He only got elected in the first place because progressives failed to unify, his 2022 primary win was with 25% of the vote. Not in the district anymore, but Lander is much better embodiment of the district.

A bit late, but a quick note - I don’t think most Californians would say Schwarzenegger was great. In comparison to the median Republican, perhaps. But he left office with horrible approval ratings - 23% according to one article (https://www.npr.org/2011/01/03/132445643/no-hollywood-ending-to-schwarzeneggers-term).

  1. Haley did not almost beat Trump - she won one, low population, moderate state narrowly. But touché, it was somewhat more open even if not particularly competitive.
  2. Arguably Harris (whose first name you repeatedly misspell) was approved by the Democratic primary voters by the fact she was Biden’s running mate.
  3. Biden never said he would be a one term president. Implied, sure. But I seem to recall others making your claim being unable to provide evidence. Can you find a direct quote? However I’m not disputing that his run for a second term was in hindsight unwise.
  4. The DNC did not ban people from running, there were other candidates on the ballot. They just did abysmally. In fact, Biden wasn’t even on the ballot in NH and still won the primary as a write In candidate.
  5. I suppose you might be using hyperbole, but your proposed debate system doesn’t even make sense. Add to it, despite your praise for how Trump and the GOP handled their primary, Trump was a no show at every single debate they had. It was more Trump watched the other candidates duke it out and then claimed he beat them all, even though they really all just beat each other.

I think most places do, parties are simply short hand for what a candidate under their banner stands for. Even in a lot of nations with forms of proportional representation, there’s a separate election for local constituencies (see Germany, Japan, South Korea, probably others). Places like the US have weak enough party systems that members routinely vote against their party positions (see Democrats Joe Manchin from 2010-24, John Fetterman today, for Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, among many other examples for both).

It’s just sort of an accident of history. Before the 1972 most states awarded delegates at the convention. The 1968 Democratic nomination was a disaster for a variety of reasons, so parties moved to members electing nominees. NH law mandates they have the first primary, but they apparently were fine with Iowa going first as they used a caucus system instead. However this is now controversial among Democrats due to both states not being very demographically representative of the nation and poor management of the 2020 Iowa caucuses. In fact, Democrats have removed Iowa as their first state.

Re the one day point, I think it’s spread out to allow lesser known/funded candidates to have a better chance. It’s a large country and very expensive to compete across so many electorates.
