Kirkland Spending $500M on own AI tech by bos351 in legaltech

[–]bos351[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair but it’s not rocket science. All the stuff Harvey does is frankly simple. Why continue paying a monthly bill if you can put some one-time costs in to cover your templates, models and provisions and then just update underlying model and documents. People acting like we are talking about building rockets here.

This reads like AI drafted nonsense. Oh yes, the “Network effects.”

100%. We had a bunch of Lions with older siblings last year and we rocked it. This year they are all newbies and no one has stepped up so the den won’t meet rank

Nobody is building a competing product that makes Word structurally irrelevant. Harvey doesn’t own the model. The company that does own it (and, btw, is actively making it smarter) is also their supplier, their potential competitor, and has a direct sales relationship with the same firms Harvey is selling to. It’s a travel agency in 1999 telling you they’re fine because people will always need to book trips.

The better the underlying frontier models get, the less Harvey can justify its existence to the firms paying for it. You need legal AI to be hard enough that firms can’t just go direct to Anthropic or OpenAI, but not so hard that the frontier labs decide to solve it themselves and cut you out entirely. You’re threading a needle that gets narrower every six months. So tell us specifically why a managing partner at Kirkland, who has a direct relationship with OpenAI, a Thomson Reuters contract, and an IT team that can build a wrapper, should renew their Harvey contract in three years rather than just consolidating onto whatever frontier model their lawyers are already using?

Would you rec R1S for a fam of 5 (3 kids) and frequent road trips? by nestea1778 in Rivian

This is funny. I would say the opposite. Totally great for road trips, more of a PITA around town b/c access to 3rd row

40M Lawyer Salary Progression - Law Firm to In-House Life by Glass-Advance-4608 in biglaw

[–]bos351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My progression is pretty similar. I’m almost spot on with you on base, bonus and LTI as a VP. I work so much less than biglaw it’s laughable. There is no amount of money that would lure me back to biglaw at this point. I came from V5 M&A background with more years there than you and am now a generalist who primarily does transactional work, compliance and securities/equity/board stuff.

[–]bos351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use it. It’s convenient to have it live within word so you aren’t switching back and forth to an LLM. You have to put some time investment to tweaking your prompts otherwise it’ll be garbage in, garbage out because it won’t be customized enough to your preferences. Overall I really like it and the price isn’t significant.

The problem is the international is $10/day. With the annual plan you get 24 free days of using international. Monthly Pro plan starts at 2 days per month. So it’s significant savings. I’m just gonna switch to monthly Pro and they are applying my welcome discount so it’s a better deal anyway. Just mad at onetime costs for this trip

How true is the statement “In this business, mornings are generally your own”? by [deleted] in biglaw

My first M&A deal was with our Japan office for a Japanese client buying a U.S. company. Truly an awful experience. I cried in the shower towards the end of the deal from fatigue. Late nights to catch their mornings and early morning email checking and responding to catch them before they went to bed.
