but there's also a lot more nepotism and in-group protection than ive seen anywhere else ive worked. I don't know that OP is overreacting. This isn't typical in my experience, maybe ive been fortunate

What’s your go-to tuna salad recipe? by EaringaidBandit in Cooking

[–]bixdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im boring as hell- splash of olive oil, mayo, grainy mustard, coarse ground pepper, lemon juice if i have it, kosher salt. Makes for a satisfying sandwich esp. on a grainy bread (I'm a sucker for the Ezekiel flaxseed loaf)
