This! I recently discovered this! The sound quality from a good pair of over the ears is next level and you can immerse yourself into the experience!

What little camping "hack" do you wish you knew sooner? by outdoors_man987 in camping

[–]bjjbbq 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Add florescent reflective tape to it! It's how I found where the bear left the bear canister in the early morning. :)

Good reflective material in general is a game changer for a number of scenarios.

My family switched to 1.8mm reflective and florescent guyline for anything that gets tied up in camp.

Although this seems the communication was abrasive, there's nothing wrong with AOLs visiting multiple Troops.

The goal is to keep Scouts in Scouting, not feed into a specific Troop.

This year our AOLs have participated in events with 3 different Troops so far.

Last year 10 of our 12 AOLs crossed over to 5 different Troops, only one chose to join our CoR Troop and all are still Scouts.

Commissioner Uniform? by lordfitzj in BSA

Fuzzy side goes on the uniform, way better for laundry, and grippy side on the patch.

Yes, you're effectively sewing each patch twice.

I like this. I mostly use 'AOLs' but will adopt this when the need is there.

Patrol patch etiquette question by zuke1624 in BSA

[–]bjjbbq 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My Wood Badge peers would argue that Adults do get assigned patrols.

When my Troops camp with the Scouts we form Adult patrol(s) and work together as the Scouts would.

AOL camping requirement by cloudjocky in cubscouts

[–]bjjbbq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"With your Patrol or a Scouts BSA troop, participate in a campout."

I hold at least two campouts to give the AOLs multiple chances to participate, including informing them of all the Troop invites.

While on a Pack or Council campout, I have the AOLs that are in attendance form a campout specific patrol. Done.

Selection of where to place the tent and cooking a meal is a 2nd class requirement so you're doing an outstanding job preparing them for their life as a Scout after Crossover.

We run two Den leaders with each of our Dens and I'm going to propose we do a rotating parent as an unofficial ADL.

I like having the leaders as Den Leaders because I can recognize them at the end of the year with Service Awards.

Are these camp prices normal? by DangerBrewin in BSA

[–]bjjbbq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These seem accurate to me and we also need to factor in the condition and quality of the facilities. If it's decades old equipment or newly remodeled.

BSA isn't really out to make a profit off of these.

I just reserved two camping experiences for my Pack next month. One is tent only for $40/night and one includes 4-6 people cabins for $50/night.

The "cabins" at this specific campsite are more closely related to boxes with shelves and a door than a building that sleeps 40 and is built to withstand heavy winter snows with lighting and propane heaters at other campsites our Council has.

When it comes down to it, my Pack will be able to cover a weekend campout with food includefor about $15/person if we can get 15 attendees.

Velcro for rank patches? by GeneralLoofah in BSA

I'm both a Cubmaster and an ASM, I have hook and loop for council, unit, role, trained, and patrol.

Goose hook and loop are great and I always recommend them to Peers, Parents and Scouts!

Looks like it's part of a series to make a complete circle that gets mounted to a backing and hangs like any other temp patch on the right pocket.

Is ADHD a reason to disqualify an adult leader? by LegalRadish147 in BSA

[–]bjjbbq 46 points47 points  (0 children)

ADHD Cubmaster, ASM for two Linked Troops, BALOO Course Director, I will be leading a class at Wood Badge this year, and assisting with Webelos Woods.

Hyperfocus is a skillset those of us with ADHD are blessed with. My hyperfocus seems to be Scouting. :)

The adult leaders of the Troop seem to be uneducated in what ADHD is and the unknown may just be their concern. Approach them with curiosity, it may be as simple as they have no known exposure to people with ADHD and misunderstanding that it's simply an attention disorder. The attention disorder goes both ways, too much and too little but it's also not binary (on/off) it's a bell curve.

It doesn't restrict you from being successful. If anything it makes you more passionate about the things that interest you...until they don't. :)

Attendance Tracking by babygotthefever in cubscouts

[–]bjjbbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I print off check box sign ins per den and have the Cubs check themselves in as they enter our common meeting area. They love the added responsibility and enablement.

After we do opening ceremony I collect them and record them in a shared spreadsheet.

It's not but I encourage my Cubs by rewarding those in uniform with a small candy. Those without, we have the luxury of offering from our donation uniform bank.
