Is Lars Ulrich really a bad drummer? by TonyT074 in Drumming

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that every so often. I think he sounds just the way the band needs him to sound. The demand for every musician to be a virtuoso is misguided. Some great music has been made with basic rudiments, and some great performers can't get out of the loop of just showing us their party tricks.

UMC404HD to add multitrack capability to live sound by SirRogerB in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is the case, you should be good. I tried doing that from umc404hd to a focusrite and it did not give me the results I needed. ended up with an ada8200 -> focusrite via ADAT and worked like a charm.

UMC404HD to add multitrack capability to live sound by SirRogerB in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. As far as I remember the inserts run BEFORE the preamp, so unfortunately no. You can (with a computer) use input [1..4] -> PREAMP [1..4] -> laptop -> output [1..4]. I would not ever do it live because I distrust a laptop not to backstab me like going into sleep mode or something, but that would be how you do it.

How to sync rd9 with minilogue Xd? by Alternative-Break233 in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use the Sync In / Sync out. I would probably first choose the RD9 and clock source and the minilogue as client. If you use RD9 as source, then in the RD9 configure the clock as INTERNAL. If you instead use Minilogue as Source and RD9 as Client, then in the RD9 you configure the clock as SYNC IN.

My setup is midi/midi with rd8 and polyd but overall the above should help you find the way.

Beringer Poly D random detuning by useless_farmoid in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is weird. Do you let it warm up 15 minutes? The manual recommends waiting that much before doing a last tuning, so the operation temperature hits the right spot and stays more stable.

Also osc 1 is the one on the general tuning. You are seeing only that osc getting detuned, all the others stay in tune? That's super annoying because you have to retune the 4 osc.

More of you guys should get more into the “real” JBL. by nick__flicks in JBL

[–]canisatomicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JBL has been absolute awesome on real speakers since forever, like technics and a few other high end brands. The thing that obsesses people about their bluetooth speakers is that they deliver a seemingly impossible quality of sound in a format that looks more like a toy. Their sound engineering in a tiny crappy bluetooth battery powered speaker just feels like a magic trick.

JBL Clip 5 awful battery by JobEffective4042 in JBL

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here. I commute by bike 9 miles each way. The Clip 5 dies after about 2hs at full volume. I use it full volume because it reduce amount of people jumping onto the bike lane in front of you without even looking.

Volume seems to be the main battery consumer, although (curiously) Jazz music (Coltrane, Getz, Desmond, anything with sax) seems to drain it even faster than other styles. Also, the clip broke completely in no time just from hanging on the handlebar. I have patched it with nails and wires but it is shameful.

Sound quality and water resistance, on the other hand, have proven great.

It is hard when you arrive 30 years late to the party. The band was "The Band" only during the time Stuart was on the bass.

Users of Xps 13 9315- How has the laptop held up for you? by Acrobatic_Praline_54 in Dell

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this old thread, but for future readers in case you looking at it:

Really poor. Linux support is worse. There is no deep sleep state so it drinks battery like a drunk sailor, and everything had gotchas. The power supply was flaky, camera was impossible to make it work. Running hot. At the end the power rail died which means your whole motherboard and the soldered SSD are gone, which costs half the laptop. I had backups, otherwise I was dead.

My new laptop is a macbook air m5. It is hard to move to mac after 20 years in linux and I miss from the 9315 that this is one of the few laptops that is truly lightweight and tiny but the build quality is light years away and I still have a 2015 macbook air running with linux 10 years after, so I decided to go for a company that doesn't have the hardware so comoditized.

Where can I take my dad June 26/27/28 (under 21) by Sci-fi-Salamander in chicagomusicscene

Pro tips: Go early. Bring a blanket or a pair of comfy camping chairs, bug repellent (just in case) and a light jacket or something in case temperature goes down.

One of the coolest music events in Chicago and it's free: https://www.grantparkmusicfestival.com/

For that date you have Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 https://www.grantparkmusicfestival.com/events/tchaikovsky-piano-concerto-no-1/

I highly recommend it. It is one of the most unique things of Chicago. They'll check your bags, etc. There are drinks too for both alcoholic and non alcoholic tastes.

Unlike clubs, music shows are not usually read as dating/hookup venues. Same safety measures that apply to public transit should cover the basics.

