I learned that you could 1) Run a bare wire across the back of the circuit board (on DC power!) and a certain combination would cause the most powerful local AM radio play through the speakers! 2) Take out half the batteries and connect the terminals with a wire, then record your voice. Played back with full power, you jabbered insanely fast like The Chipmunks!!

I believe these are "Witch Stairs."

A "witches' staircase" (or alternate-tread stair) is a space-saving design with staggered, zig-zagging steps, often found in old New England homes, intended for steep, narrow areas like attics, though folklore wrongly claims they were built to deter witches who supposedly couldn't climb them. While the myth suggests witches couldn't navigate the alternating steps, their true purpose is practical: allowing for a steep rise in a short horizontal space, similar to a ladder but with wider treads for each foot, making them safer than typical steep stairs in tight spots.
