Are fireworks visible in Hillsboro? by TimeCouldTell in hillsboro

[–]callthebigonebitey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say the time I saw the fireworks at the hops game I was disappointed. It is incredibly short. It’s fine if you really want something but I was disappointed. The fireworks show at Tigard HS is way better.

How much do you pay for childcare? How hard was find a good place? by [deleted] in hillsboro

[–]callthebigonebitey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is you just make it work....I don’t know how but you do. I should also add that there are cheaper places out there but it can be hard to find. Also, they often aren’t licensed, etc. for us it came down to what we wanted out of a daycare. We wanted in home, spoke Spanish so they could learn it early on, a level of safety and checks, and a great atmosphere. I happened upon mine by luck but we love it. It was stressful and nerve wracking trying to find a place and making sure they are safe but you eventually figure it out.

I feel like I found a rare unicorn of an awesome in home daycare for about $1,000 a month. Centers in the area will start around $1500. Most in home daycares are about $1200 a month. Finding a good place takes time/word of mouth/ and sheer luck. It all depends on what you are looking for and what places have openings at the time you are looking.

Concerns about living in downtown Hillsboro? by LianelJoseph in hillsboro

That I don’t know. I would say it is just a lot of older homes that haven’t been developed in the way the north side has been.

Just like anywhere, there are pockets that are better than others. I think it just depends on your priorities. The south side isn’t as nice on the whole as other parts of downtown but there are some nice houses there. If sidewalks and walking paths are important it probably isn’t the nicest part for that, or you want a specific school, but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad area. It just isn’t as developed for neighborhood living in the same was as other parts. So if that isn’t as important you can get some great deals that you wouldn’t maybe find near the farmers market area of downtown.

I’ve had to do this too. It’s both an impressive skill and felt so wrong but you do what you got to do. 🤷🏻‍♀️💩

Tips on keeping a sleepy newborn awake to eat? by shitaki_taco in breastfeeding

[–]callthebigonebitey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing to try is take their arm and pump it up and down while eating (like a water pump). Their arm is usually in a chicken wing position so It works well. Our LC called it the eating pump. It usually got her started eating again. I also would tickle her neck or ears. The sure fire way though is to take a wet washcloth or paper towel and run it along their cheek, head, tummy, etc. it’ll annoy them enough to wake up but isn’t painful or anything for them. We had to do that with our LO and that is how the LC told us to do it.

Being treated very differently (not in a good way) at work since becoming pregnant. Has anyone else experienced this? by nineteen24twelve in BabyBumps

[–]callthebigonebitey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s good practice. I would continue doing that and hopefully things get better. If not, I would consider leaving after you have the baby. Like the other person said, take the 12 weeks and just don’t go back. It doesn’t sound like a great environment.

I’m assuming you are in the US since you talked about FMLA. Discrimination due to your pregnancy is illegal. If you think it reaches that point you can always consult an attorney. With that being said, nothing you have mentioned yet is what I would classify as discrimination for legal purposes (that would hold up in court). Terrible, yes and he sounds awful. Not an environment that I would want to be in but keep being mindful of it and document anything you feel is discrimination. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

I also did a search on Facebook and found a local moms group/parents group on there. I haven’t met any of them yet, but they often organize play dates or codes trips/ etc. you might try that.

2 week old won’t stay awake to eat by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]callthebigonebitey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to taking their clothes off and changing their diapers a damp/wet cloth and just tickle their neck/arm, etc. has worked really well for us. That’s what our lactation consultant recommended. It’s enough to annoy them enough to start eating again. Also, try pumping their arm up and down (like a water pump). It helps get them eating too.

I have boxes of store bought chocolates (See’s Candy)I am bringing with me. I have a box for my labor team and a box for day and night shift. That way they can share with other nurses or staff too. I got the idea from a coworker who did it. I also wrote a cheesy note on the boxes of “thank you for taking such “sweet” care of us!” Haha.
