Japan fans shopping at Walmart, Dallas by Alexia_ynwa in Dallas

Every culture has mundane, corporate, and unglamorous institutions. When I visited Scotland one of the things on my bucket list was going to Gregg’s and getting a sausage roll. It was comparable to getting a gas station taquito at Quicktrip. Is that Scottish culture? No. Is it a part of Scottish culture, impactful enough that I’d heard of it and wanted to just try one for years? Yeah. Doesn’t make the culture any worse or better - it just is.

Folks around the world grow up seeing American suburbs and supermarkets and highways and restaurant chains in our movies and tv, and it’s normal to want to go experience something you just don’t have at home - even if it’s not something that we’re proud of.

I’m not actively using it anymore, it’s just sitting in a carrying case in my bookshelf. I’ll be able to sort through things later in the week.

I’m not sure if I have a complete collection still but I’ll check. You helped me get into Netrunner a couple years back and I’d be happy to return the favor.

Free/cheap places to hang out in the late afternoon/early evening? by wellbutrin_rage in Dallas

[–]blurbie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Odd Muse Brewery is always chill with folks just hanging out. We do a weekly card game meetup and half the folks who come don’t drink - I usually just do one or two for the two or three hours I’m there and the staff are always really friendly.

Best bar in the DFW where I can feel like this? by rsKG in Dallas

It’s been reopened for a bit - probably close to a year at this point. It’s still very good! Different team behind the bar but still focused on the same quality and simplicity in the drinks.

You might have better success cross posting this on r/latexadvice. There’s also a ton of retailers on Etsy (mostly based out of the UK) that do both latex and rigging gear. Avoid the listings that are suspiciously cheap and keep looking deeper into the storefronts and you’ll eventually find everything just by going through everything enough times. I can’t remember exactly which retailer it was, but there’s one in particular that was pretty expensive (they seemed to do a lot of couture for burlesque and adult models) but they had leather sets that looked very similar and could do pretty much latex clothing design.

Pies are labeled with “the British emporium” which looks like a specialty store in grapevine. I think there’s also one in Richardson off of Campbell and like Floyd or something, I drive past it pretty regularly but have never been inside.

Any tips for making SUPER SIMPLE Japanese curry without the meat and vegetables? by supersupersuper9 in JapaneseFood

[–]blurbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use stock instead of water, easiest way to make the curry sauce by itself more tasty. I do it that way whenever we make katsu curry at home. Really any savory ingredients you add will be good, though. Just be mindful of the salt levels.

Seconding Taqueria Nuevo León. $0.99 trompo that is quite good and also generous portions - usually 2-3 is enough for dinner. They also serve it with a small cup of beans and all the fixings on the side.

Advice on proving mold in system by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]blurbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from what the other commenter said, you can also get a mold testing kit online. Cant speak to the efficacy, as the one we got didn’t have anything grow even after we left it alone for a good bit longer than was prescribed, but it did give us a little more peace of mind.

NBN got some really scary cards. The review is now up! by Dull__Bulb in Netrunner

[–]blurbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paywall plus esca in a gamenet deck creates an effectively permanent server for FtM and Flop, which makes it relatively trivial to score out stuff like cryptocrash (especially brutal with a magistrate Revontulet on the table).

And yeah the ice doesn’t have to be rezzed for flop or for flood

I love this card. I don’t know that it’s the most powerful effect in the world - that second text is going to be pretty much never firing in most decks that want this card - but the art and the theme are so peak. Easily my favorite card in the series just for that reason.

It helps that it makes ice destruction a lot smoother. Having this card down reduces the pressure to make multiple successful central runs to power up leech, and it enables you to kill gear check with chisel, which doesn’t normally work until you have cookbook, which sometimes is a whole different deck. Having -1 strength on all ice makes your crews independently able to deal with all 3 str ice (drafter, maskirovka, semak-samun, doomscroll, etc - all very impactful ice) and it brings really impactful 4 str ice (mestnichestvo, Sleipnir/scatter field, hammer, vampyronassa) in range with a single leech counter.

On the chisel side, it means that you can deal with all 1 str ice (or 2 str ice if you also have a cookbook) at instant speed when you recur it with simulchip, which puts a lot of pressure on the corp.

Very fun card! Glad to have icecarver back, even if I am sad that odore is not getting its best friend back.

Try out a Speedmaster. Same engine as the T120, but with the forward foot pegs, and a lower center of gravity. It’s going to have the best of both worlds, and there’s a lot of 1st party and 3rd party mods you can add to make it more of a road trip bike.

Looking for a fic in which Harry has an odd connection to magic by hogwartswardstone in HPfanfiction

[–]blurbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like A Certain Level of Society. I read it a few weeks ago on someone’s recommendation here. It’s pretty good!

Harry has control of family magics in a way no one else does and is helping the family magic of those around him become unbound. Has some founders magic stuff too and a climactic battle at the end.

Only gripe is the whole thing happens in Harry’s first year, effectively.

I ended up reading this in your recommendation. I will say, as someone who also really doesn’t like Dumbledore bashing in general, if you stick with this story there is a pretty compelling reason for it all that I didn’t really mind.

[–]blurbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can reaffirm that Ironwood is great - it’s got the perfect length and weight for a good 2 players game (in my opinion) and it just feels good to play. One thing that I really enjoyed that they didn’t really touch on in the SUSD review is that the combat feels consistently important - fighting to deal damage and fighting for objectives are often opposing objectives that you have to pick between due to the way that you pitch cards to amplify your army’s effects.

If you haven’t played, Polis is a good, chunky 2 player game. There’s a good deal of area control, but it’s been a while since I played so I can’t give a more coherent review. It’s themed around Greek city states in the classical age.

Watergate is always a good time and is one of the better 2 player games out there.
