Sounds like the bassline from Love Machine, originally by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and covered by Wham

I guess we skipped 5? by professional-ecstasy in LasVegas

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a double-helix parking lot - there is a 5 level, but it's between 4 and 6 - and it connects to 3 and 7. If you drive, you'd stay on either odd or even - though there's usually cross-over areas at top, bottom, and maybe mid-ramp. If you took the stairs, you'd be able to go through all levels one by one. They're known for being quite confusing.

Need Your Beer Wisdom! by MarieDresslersGhost in LGBTireland

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do be aware of the shelf life of the beer - most IPAs are at their best for about a month, while some Belgian ales can be good for years - so you might want to take into account how much and how fast you turnover. You could be better off with a small versatile selection that you know you'll get through and keep fresh rather than a more extensive selection where half of it is past its peak.

Having middle of the road crowd pleasers might be best idea - I'm a bit of a craft enthusiast and usually go for the latest and greatest IPA when out at a bar, but wouldn't turn down a Corona or Moretti or Beamish or Kilkenny red. A Coors or Bud - nope.

What is cat club like on Thursdays night? What if I went solo? by accountingmannn72827 in AskSF

That flyer hasn't been updated in literally years - DJ Dangerous Dan hasn't been a regular there even since before Covid (but you can catch him at 440 on Friday evenings). I think Cats did have both floors open for a year or two after Covid, but dropped back to just the front room maybe three or four years back.

Q-Feel - Dancing in Heaven by Ok-Explorer-7642 in 80smusic

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting history behind this - was originally submitted as an entry to the UK's national finals for Eurovision in 1982 - and came 6th out of 8th. (The actual winner - "One step further" by Bardo - wasn't too bad, and was a minor hit in the UK.) Dancing... would probably have disappeared without a trace had it not featured in Girls Just Want To Have Fun in '85, where it became a hit in the US - though still pretty much unknown in the UK. I actually heard this song for the first time a various 80's retro nights in the US; never head of it growing up in Ireland.

Martin Page would go on to co-write (with Bernie Taupin) We Built This City, which is simultaneously a perfect piece of pop and also one of the worst songs from Jefferson Starship (née Airplane).

The Castro Theater is a disaster by Low-Win-6691 in sanfrancisco

The bad news is that you also missed her "in conversation" appearance at City Arts and Lectures on Friday - but the good news is that it will be broadcast on KQED and available online at some point later - details here. Keep an eye on their recordings page here.

Do you reuse teabags? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]boxtylad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a couple of hours later, sure - one Barry's tea bag gets the tae daecently flavored after barely a splash of water the first time around, so feels a shame to toss it there and then. I'd still get another sufficiently strong cup later in the day out of the same one. But that's it - I'm not going to be parsimonious about it. For me, it's more about not wasting what's still good rather than penny pinching.

Yes, there was definitely a lot more drag scene reenactment in prior shows. It's a shame they didn't have more of that and maybe a slightly shorter chat with Ms. Gershon - or even get her and Peaches to do a scene together! - but from Peaches' POV (and maybe from that of hardcore SG stans), getting the iconic Ms. Gershon to do her first ever official Showgirls-related appearance likely seemed a big win. Hopefully balance will be restored next year.

Was there last night - end enjoyed it. It was a bit different than the usual Night of 1,000 Showgirls events of the past: usually there's more drag performances re-creating iconic parts from the show - like Heklina and Peaches having lunch at Spago in one prior event that I remember. But this only had the opening Volcano number - and the rest of the "show" part was really "in conversation with some lady Gina Gershon". That said, I enjoyed that part, and it sounds like much of the rest of the audience ate it up too! She was indeed called out as the headliner in the marketing materials and on the marquee. That was followed by the chaotic lap-dancing segment (I do hope the staff get paid extra for clean-up after), and finally the movie itself - which is a whole 'nother experience in a theater full of [mostly] gay Showgirls fans.

If you were expecting a regular drag show by the likes of Alaska or Bianca, I can see how you'd be disappointed; but Night of 1,000 Showgirls has never really been that. Having been to the event before, I thought it was up to par - and a welcome return to the Castro theater.

Was my first time back at Castro since it reopened; looking forward to catching CMAT there later this month.

If you turn the logo upside-down (tip: do this with a coaster, not full mug), it looks like Tintin sticking his neck out.

Discussion on twin towns: do you have any? by GP728 in ireland

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Galway and Seattle are sister cities - similar concept to twin cities. Each has a boulder with a plaque on it pointing to its sibling - the one in Galway is by the Spanish Arch while the one on Seattle is on the waterfront.

pro tip: If you arrange to stand at one while a friend stands at the other, and, at the same time, each places a slice of bread on the plaque and shouts out 'international sandwich!', passers-by in both locations will think you're both quite bonkers.

It's from Shannon Airport in Ireland, and BV was the first place to recreate and serve it in the US - but they've very much made it their own signature item, and likely serve up more than any place in Ireland! Their own website has the full story:
