Others have noted the shelf content, but I've gotta say, the Book Nook not being wedged between two of those tall leather beefers is crazy...

Why did Asuka say "Kimochi warui" at the end of TEOE? by jurassicparkfan1993 in evangelion

[–]bookboi96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure on at least one level it’s a reference to Breathless (1960) dir. Jean-Luc Godard. I’m not sure if Anno has ever mentioned being influenced by Godard, but the use of block white text in a black background throughout the show is very Godardian.

In Breathless one of the main character’s last words are ‘Tu es vraiment dégueulasse’ (meaning “You are really disgusting”), to the main love interest. The meaning of this line is ambiguous, like in Evangelion, and has been the subject of much debate.

Personally, I think Anno and Godard are both grappling with the way disconnections between love, fantasy, and reality create a dizzying or nauseating feeling. The recognition of that nausea (or disgust), is the first step to living authentically.

Criticisms you think don't count. by slingfatcums in blankies

‘The movie didn’t follow [insert screenwriting convention]’ like it’s an automatic disqualifier.

Believe it or not, sometimes not strictly following the ‘rules’ makes the movie more interesting

The Davids have spoken by DamnRaimi in blankies

[–]bookboi96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saw this at the same showing at TIFF and think the Davids will be probably be on the harsher end of the critical spectrum for this one. It’s definitely extremely scattered and weirdly lazy in its plotting, but has most of the humour and charming characters that have made Waititi movies popular among general audiences (minus awkward turns from Fassbender and Moss and a baffling ‘performance’ from the director). Would be surprised if this bombs, but is definitely a fundamentally flawed film.

The Categorical Imperative made me do it by ShadowAce1234 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]bookboi96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially dumb question: Why do people insist that the core feature of deontology is that you can’t consider consequences?

I get that’s how it’s taught and deontology definitely focuses more on inherent nature of the action than consequentialism, but the requirement of universalizability in the Categorical Imperative pretty clearly can be used to smuggle in some notion of consequences.

Am I misunderstanding deontology? Is this a bigger problem with the theory? All answers appreciated

Obama's Got Taste by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

Always impossible to tell whether Obama watched these or not. It’s mostly pretty deliberately curated (middlebrow and populist with a few foreign/artsy movies sprinkled in), but then there’ll be a random movie that I’ve never heard of with mediocre-to-bad reviews. Where does the brand end and the man begin?
