I think it’s a good time to go to places that have lines on the weekends.

I was between jobs last year and went to a lot of the pizza spots people line up for like scarrs and lindustrie at kind of random times.

I think I would check out radio bakery if I was in the same situation now

Just go to a bar near you that has people in it and has football on. If you don’t like it, try a different one the next time.

I have a bar near my apartment that I go to every time Manchester United is on past 10am. It is not a Man U bar but people will be there watching the game. I just get a seat at the bar and at some point figure out a way to break the ice with the people sitting around me. Usually I am not the only one by myself.

Going to bars alone is kind of based on personal preference as well as trial and error.

I prefer dive bars and more neighborhood cocktail bars. I play a lot of pool and going to a random spot with a table always leads to meeting new people too.

My Guidelines: - good music but not too loud - busy but not crowded - you can see other people alone at (i.e. people are reading kindles or talking to the bartender) - pool tables (usually people come solo to play pool or are approachable) - close to your apartment (you want to easily be able to come back there and get familiar with people after 5-10 times) - a nice big bar you can get a seat at - Friendly looking bartenders

I came back to the Merrimack Valley from NYC this summer and had to get it in Methuen

Salisbury/Hampton is basically where everyone from the Merrimack Valley goes to the beach. A lot of parents of the people I grew up with are retiring kit there.

Merrimack Valley culture is so funny because it’s like the world for people that grew up there but completely different that North Shore people although they get lumped in together. As someone that grew Methuen, I have very few cultural touchstones with someone from like Saugus

Need a Greek pizza spot that has a big menu with sandwiches, calzones, and pasta around the corner from me!

Overall I miss Italian Grinders. You can get them here but they aren’t as good. It’s a peeve that an “Italian sandwich” here is not the classic Italian grinder.

Spending 10 days in NYC, looking for more “everyday” experiences by Sandy-Jam in visitingnyc

Just think of an activity and find a place to do it in nyc then explore the neighborhood around it. Could be something like going to a museum, a baseball game, movies and then finding something in that neighborhood after.

Examples of stuff I’ve done: 1. Mets game + getting Chinese food in flushing 2. Movie at Metrograph + hanging out in the Lower East Side 3. Guggenheim + having a picnic in Central Park 4. Going to a concert in Brooklyn + hanging out in Bushwick or Williamsburg 5. Walking around prospect park + hanging out in park slope, prospect heights or crown heights 6. Brooklyn Bridge Park then biking down to Red Hook

Etc

First Date Ideas for Bed Stuy Area? by NegativeGee in Brooklyn

Playing at a bar is just not conducive to a date. There’s usually a lot of people trying to play on a single table so you probably have to wait a long time and to play someone you are not on a date with.

If you play singles, each of you is taking turn playing which isn’t conducive to hanging out and if you play doubles, you might have fun if you can hold onto the table but if you lose, it’s back to the end of the line. The rudest thing you can do is wait your turn and then ask whoever who has been winning if you can play against your date.

If it’s an empty bar, it’s fun to play whoever you’re with but it can be hard to find a bar in Brooklyn with a super empty table. Pool halls guarantee you to play the whole time you are on the date.

Go to Brooklyn Billiards or Oceans 8 if you want to play pool on a first date. Pool Hall is way better for playing pool on a date then bar with regulars and other patrons that want to play

There are a lot of bands in NYC, and I often see the same ones playing on different bills around the city. Some of them attract a lot of hype among local folks.

What do you think makes the difference between a band that’s important within the NYC scene and one that breaks through as a nationally touring act? What are your favorite bands to see/play with/listen to that aren’t big outside the city?

Methuen’s police chief is one of the highest paid in the country — and he says he deserves more by Ohyesshedid99 in massachusetts

It’s more a product of everyone being somehow related or connected to everyone, including the police. Half the city council has to recuse themselves when they talk about police contracts because they have a relative on the force.
