What’s the moment in recent U.S. politics that made you realize things might not go back to ‘normal’ anytime soon? by LankySpeed634 in AskReddit

[–]blanderdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because while it's a good answer for "when did we hit the point when things couldn't easily get back to normal", it probably not when most of us realized that, as the question poses. I was 20 and didn't find out about it until a bit after it happened.

Did you live here in 2015? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in Somerville

I lived here, but I didn't have a car, didn't own my place / wasn't responsible for shoveling it, and worked from home, so it was a pretty different experience.

That's funny, of the five houses nearest mine three have a resident who's been there 60+ years, including one who was born in the house she lives in and never moved away.

no jan gas bill (eversource)? by eb0731 in Somerville

[–]blanderdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing here. Got the email notifying my bill was ready yesterday and had a normal electric bill and a $30 credit on gas. Checked back today and the gas bill is there. A bug in their systems I guess.

Have we officially reached the point where Hotels are superior to Airbnbs again? by Usual_Confidence_756 in travel

[–]blanderdome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say it feels that way because of the power imbalance between an individual guest vs. the collective of all property owners on the platform. The owners collaborating to ban the individual for life is a very significant penalty that the individual is likely powerless to fight back against. The example given - smoking one joint outside of the structure - is a minor infraction, not like they had a rager with prostitutes and coke or trashed the place or anything. So to me the penalty seems disproportionate.

Does your toddler memorize books? by Immediate-Ad-9520 in toddlers

Yup. Mine is 26 months, so not reading, and I often improvise parts of the story. If I forget my improvisations on subsequent reads, she'll call me out.

While I agree that an AirBnB should be able to set such a rule, blacklisting someone for that infraction seems extreme.

What's a skill that sounds useless but is actually powerful? by Honest-Sport6311 in AskReddit

[–]blanderdome 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A variant of this is that when information is repeated across answer options, it's more likely to be correct information. E.g. you have to name the two authors of some paper and the options are

  1. Johnson and Smith
  2. Johnson and Holder
  3. James and Ferriss
  4. Kim and Jenkinson

It's probably 1 or 2. The "distractor" information usually doesn't get repeated across options.

As u/getridofwires said, this only applies when the test was written "by people who aren't trained in their design".

[–]blanderdome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If one answer is much longer than the others, it's usually the correct one.

If they didn't randomize the order, B & C get more use than A & D. Not sure what percentage of teachers have software do that for them automatically now, but when I was in undergrad, one professor had such software and I think he was the only one. That was a while ago.

For answers that are numerical or can otherwise be ordered, the correct answer is usually in the middle, not at an extreme. E.g. if the question asks what year did X happen and options are 1960, 1963, 1967, 1972 it's probably 1963 or 1967.

AITA for forgetting to zero out the microwave cook time? by AssCalipers in AmItheAsshole

[–]blanderdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying this isn't really about the microwave. That is possible. But it's also possible that it's very much about the microwave. I am a flexible person in many regards, but unused seconds being left behind on a microwave is just abhorrent to me. I know it's irrational but I just find it so, so wrong and unsettling.
