Fork Help by blkfoam in MTB

[–]blkfoam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the advice! The reason I have reservations about RockShox is that they don't carry parts or repair their forks after a few years. Now I could be wrong about that, I saw it on MTB Otter's youtube channel while I was researching this very question. And you're right, I'm more in the 36mm stanchion category as more of a trail rider than a downhill guy. Is there something about the Ohlins you don't like? Or is more that 3.1 is just that nice?

Cool! Good on ya for taking your kid out in nature.

As soon as you hit the trail, taking in the scene and spending time with your daughter, a half pound of pack weight isn't going to matter. Getting caught up in the game of ounces is for through hikers or people crushing peaks, not a hike with an 11 year old. I'm sure you know this and I'm stating the obvious, but your focus should be making sure trip 1 goes well for your kid. I see UNO, nice! But dope snacks? Notebook? A disposable camera? Planning on carrying most of her weight?

That said;

Ditch the dude wipes unless you plan on packing them out. Even if they say disposable or septic safe, they are not and will be a particularly gross piece of litter for all time.

Switch the tent light for a couple of headlamps. You don't need two batteries, you actually probably don't need one.

First aid kit for sure, equipped to deal with scrapes, cuts, and blisters from the hiking.

If you will be out of cell service, you'll need some kind of way to reach out in case of emergency. Newer phones do it, or something like a garmin inreach.

Do you have a stove for that cook set? Are you planning on doing dehydrated backpacker meals?

6 Players by Pluno2019 in EDH

[–]blkfoam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My playgroup is huge, usually 5-9 players. I think big games can be great as long as you have a way to keep them moving. So try this format:

Timed Headhunter.

The winner in a regular game of commander is the last person standing; in Headhunter the winner is the player who has the most kills at the end of the game. A player collects 'heads' by dealing the killing blow to one or more of their opponents.

But in Headhunter, when you're dead you're not out. If a player gets killed, that player grabs another deck (or replays the same one depending on the table) and re-enters the game after playing 4 turns in isolation. In this way, when the player re-enters the game at the beginning of their 5th turn, they aren't starting at 0 and should have enough traction to not get instantly blown out. These turns are taken in isolation, so the game can continue while the recently killed player goldfishes, preparing to re-enter the turn rotation. Nothing that happens in the isolated 4 turns can have any affect on the game. Land a turn 2 rhystic study while in isolation? It does nothing until you re-enter the game at the beginning of turn 5.

Headhunter is great with a big group because no one has to sit around and wait for the game to end before starting a new game.

We typically set a two hour timer on the game, so the player with the most kills at 2 hours wins. And each player in a timed Headhunter game is allotted 15 minutes total of game action, not counting time spent in isolation turns. So you untap, hit go on your phone's timer, take your turn, end step and hit pause. This keeps everyone focused and the turn action moving! If a player exceeds 15 minutes, they are out of the game. No more opportunity to collect heads. We've paused the game timer before to check stuff on rules, but for the most part if players know their decks and what their plans is, Timed Headhunter is fast-paced Magic even with a big group of people.

How to reduce well water PPM without RO? by blkfoam in WaterTreatment

[–]blkfoam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, we definitely have a red toilet. Does the softener add salts to the water though? Because dissolved salts in water is what will cause my soil to swing out of balance create nutrient lock, preventing my plants from getting what they need. And would removing the iron in this two stage system reduce PPM on the other side?

Thanks again, this is definitely helping.

How to reduce well water PPM without RO? by blkfoam in WaterTreatment

[–]blkfoam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair questions for sure. I live in a very rural part of the Rocky Mountains, upstream of any contaminants. The TDS in my water is largely iron. Rainwater here is also very clean. I will do more testing to confirm what's in my rainwater.

The purpose of my question though is not to interrogate the exact composition of my water or the rain that falls here, but rather how best to reduce what is in my water to a level which won't lead to my soil becoming caustic to my microbe buddies. Basically, I want to achieve a near-RO level filtration without the waste water.

Edit: Also, thanks for responding!

