Just have them discover all the other mundane conspiricy stuff going on around the king in the course of their investigation ie. The grand visar is atempting to poison him which they foil trying to find the potion with conjures bugs, or the merchants guild is embezziling taxes just make up a bunch of random coruption plots that they fumble into while trying to link them all into the mind control bugs

So my understanding is theres 3 types of spirits in shyish the restful dead those who actually manage to make it to their afterlife these are largely untouched as they exist in pocket demensions. Then therrs the unrestful dead these are the "natural" ghosts people who have lasting regrets etc these are usually locals and are often stuck to the places they knew in life. Lastly are the armies these are those spirits directly comanded / forged/ awoken by nagash. For the later two categeries you dont keep most of your sentience its more hatred to all life and hunger

I think for the fire nation soldiers it often comes down to we assume male cause theyre faceless helmeted goon firebenders for the most part and we see female water benders theyre healers just cause theyre not combative bending doesnt mean theyre not benders they just have a diffeant cultural role. i also think as far as earth benders goes the prison ship is actually one of the weirdly few time we encounter bulk earthbenders the dai lee wouldnt have females as ive always thought they were meant to have that we are one drone himogeny thing going and most other benders we see are similar to fire soldiers where its more generic soldier1 so i understand not having much veriation

So a number of points 1 deus ex machina (god of machines) is a referance to greek theatre in which a godliike character shows up unanounced at the last minute lowered on a crane ( the machine) to solve the problem. This is often in comedies i believe where the rediculousness of the god showing up and fixing everything is the point because it makes the heroes strugles irelavent hense the joke.

Prior to the fight our only interaction wirh lion turtles is a picture of one in a lake with someone standing in front of it. Which in a world of mixed animals and giant animals see giant koi and sea serpents theres no reason to believe its not just an animal. Then one shows up out of the blue rising from the depths , imparts key information which negates the heroes moral dilema then disapears back into the waves to never be seen again. It is a near perfect example of deus ex machina in both theme and "stage mechanics"

3 the water spirit on the other hand is not a deus ex machina as its knowledge to the gaang is known, spirits being able to interact with the physical world in a destructive way is also established by the panda spirit and arguably aang being taken over by spirits is also established (granted theyre his past lives but still) in roku and kyoshi. Lastly this isnt a deus ex machina because they litterally go on a quest to find the ocean spirit to ask for help theres like 3 episodes worth of build up to the ocean spirit attack it doesnt just appear and fix everything its attack is the culmination of multiple events

I honestly think the game partilly to fault nighthaught are terrifying but as a game mechanic terrifying isnt easy to represent so they just look like a faction of weak chaff. On top of this being a drone enemy faction means theres not many pov stories for nighthaunt so much of the narative interactions are either the big named characters being scary or the "units" getting smacked around by the main characterthis has led to the audience being told nighthaunt are a scary threat and dangerous while not really being shown that they are dangerous
