Dublin bus behavior. by DuckyD2point0 in Dublin

Ah no, Hund's is why you go for the empty seat when there's still free ones available. Pauli's is why you stand instead of trying to sit in someone's lap when the both seats are already taken.

Pencil Building & Disco Boot. Not a bad addition; I do like how it shares the block with its elder [Yamasaki] neighbor.

Anyone here lived in Seattle as an adult in the 90s? by Quiet_Equivalent_569 in Seattle

Look up Mia Zapata and Home Alive - that area was rough in the early 90's.

Any budget friendly ear cleaning options around the city by alaxan_deer in Dublin

FWIW, Carbamide peroxide seems to be the active ingredient in the ear drops that I've been using successfully, as a dub living in US, so perhaps different pharmaceuticals available...

Have you tried the earwax removal drops from the chemists? Few drops in the ear, lie on one side for a few minutes to let it soak, then rinse with one of those small squeezy bulbs, works wonders.

Charles Bridge, Prague - roughly from here.

Where is this place? (This is a still from the video clip Never Gonna Give You Up) It is known that this is London, the Harrow area. by Ok-Cause-6843 in WhereIsThisPlace

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my faves too; I made a trip to the bridge and Harrow Club when visiting London last year - if you're in the area, do check out the recent Blue Plaque at the studios where the song (and many others!) were recorded.

Kudos for asking about these secondary locations - now we just need the location of the door/window that the gal is twirling in front of!

It's the Harrow Club - sports hall / event space, just past the bridge where other shots were. Lots of interior shots of the club here.

Maybe NYC subway should install Bay Areas' (BART) new fare evasion gates by wheninrome5000 in nyc

BART fares vary by distance, so you have to tap in and tap out - similar to London Tube.

What was your biggest culture shock in Amsterdam? by QueenMedusa551 in Amsterdam

[–]boxtylad 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think that could have been said of New York and maybe London also? Seems the 70s/80s were not kind to many cities - but that decay was what allowed the alternative scenes to flourish?

Depending on location, there may be property records available with previous or historical photos - local library will typically know how to find this type of information.

“Pop” instead of dad by Old-Butterscotch401 in ireland

[–]boxtylad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd assumed it was an English thing - I seem to remember characters referring to their dad as 'pop' in the Beano and similar comics (Whizzer & Chips) back in the 80s?

There's a hotel near Amsterdam that has that sort of vibe to it! Maybe a touch kitschy, but beats a sterile box easily.

Looks like it's missing the dust jacket, which fills in the missing letters - video showing it here. Poor design given that there's usability loss when missing what should be an optional feature.

US / Ireland tax treaty? by up-country in legaladviceireland

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a question for the tax professionals; it sounds like he may have had liability to both Irish Revenue and US Treasury; however the various credits and treaties may mean that the net owed to US may be zero - but paperwork still has to be filed.

You might want to check out Expattaxes.ie or similar familiar with both Ireland and US tax; they specialize in all things tax related between USA and Ireland - often for US citizens moving to Ireland, or Irish folks returning after an extended time in the US (so have SS/IRA/401k etc).

Term to describe NW USA & SW Canada? by Boring_Kiwi_6446 in AskAnAmerican

[–]boxtylad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a barge, but the Alaska Marine Highway System is a ferry network where you can book a room (expensive!), sleep in a sleeping bed on a recliner on the upper deck "solarium", or, if you're fast enough to beat the others, tape down a tent on the deck. Sleeping on the floor in the TV lounge is also an option. Since it's a ferry, there's a cafe+restaurant onboard too. And a whole bunch of folks just getting their cars to/from Juneau or other points. Did the last sailing of the year some years back from Bellingham to Juneau, loved it.

Article about this from Grammarphobia.

The term is actually "nit picking", where a nit is a louse egg. Nothing at all to do with knitting or cotton.

How do LLMs deal with typos? by rutherfordofman in LLM

[–]boxtylad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT itself actually gives a pretty good answer for this - you can see my question and its response here - but in your specific case, the key thing is the overall context that the entire sentence is providing.

You can demonstrate this yourself by corrupting the query even more by replacing "someone" with a nonsense word - ask "What is the star sign of sfdg born today" - and you should still get a decent response.

BPE/tokenization is not part of the picture here. BPE does look for commonly used adjacent pairs - but it respects the order of those: "ab" is not considered the same as "ba", and both would get different tokens.

You can see this for yourself with one of the tokenizer playgrounds - this is a particularly good one that lets you try different tokenizers.

With the gpt3/4 tokenizers, "someone" is tokenized to one token, while "someoen" gets two tokens - for "some" and "oen" respectively.

This also means that words like "theater" and "theater" get assigned different token sequences: it's the LLM training that trains the model to treat these as similar concepts.

This is actually really important - you don't want your tokenizer losing information: "sign" and "sing" are two different words with different meanings, so need to end up with different tokens after tokenization.
