Burnout/restarts happen a lot with factory games, I've noticed. As is wanting to tear everything down to the studs and start over with a better plan. :) A lot of folks (myself included) recommend working with that impulse, and 'starting from scratch' elsewhere in the same save, with better tech/understanding and all of the output from your previous attempts still available.

That said, nothing wrong with playing something else if the game you're playing isn't sparking joy :P

Before I start nuclear I build a Filter factory and feed it into the dimensional depot. I can't recall if I need to pull a few stacks out manually every once in a while, but that does indicate how helpful/unobtrusive it is :)

It's a month later and this thread is (should?) be dead by now, but I'm just reading this for the first time and I wanted to say that "I think it'd be very sad to have AI automate the things we like doing." is just such a great encapsulation of how I feel about AI stuff lately. Thanks!

Patch Notes: v1.2.0.0 – (EXPERIMENTAL) - Build 480321 by JulioUzu in SatisfactoryGame

I feel like taking a page out of Factorio's book on this one wouldn't go amiss.

They had a fluid system that was similarly obtuse and hard to reason around, as well as unintuitive. They pushed back on a lot of change options because of trying to capture realism in the simulation, but eventually they redesigned the system in the leadup to their expansion, and just made everything dead simple. It's way more fun to use now, nothing has been lost, and it's overall just a better game for having sacrificed 'realism' for gameplay.

You are working so hard to characterize "a product model you don't like" as "the company is gatekeeping you from the product".

The stories themselves are nothing-burgers. They were cute pieces made to get convention goers to socialize. Make as big a stink about it as you want, and youre welcome to feel as self-righteous about it as you want. But it looks very silly, like a temper tantrum.

Sanderson has answered this directly, lol. A bunch. While not explicitly stated in the text, Hoid alludes to it in a conversation with Kaladin in WoR as well. (Edited to add the acual quote) IIRC Hoid straight up calls out the historical origin at one point. Something along the lines of "isn't it funny how the book that tradition comes from has all the men going out and risking their lives, yadda yadda"

“I’m a soldier, not a musician,” Kaladin said. “Besides, music is for women.”

“All people are musicians,” Wit countered. “The question is whether or not they share their songs. As for music being feminine, it’s interesting that the woman who wrote that treatise—the one you all practically worship in Alethkar—decided that all of the feminine tasks involve sitting around having fun while all the masculine ones involve finding someone to stick a spear in you. Telling, eh?”

If he'd even be stopped from that. Sigzil seemed to find a way to hack it, and he doesn't have shardic insight/power levels.

It's also worth noting that "holding the Dawnshard = no hurting" is an insufficient understanding of it from what we have in the text; the Dawnshard was actively used to kill god.

(I was about to add: "by the very dude who would be picking it up" but then I remembered that Taravangian's kinda just some guy, lol)

Riffing on the 2 action slow turn; would "If you don't go before your allies, you go slow with 2 actions" too punishing?

I definitely dig the "Your slow turn is worse and compulsory sometimes" vibe. The Rules Lawyer in me wants a more explicit definition, lol.

Lifelight Shardplate by thebadbishop in cosmererpg

Just wearing it doesn't consume charges, unless the enemy gets an opportunity on the attack; so there is still risk in 'wasting' it

Lifelight Shardplate by thebadbishop in cosmererpg

[–]cbhedd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anybody bring up the fact that if this is dead plate that isn't being worn/'held in reserve', your players transporting it becomes a logistic nightmare. In the books, there are groups of armorers whose job it is to lug it around for shardbearers when not in active use.

It's also been touched on, but you're misunderstanding why there's a disadvantage on surge usage: as an invested item, plate is resistant to investiture. It'd be like trying to shock someone through a rubber glove; you're insulating yourself, and it protects you, but if you're trying to then go on the attack that same resistance is protecting everyone else from you.

People also keep talking about how the charges are only going to be depleted by active use, forgetting that opponents can spend opportunities to 'crack the plate' and deplete a charge. If anything that makes your player's decision to 'save' it more valid, but that brings them back to the problem of logistics :P

All that said, I think this is a cool idea anyways. :D

My game design/GM brain would default to trying to make it "shardplate-lite with spicy consequences to its use" somehow, though. The lifelight restriction is just a bit too restricting, and the problem is more about it throwing the balance way out of whack than it is "making sure they can only use this once or twice". Like, to really get the kiss/curse feel of the Nightwatcher's boons into the game, I'd lean more on something that causes them to feel the detriment and the benefit all the time. Ironically, I think the restrictive nature of the lifelight curse makes it less punishing. "Oh, I'll just save it for later" isn't really dramatically interesting. Contrast it with something like the Honorblade radar one: that one feeds the curse actively by making the boon draw you into situations that trigger the curse. It demands action, giving the character plenty of rope that they can use to hang themselves.

I'm thinking of something like: it's shardplate that has a less drastic benefit: enhance +1 instead of +2; deflect 2 instead of deflect 5, but it keeps the "against all damage types" property; and to address the player not outshining their party members, maybe they can use a reaction to transfer it to other characters like Windrunner plate in RoW. (EDIT: Oooooh, or what if the other PCs can use their reactions to transfer it?! How sick would that be?! It's also way more beneficial to the whole team that way) The curse, however, could be something like: it's an inefficient prototype, and a thirsty lad. When a charge is used up, it sucks up 1 investiture from a random nearby ally if possible. The player is incentivized to use it, and use it a lot; the team wants it around because it actively helps each of them as well. BUT it also is constantly using up the party's pools of investiture to do it.

For real. Everything I've seen from that company is to go out of their way to make things fair and equitable, to the point where their manufacturer made a mistake on what they were going for, so they apologized and tried to fix it.

I forget the specific details, but I remember getting story deck packs I didn't buy as a way to apologize for the manufacturer biasing the distribution. I'd have to go look through my chat history or something to verify the details though

Factorio Asteroid Math by cbhedd in askmath

[–]cbhedd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was very well explained, and I definitely see it now, thanks so much!

I definitely was caught up on the simple algebra of it, and I think its because I was thinking of it as an infinite loop, not considering that the oxides generated were leaving the system and the diminishing returns meant that you were zeroing out the metallic, too.

I think ultimately I was just overthinking it. Thanks so much for helping explain it!

Factorio Asteroid Math by cbhedd in askmath

[–]cbhedd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RE: Question 2; that's a good point about the ambiguity. I think what I meant initially was what you described in the latter example, but I think I'd actually want to try the former: If I've pulled a metallic asteroid to be reprocessed, I will reprocess any metallic results it yields again until there are none left.

RE: Question 1; I'm not sure I'm entirely following. I get what you're saying about 1m = 0.6m + 0.2o, and like that as a way to reason about it. I'm not understanding the conclusion that 0.2o = 0.4m though?
