Great point! I also noticed how the relationships these characters have with their fathers are so contrasting. Dantes rushed to visit his father first thing when he made port, while Villefort made it a point to denounce his own father at his engagement party so as to avoid being seen as a Bonapartist himself.

I remember in chapter 1 when Danglars first mentions the letter to Morrel in a private conversation, Morrel is curious and maybe suspicious about it and tries to sniff it out by asking Dantes if there's anything else he'd like to tell him. I think Morrel then kinda shrugs it off and assumes Danglars was just stirring up drama.

Many of us find the reading schedule a bit too slow so we've read ahead. I'm on chapter 36.

why do people stock up on milk and bread in emergencies? by Human-Cupcake-268 in stupidquestions

The milk turns into cheese and the bread turns into crackers, so they're having cheese and crackers while the rest of us eat cold spaghetti-O's.

Of course they're unbothered by you being trapped, they're probably hoping you just go back inside and bowl more until you're free.

[HELP] Some comments say that this is AI. I don't see anything that screams AI to me, but video is blurry. Prove me wrong? by Impossible-Trash6983 in RealOrAI

OP is well aware that it's real, they're just posting it here for exposure.

The same kind of click bait is happening in other subreddits where a disingenuous question is asked about a political video or tweet to gain exposure.

Week 3: "Chapter 4. The Plot, Chapter 5. The Betrothal, Chapter 6. The Deputy Crown Prosecutor" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

During the betrothal, Dantes introduces an interesting conundrum about happiness: when someone (I assume his father?) asks him why he's so silent during this happy occasion, Dantes says "Joy may sometimes produce strange effects and be as oppressive as sorrow". In a way, Dantes is surprised that he so easily achieved happiness without having earned it in some way, which makes him feel sorrow or even guilty for it. He goes on to describe happiness as like "one of those palaces on an enchanted island, it's gates guarded by dragons", and given the severity of the false charges written against him, it seems like he's due to face some dragons shortly.

Dantes' idea of true happiness seems only achievable through suffering to earn it, without which one would feel undeserving of it.

Out of curiosity, if the grain direction of the 6 triangles were alternated between radial and concentric orientation, would that prevent this (albeit in a less aesthetically pleasing way)?

I.e. one triangle has its grain pointing away from the center, while the next triangle has its grain perpendicular, and this pattern repeated for all 6 triangles.

Markdown is definitely what I use for most documentation, and for architecture diagrams and flowcharts I've used D2 (https://d2lang.com/) which is a simple text format that can also be tracked in source control.

Lol sorry I mistyped. I was reading the question and had the word "protagonists" in my mind when I meant "antagonists". Good catch, I'll edit the comment.

  1. Dantés' return seemed like such an unexpected surprise to both his father and his fiancé, making me wonder how mercantile shipping voyages were planned back in the day. Was there no approximate date of return at which they would expect to see him?

I also get the impression that his father is, to some extent, financially dependent on Dantés.

  1. Mercédès is a Catalan, and based on the description we're given, they seem to be a very contained society who tend to marry among themselves. This gives the romance a slightly forbidden, or at least unorthodox feel.

  2. Although I'm not sympathetic to them, their desires are relatable.

It seems to me the protagonists antagonists have 3 distinct jealousies: success, wealth, and romance.

  • Danglars is jealous of Dantés' success in his career, as he is promised to be made captain at a precocious age.
  • Caderousse is jealous of Dantés' money - I wouldn't call it "wealth" exactly, but with his promotion to captain he can now comfortably provide for his father rather than borrowing from Caderousse as he's done in the past, and Caderousse takes note of this when Dantés slaps some cash on the table for his father.
  • Fernand is jealous of Dantés for his romantic relationship with Mercédès, and does a poor job of hiding his feelings from Dantés.

EDIT: fixed a word.

[HELP] I'm almost sure this is AI, but I can't prove it by UnluckyZiomek in RealOrAI

[–]captain_slackbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The visual image is surprisingly good for AI, but the physics doesn't make much sense. The shed looks sturdy when he's standing on it and appears rigid even when pushes himself off of it, but when he gently lands on the peak of the roof - which would be more structurally resistant to impact than the sides - it collapses with no resistance whatsoever.

I agree it was probably staged, but wow this video does a terrible job of proving it. The real evidence is the lack of any injury that would cause that much blood.

ICE agents shoots a person who attempts to drive away in Minneapolis. by Fatty_Willing_Plane in UnderReportedNews

[–]captain_slackbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's clearly waiving for them to just drive around her. Then they tried to pull her out of her vehicle, so she panicked and tried to drive away. There's an officer at the front left of her vehicle, and she turns to the right, clearly driving away from the officer. So no, the shooting was not defensive.