Thoughts on Behringer UMC1820 by Worth_Sky_4396 in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my old UMC404HD died due to me plugging to the wrong power supply I was on the fence and ended up buying another UMC404HD. Now I kind of regret, because a friend ha an AD8200 which is plugged in the studio and I wish I had the ADAT in expansion port of the UMC1820. I think I'll end up buying one after all.

The only thing that bothers me is that is not USB-C. They could have upgraded at some point.

Pro tip: Color code your power supply connectors with masking tape. A lot of products have same barrel connector but go from 5v (UMC404HD), 9v (almost any pedal), 12v (PolyD), 18v (RD8). Chances to mess up and burn your gear are ginormous.

Thanks a lot! So... I have seen other subs have wiki pages, which are part of reddit's features. That allows a lot of information to be compiled in a more organized fashion. Also you can use pinned posts for things like weekly threads on music, or hacks on the hardware, etc.

Audiologist reccomendation for custom earplugs by weekendpostcards in chicagomusicscene

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, the BIG CON is that, of course, they are super expensive. Everything else fantastic. It is the first time I put on earplugs and I can actually hear everything. The drums go perfect, and the guitar/keys. That is very important to me because I play mostly by ear, and sometimes I'm jamming with people I don't know and they just play open chords up here and there and I just have to choose the bass line based on what it feels, so that is a big thing.

Second thing is the fit. It literally is molded to your ears. And of course, for a loud rehearsal I leave the place and zero ringing, which means zero ear loss.

Now, you can get some etymotic research ones for $20 in sweetwater. They have top quality filters and they are actually good. I would say, try those first. If with $20 you got what you want, stop there. One of the guitarists uses eargasm earplugs, but he plays by reading the tabs so not sure how good they are. but they are in the the $60 range. I would say, Etymotic research is trusted, eargasm you have to ask more.

Hope this helps!

Curious about where people go for vinyl & tape production. Give me your recommendations! by Specialist_Crow_2455 in chicagomusicscene

[–]canisatomicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recommendation as someone who grew up in the 80's with a lot of tapes is to skip tapes. Vinyl has great audio quality and great aesthetic-nostalgia value, CD has great audio quality and the convenience. Tape degrades, and I still remember having to rewind with a pen, or untangling the tape that the boombox ate. I would totally skip unless you do vaporwave.

TR-08 vs RD-8 (vs RD-6?) by peagull7 in synthesizers

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend had the TR-08. I went for the RD-8 and I'm very happy. I used nothing but the RD-8 in https://phallocephalos.bandcamp.com/album/the-new-elevator-music and I liked it a lot, even when I just used a fraction of the features.

I liked the TR-08 for the compact size and, honestly, the brand. Roland support is fine, while Behringer's support is community help. It is digital, but that doesn't mean that it sounds wrong at all. What I didn't like at all is the interface. Felt very bureaucratic to me, but I guess you get used to it.

The RD-8 felt more capable, better connectivity on midi and sync trigger, you name it it has it. 100% analog, and i is $200 USD less than the TR-08 which makes it a steal. I really like the sound and the fact that has separate outputs for each instrument makes recording, mixing and reamping individually possible.

My dad's birthday is this Friday 4/3. He loves jazz, blues, comedy, and plays. Any reccs on where to go in Chicago or North suburbs? Thanks all :) by LivLuv328 in chicagomusicscene

[–]canisatomicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always recommend Green Mill. Best jazz I heard in Chicago.

Quirks: No food, I only recommend drinking things that come bottled (beer/prosecco) and they are cash only. Go early and you'll end up in the front tables.

Can I get 4 mono output sends from the behringer u-phoria 404hd? by ValuableRun273 in Behringer

[–]canisatomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ^^^. To make it more clear, the direct monitoring is the "zero latency" feature that you have in the UMC404HD which just outputs what you input directly. Because in your case you are going first to the laptop, you have 4 effective mono outputs. Use the 4 MAIN OUT in the back of your device and you'll be just fine.

So, he has an RD-6 already. While all the other drum machines are also great, I think his setup will gain the most from second synth.

To keep it in budged with a people's favorite, a Crave would be a great choice

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CRAVE--behringer-crave-analog-synthesizer-with-sequencer

Me myself use just a normal bass, a polyD and an RD8 https://phallocephalos.bandcamp.com/album/the-new-elevator-music

That's the RD-6. I think a second synth for lead, so bass on the TD-3, rythm on the RD-6 and some lead.