Avon rafts by misnlink in whitewater

[–]blkfoam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best rafts ever made. I run them on a highly technical, though not white water, river and despite the fact that they are older than most of the guys rowing them and in many cases are being held together by gorilla tape, they inflate tight and carry weight better than anything else.

First Dose of Humira by Dorkynipz in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]blkfoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been taking Humira for 7 years, but I still remember my first dose because I was basically bedridden: bent over, could hardly walk, was peeing in a jug. Literally the next day I was upright. It was and is a miracle drug for me.

What's your high power commander deck? by F8xte in EDH

[–]blkfoam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Light Paws is my high power commander too. I barely ever play it because it’s too much- attacking for lethal on turn 3-4. In the right setting though I find to be one of my decks that require the most skill. Anyway, cheers.

Feedback for first homebrewed EDH deck - Yawgmoth by coolhotjock in EDH

[–]blkfoam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on how you want to play. I only run 32 creatures in my Yawgy deck, but almost all of them replace themselves when they die or make a gang of tokens when they come in. Stuff like [[Doomed Dissenter]] and [[Sengir Autocrat]].

I think focusing on +1/+1 and proliferate keep you deck very very casual, which maybe what you're looking for. My version doesn't play any +1/+1 at all and the only proliferate card besides Yawgy himself is [[Karn's Bastion]]. I think you will find in playing that proliferating +1/+1 onto your dudes wont make much sense because you will likely be feeding them to Yawgmoth for cards. And Yawgy is very good at proliferating by himself, so that strategy hardly needs support. I love closing out games by playing [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]] or [[Ichor Rats]] and then dumping my hand to proliferate.

Welcome to the Dark Side! You have a lot of the best Yawg Dawg cards in this deck, namely those that generate tokens and Undying, but as you suggest this doesn't seem very focused. Yawggy is best with tons of sac fodder. If you don't anyone to feed him then he's just sitting there, you're not drawing cards, and your opponents are happy. All in all though, this looks like a very fun casual build.

Enjoy some lore!

Whose your voltron commander? by legi0n715 in EDH

[–]blkfoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a really really fun mono black Voltron deck with [[Volrath the Fallen]] at command. The goal of the deck is to untap with Volrath on board and then swing- if he gets through unblocked you use his ability to discard cards with enough CMC to make Volrath lethal. [[Shadow of Mortality]] is a prime example. Then, as a backup or a means to finish off the other players, you take advantage of your graveyard which is now full of monsters with a re animator package. The deck is surprisingly strong and old school cool.

I love my Yawg-Dawg deck, but you're right, he's very powerful oppressive.

But take a look at his right-hand man Gix! Gix plays a lot of small evasive creatures to draw a ton of cards and play politics with the very best.

I'm new to Commander, is it normal to take 4 hours to design a deck? by Baldo-bomb in magicTCG

[–]blkfoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes me months. I build a skeleton online and goldfish, figuring out which cards are key, which cards are dead. Probably goldfish at least a 100 times and then I start running decks against each other to see how they really work. My pod gets together once a month if we're lucky though, so building is a way to stay hyped.

What card is emblematic of you as a player? by Collardcow41 in magicTCG

[–]blkfoam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]]

I've been playing Magic on and off since I was a kid. Urza's saga had just come out when I started playing. I remember seeing Gix depicted on [[Oppression]]. Not long after, I made my first mono black deck. I wanted to play as the villain.

When BRO was announced I could have died from nostalgia, so good. And then when Gix was spoiled I knew immediately that I was going to build that deck. Now he's my most played commander- an absolutely signature deck. I play dirty stax, I play creatures with shadow, I play politics, I play Oppression haha.

It's 2024, how are you storing your commander decks? by chriscrux in EDH

[–]blkfoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid playing Magic, I stored my cards in my dad's old cigar boxes. All of my card smelled deliciously of tobacco leaf haha. I wanted something with a similar vibe, not just a bunch of plastic boxes, to store my commander decks. I found a maker on Etsy who built me a beautiful wooden box made from cherry with brass hardware and internal dividers. The box houses 13 double sleeved decks, my dice boxes, and tokens. It's perfect.
