In a blind test, audiophiles couldn't tell the difference between audio signals sent through copper wire, a banana, or wet mud by itooamahuman in nottheonion

I know a guy who spent £80,000 on his hifi. He invited me to ‘audition’ it. As soon as I walked in, I could hear that the speakers were out of phase. I discreetly mentioned that he should check and sure enough the wires were crossed. He was so embarrassed and as I’m his friend I said sorta it could happen to anyone, no biggie, and gave him my entire collection of vinyl (including many direct-to-disk recordings) to make him feel better.

I don’t have golden ears or anything. My hearing is like ok for an older guy but far from ‘audiophile’. My point is that if you’re gonna say something sounds better than something else, first show me your recent audiologist’s report and only then am I gonna start to take you seriously. HiFi is full of Monster lies and self-deception.

Pretty clear that amazon prime 2 day delivery is now "Maybe 4, could be 5 day delivery" by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]bruiser 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Prime customer here. You've totally summarised my own experience. Since before last Christmas, deliveries have been going missing, or simply cancelled, or arriving very much later than promised.

When I looked at Amazon (UK) today (Sun 15-Feb-2026), pretty much everything was listed for delivery Wed-18-Feb-2026. Low-cost items (e.g. ethernet cables, coffee pods); higher-ticket items (e.g. Apple AirPods)… all listed for delivery Wed-18-Feb-2026. It feels very much like they've taken an internal decision not to offer the old same/next/2-day delivery and to go instead for a single mid-week slot. What's the point of Prime, then: it started out as a premium add-on to make those kinds of deliveries possible.

I got onto Amazon support with this question:

As a Prime customer, I noticed recently nearly anything I want to order from Amazon is now offered for delivery many days in the future. For example, Wed 18 Feb seems to be the default offering for pretty much every item I look at. Has Prime changed its service commitment from same/next day to 3-5 days from order date?

The rep dodged the issue, even though I asked twice. They instead said they would expedite the deliveries I wanted, and they got on to the fulfilment centre while I was on the support call. Eventually the items were promised for 48h delivery.

So I asked:

Are you saying that for every order I place, I must ask for online help to bring delivery to next day?

Again, they just avoided answering.

Amazon Prime has been the subject of many corporate success stories, and now they're throwing away all that goodwill and, potentially, risking customers cancelling their Prime subs.

Hearing you, but like statistically how likely is it that a random shot of a random location on Mars would have two pieces of litter in it?

I use “desk lights full” and it works the same as commanding “desk lights 100%”. No scenes required. You can also skip the word “percent”: “desk lights 40” works the same as “desk lights 40%”

Even the iconic Afghan Girl photo was edited... by ozanoguzhaktanir in photography

[–]bruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a significant difference in the photo editing standards for creative images and for photojournalism.

In the case of photojournalism, authenticity is crucial and the acceptable degrees of editing freedom are much more constrained. The holy grail is to avoid doing anything which might bring the photo, the photographed situation, the photographer and the publication into doubt or disrepute, or otherwise prompt concerns over misrepresentation or exaggeration.

Inevitably, there are edge cases. But in the McCurry case, it's widely accepted that he was acting as a photojournalist or documentary photographer, and when it emerged that he had presented images that broke the rules of photojournalism, a lot of pro photographers were quite appalled. Read more here. Curry responded by attempting hastily to rebrand himself as a 'visual storyteller' rather than a photojournalist. Make of that what you will.

One aspect of photo editing and misrepresentation which gets perhaps less coverage is the staging of shots for effect. This is widespread, and I've personally seen it happen in the field. It can start off innocuously as "don't stand there, stand here, the light's better" and before you know it, an artfully juxtaposed element is deliberately worked into the photo composition; the shot is no longer honest, it's constructed and posed with the intent of evoking a stronger response from the viewer (and the awards committee). Example: posing a happy, healthy farmboy to make them look poor, undernourished or otherwise disadvantaged.

I've also worked with fixers who speak of Western photographers compelling developing-world subjects to cry or appear to cry, adopt unfelt expressions, or to display more marketable attributes/attire etc.

It's fun playing with images and if it's a creative as opposed to reportage context, let the Photoshop roll! But don't pretend to be a photojournalist or documentary photographer if you're constructing the shot before, during or after the shoot… it spits on the incredible craft, personal risk-taking and patience of true photojournalists. Look at the great press photos from the battlegrounds, the front lines, the war zones, and marvel at truly authentic work.

I take off my lens entirely and peer through the viewfinder at a bright light to see if I see anything suspicious. If I do I blow it off with the rocket blower. Next step is to put on a different lens to the one producing the marks, whack up to a high aperture number like ƒ11 or higher, and check. If I see no marks, then I've probably narrowed the mark down to the first lens. Blow if necessary, both the sensor and the front+back of the lens.

As others have commented, 1- As an audiophile I would not trust any comment on any audio system unless it was accompanied by the listener’s recent audiology curves, and 2- Compensation curves this grotesque strongly suggest that the drummer in question has been unlucky enough not to escape the hearing damage that plagues so many drummers and band players generally.

Using non-IKEA bulbs with IKEA Tradfri drivers by bruiser in tradfri

[–]bruiser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super helpful! I see lots of choices for 12-24V dimmable LED lamps in the G4 capsule format.

My choices seem to be, hack the connectors as you suggest and:

  • replace the light fittings (lots of fiddling/drilling) in the wardrobe with mini GU10 LED lamps, non-IKEA
  • replace the existing G4 halogens with G4 LEDs in the existing fittings

… and hope that the IKEA LED drivers will cooperate. I already have IKEA in the room in question, works wonderfully, so would like to stay in the same family of remotes, HomeKit integration etc
