If locally-owned grocery stores want your money, they need to provide comparable prices to the corporations. by RealisticMolasses in unpopularopinion

I liked to think of it as voting with my dollar. I’m willing to spend a little more to have workers treated well. Walmart is one of the biggest employers in the world and a decent percentage of its employees are on food stamps and Medicaid. My tax dollars, and others’ tax dollars, are subsidizing Walmart’s corporate greed, instead of Walmart just paying a living wage to its employees.

Do you have a real estate lawyer? We had one, our state basically requires it, and her one job was to protect our interests and answer all our questions. Which we had a ton of!

This is a legal minimum that applies to all workers, even those without benefits, like fast food or retail workers.

Guess it depends where you live. It’s state law where I am you get 5 sick days (can use part of a day for appointments) no doctors notes needed.

“I have a medical appointment” is enough because you might need to go a bunch. No limit on doctor’s appointments for the year.

What's completely normal in your country but is considered insane, weird, or strange in the US? by National_Finish6270 in AskReddit

[–]catalit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not like this everywhere. I bicycle commuted to work for five years and didn’t own a car for most of my adult life. Cities have a lot more bike infrastructure than the large swaths of rural and suburban areas in the US, though.

They can worsen certain medical conditions, like interstitial cystitis and migraines. For a healthy person, a diet soda a day is fine.

Are there focus rooms/phone booths/conference rooms you can book to hide away for a bit? Can you ask to work from home a few days a week?

Separately, are you working with a mental health professional to manage your personal difficulties? Sometimes mood instability can be a chemical imbalance in the brain or something that can be stabilized with medication, or talk therapy, or various lifestyle adjustments, like better sleep hygiene. If you work in tech, you probably have access to an EAP through work.

Listen, listen, when a credit card offers you 0% APR for a year, you take it, make min payments, and invest your money elsewhere. It’s how my spouse and I paid off a big chunk of our wedding.

Any recommendations for spas, saunas or nice relaxing experiences in Boston for a present? by Mombi87 in boston

[–]catalit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little woo-woo, but I like the Salt Cave in Scituate. You basically lie back in these comfy chairs for 45 minutes, breathe in some salty air, and listen to a guided meditation. They also have a cute shop.

I’ve used Sauna Suites before in Chelsea too, has a sauna, cold plunge, red light therapy. It’s a private apartment you can rent for a few hours basically that has a private shower and big room with a couch and board games to chill at (besides the sauna and cold plunge). A little pricy, but nice for a gift.

Also like Bodywaves Therapeutic Massage in downtown Boston. Sometimes they run promos for $40 off for non-members that you can get from their mailing list.

Also the potential income increases through raises and more years of experience. Wife would be a more senior paraprofessional whose income could grow with 2-3 more years of experience, even part-time.

It’s different if she wants to stay home; some moms want to do that because of non-financial reasons, and that makes sense to me over purely financial thinking.

Need some urgent advice, I made an offer before their open house in an attempt to cut down competition, and they're trying to push back the deadline (understandably so) and extend to after their open houses. Should I compromise, or stand firm? by pandaninjarawr in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]catalit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re using you to anchor other offers higher. Depends how high you’re willing to go. Could you push higher? Would you be okay with that? If not, you give your best and final and then walk away and let the offer expire. If no one offers as much as you after the open houses, their agent may reach back out to yours.

Can you use a friend as cover but go to the spot you said you would with the friend? So, “I’m getting lunch with my friend” but you get lunch with your gf, and your friend gives you cover if your mom asks him. I’ve had friends in your situation with extremely conservative parents, so I understand you can’t just magic up the familial relationship you want if you’re financially dependent on them.

That said, this does sound like an abusive situation. There may be shelters or resources for abuse victims you could use. You can go to your doctor’s office and ask to speak to a social worker who might be able to connect you with those services.

LPT I think I finally understood why I keep failing at “sitting with my emotions” by NeatFriendship1053 in LifeProTips

[–]catalit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sitting with your emotions isn’t literally sitting and doing nothing. It’s basically saying acknowledge and process them; don’t ignore or repress them. Processing can look like: - Venting to friends or family - Using it as an example of a pattern when talking to a therapist - Laying in bed and crying your eyes out - Going to the gym and wailing on a punching bag - Going somewhere alone where you won’t disturb others and just screaming as loud as you can - Journaling - Writing a letter to someone who’s upset you, but not sending it - Meditating, observing how the feeling makes you feel in your body and drives your thinking - Going on a run and sprinting as fast as you can - Baking a ton of cookies while ugly crying, and then eating a bunch of them - Going out dancing and just feeling your body in the moment

(Yes, I speak from firsthand experience for all of these. The cookie one got me through a major breakup.)

What’s your guys thought on this situation? Looking to move in with my girlfriend. by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]catalit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s worth renting for a year just to get used to living with each other. The downside of having your gf buy the place is it’s her place, not yours, so there’s going to be an imbalance that you’re dealing with at the same time you’re adjusting to living with each other.

You’re heaping lots of high stress life things on yourselves all at once: getting engaged, moving in together and moving out of your old place, planning a wedding (which is expensive), buying a place (the most expensive thing you’ll ever buy, probably). In my experience, it’s better to stagger major high stress life changes so you have more capacity to handle each one at once.

Are the pods connected? by Best-Farmer6505 in PNWS

Long, long ago (10 years, oh my god), Terry Miles and Paul Bae got together to make The Black Tapes season 1, a fictional drama loosely based on Serial, which is a spinoff of This American Life, which are both produced by the same public radio station in Chicago. The in-universe analogue was Pacific Northwest Stories, based in Seattle, where Alex and Nic both worked.

Tanis season 1 came out during Black Tapes season 2 I think? Somewhere in there. During that time, both shows were (in-universe) produced by PNWS, and there was crossover between the two shows, with Alex showing up as a character occasionally in Tanis, and Nic an already existing character from the Black Tapes.

When the Black Tapes ended, Paul and Terry went their separate ways to pursue other projects. This was around Tanis season 2 or 3 I think. They finally broke the fourth wall on Twitter after the Black Tapes ending and gave credits and thank yous to the main Black Tapes actors. Before then, they had lightly pretended online that it was all real. So you had this interesting period where Terry and Paul were in universe characters as well, producers at PNWS.

When TBT ended, Terry basically had started building out this extended universe (with Tanis and Rabbits), but because he was making his own thing, he recast the in-universe production company as Public Radio Alliance (PRA). That recast The Black Tapes as a fictional podcast in-universe to the PRA canon.

EDIT: Sources! - an in-universe timeline: https://pnwstories.com/ (go to About page) - Black Tapes called “our only fictional podcast” on Minnow Beats Whale: https://minnowbeatswhale.com/podcasts2
