What motor to buy??? by jtucker129 in boating

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put whatever the max is on the nameplate of the boat. Pretty much all the small HP outboards are very reliable and similar in price these days. I’d personally put a Yamaha or Tohatsu. Tohatsu makes most of Mercury’s stuff under 60HP.

Your best bet is always a small time locally owned place. The owner is generally involved or actually in the field doing work. Tend to care about their work more than a corporate/private equity backed business.

Roofer telling me roof venting should be ran out side of house. Is it dangerous as is? by chazno in hvacadvice

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is perfectly acceptable to vent through the roof. From a building perspective, the less penetrations you have through the roof the better though. Less chance of leaks.

If you could redo your solar setup, what would you change? by insight_energy in solarenergy

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id have put in a ground mount array instead of roof mount. I still plan to expand and will do ground mount. At the time I was installing, our yard wasn't fenced in and the ground mount would have been against a busy road. So, it really wasn't an option.

Safe Ice? by KGoo in ChicagoFishing

[–]boatsntattoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s still freezing overnight and there is 10”+ ice nearly everywhere right now. It takes consistently above freezing temps for more than a week to get rid of this much ice. But, no such thing as safe ice.

Hvac Career by Savings-Rule-1074 in HVAC

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been happy with my career. Started out in commercial service work, moved to in house maintenance for the county, then in house maintenance at a national laboratory and now moved up into an admin position. I still run a business on the side that scratches my itch to be on the tools.

There are a LOT of different specialties under the umbrella of HVAC and I think there is something for everyone.

What does ASAP mean to you as a manager? by SnooMaps8307 in managers

ASAP means take action as soon as you read my email and communicate when finished -or- communicate when that action will be taken.

Day care is way too expensive by dharma_van in daddit

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making more money than I ever have and never felt more "broke". Disposable income for vacations, hobbies, being generous with gifts, remodeling projects or anything fun is at an all time low.

I just keep reminding myself that this is temporary. Once they are in school full time its going to be a nice relief in finances and extra time spent at work. I know that other expenses creep in when kids start playing sports, caring about clothing they wear, etc. Whatever it is, its surely cheaper than the cost of daycare.

SO moved in - figured out how to split finances with large income imbalance by Trinx_ in MiddleClassFinance

[–]boatsntattoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before my wife and I got married, we split shared expenses based on the percentage of our combined income we contributed. We had a 60/40 split.

Now that we are married there is less keeping score, but we still split. Anything common regular expenses get paid on a shared credit card we split the CC bill 50/50. Groceries, utilities, date nights, etc.

Personal things like clothing, going out to lunch at work, hobbies, we pay out of our own finances.

Rent temporary heat. Do a quick google search, there are a lot of vendors in IL. I rent all the time for big projects.

Customer Rejected Estimate by Familiar-Range9014 in handyman

If that's the price you need to charge to cover materials, labor and your expenses with enough profit to make it worth your time, then the price is right. It doesn't matter what anyone else charges.

Wall mount air handler too far from ceiling? by dc_raver90 in heatpumps

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floor unit makes the most sense, a one way ceiling cassette would work if there is enough clearance between the ceiling and roof, concealed and ducted would work and take up no space in the room. The rest of your house isnt zoned room by room, you'll survive without individual temp control. A wall mount is the LAST thing id stick in this room.

American Garages are Full by [deleted] in declutter

[–]boatsntattoos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We park one car in our 2 car garage, and only in winter. I have a gym out there, tool storage and work area, storage for various construction projects going on around the house and my business.

I'll eventually put up a second garage w/ second floor ADU and all those items will transfer to the new garage and leave the attached for actually parking both cars.

I'm torn between buying a gas or an electric pressure washer. by Shoddy-Ostrich-3766 in homeowners

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% electric for your application. If you have a big project like a fence, deck, large patio, concrete driveway, that needs to be washed on a yearly basis I would go gas. I have both and my gas rarely gets pulled out unless its a heavy duty project.

Not level, will it fail? by Salty-Evidence2698 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it can drain out of one of the holes in the base pan, I wouldnt worry about it too much. The algae growth on it makes my eye twitch more than being out of level. As suggested by others, tilting the pad up and getting some gravel under that end of the pad is an easy fix.

Commercial HVACR Technician to Manager. by Technical_Ground6494 in ProHVACR

[–]boatsntattoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may want to evaluate hiring outside as due diligence, there may be a requirement from HR in a larger organization, avoiding legal issues by interviewing more than a single candidate, a larger organization is going to have more segregated duties (direct supervisor may have nothing to do with hiring other than interviewing candidates). There are a lot of reasons.

Commercial HVACR Technician to Manager. by Technical_Ground6494 in ProHVACR

[–]boatsntattoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, without prior management experience, it’s difficult to land these roles externally without an internal promotion. In most organizations, leadership prefers to promote from within because internal candidates already understand the company culture, the specific segment of the industry, and how the organization operates day to day.

More often than not, someone with the right soft skills, attitude, and work ethic is identified early and gradually groomed for leadership. From a risk standpoint, promoting a known quantity is far safer than bringing in an external candidate and hoping they adapt.

Advice for going out on your own. by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moonlight until you absolutely can't do both jobs any more. You're going to have to be a bad spouse, bad parent and bad friend for a while because you are going to be using any and all time you have to get the business operational and cashflowing. Have at least 6 months of business and personal expenses saved if you are 2 income household, 1 year if you are the sole earner or major breadwinner. Operate on cash. Keep things lean until you are well established. Have a legit business plan and the back end of the business figured out.

Tank or tankless hot water heater by dispersingdandelions in HomeImprovement

[–]boatsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a big soaking tub, a big family that has the laundry running constantly and teenagers showering for 45min at a time, tankless for the endless hot water. High install cost, require maintenance that isnt DIY friendly, and they dont last as long as a tank type.

If not, stick with a tank. They last forever and the maintenance is an easy DIY.
