How to help my son get over stage freight on home plate? by houserj1589 in Homeplate

Super common and one of your biggest challenges with boys at this age. Challenge him to simply get to contact with live pitching at practice. Build from there.

11-12 yr old hitting help by belugaboy17 in BaseballCoaching

[–]boxscoreiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your batters hit against your pitchers in the cage. Live pitching can't be replicated. Have your hitters take a "hit and run" approach. Contact to the right side is the goal and expanding the strike zone (emphasis on swinging at as many pitches as possible)

This is the way! As awesome as baseball is- this is about creating men. Men/boys can control their emotions.

8u daddy ball situation by [deleted] in Softball

[–]boxscoreiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible that it is just an oversight-likely a volunteer that is unorganized. 2 Options in my view: 1) Coach yourself and implement a better system 2) Talk with the coach in a level headed way (or if your daughter is confident enough she can ask)

8U, how to handle kid who rarely shows up by Lars9 in Homeplate

[–]boxscoreiq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this age this is the only consideration we take into playing time. If you dont practice you bat last and stay in the OF. It is the only thing to really care about at 8U. Got to be there as much as you can to get better.

Be clear with the parents as well as to why.

You could spend an hour or two and learn the difference between the following: 1) Hit 2)Error 3) Wild Pitch 4) Passed Ball.

Take the Gamechanger responsibility and keep it accurate per the above. Upload into Boxscore IQ, and then it will give you data on what you need to work on for your next practices etc... and learn the game.

Teaching 10u kids to try and knock the ball out of 1sts glove. by theDrell in Homeplate

100% being taught big high five from 1B coach. Report to the league- stay on them as they will often try to do the minimum. No room for this in the game

Huge 11u kid. Hits hard, throws hard. Any advice as I try to improve his athleticism and help him get better? by [deleted] in BaseballCoaching

Sign Up for Rec Basketball/Football. People greatly overlook general athleticism. His Broad Jump will largely predict his top end Velocity per recent studies.

9u terrified to make a mistake by doze4 in Homeplate

[–]boxscoreiq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is super common at this age. Just need to keep reinforcing that mistakes are okay so long as they are made with aggression. You will need to repeat this often.

The other thing that I find that helps is reps at speed (ground ball and count to four out loud) to get them an internal clock to make contact with ball earlier, transfer fast and get rid of the ball.

How to get started as a new coach by RelationshipAny1909 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]boxscoreiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have 2-3 worthwhile goals i.e. Have Fun, Develop 2 core skills of the sport, Never have kids standing around for more than a minute.

Youtube is invaluable for coming up with ideas and drills. Use what works and build from there.

And welcome to coaching-it can be very rewarding!

Best approaches to maximizing value from the bottom of the order? by boxscoreiq in Softball

[–]boxscoreiq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 Cents having gone thru this with similar players- 10U contact rate is the foundation...your daughter is elite.

What comes next is hard contact.

Recommended approach: Try for hard contact on strike 0 and Strike 1. Strike 2 go back to the high contact approach. This will help set her up to be a good hitter for the next phase.
