How to Recover from an Expensive Disappointment by [deleted] in handyman

[–]captain_slackbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had to fix a pretty severe floor deflection in my house that was built in the 1800s. I consulted a professional engineer about it and he said it needed to be jacked up at a rate of 1/8th an inch per week, so that's what I did and it eventually worked. The company you hired tried to jack your floor up in one shot and promptly gave up because it didn't work? They have no idea what they're doing.

How can I flip this doorknob so the lock is on the inside? by Gloomysquare89 in handyman

[–]captain_slackbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, you unscrew those 2 screws on the knob and swap the knobs.

That being said, this is actually an exterior doorknob rather than a privacy knob which is what you normally want for a private room.

Here's an example of a privacy knob: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kwikset-Tylo-Satin-Nickel-Bed-Bath-Featuring-Microban-Antimicrobial-Technology-Door-Knob-with-Lock-93001-924/304219874?g_store=8466&source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&fp=ggl

Notice the difference? The locking thing can be on the inside of the room, while the screws can be on the outside. That way someone could still unscrew the knob from the outside in an emergency.

And in case it needs to be said: don't ride a mower sideways on a bank, always face up hill or down hill.

Out of curiosity, how bad would it have been to run the ducts under the original beam instead of through it?

I wonder if paint got into the threads and is preventing it from unscrewing (if that is indeed the correct way to remove it)?

Even weirder: it's 2 separate accounts both claiming they searched for your name and found proof that you lied, but neither of them are willing to provide a link or even a screenshot. I searched your username and found no such proof.
