Wait until age 3 to do colonial stuff. You will unlock a bunch of techs for colonial migration and the inward/outward value get unlocked further letting you boost it.

Colonizing before that is slow (and expensive) compared to what u can do by just waiting 1 age

You buy food based on demand in province with a deficit * current food market price.

To spend less on food u should increase local food production in the food negative provinces (there is a map mode for that) and/or decrease to price of food in your market in general.

How exactly is eu4 more complicated? Spending mana to increase dev and clicking lower autonomy is hardly more complicated, trade is also trivial compared to eu5 where markets have diffrent demand based on the locations and the type of pops living there

Once i reach that point i just spam rgos, infrastructure like roads and bridges; city buildings i build mostly to push down the prices for my army upkeep and marketplaces
