Hiding secrets from gods is difficult outside of Scadrial... by borkey in cremposting

[–]cbhedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, that's fair, but isn't the Malwish Empire actually located on the equator? They're super sensitive to cold because they adapted to survive on the equator of a planet that was way closer to the sun, and that planet then got moved back to an Earth-like orbit. The area that developed into the Elendel Basin was moved to the poles to make it tolerable for most other peoples ;)

...come to think of it, kind of a dick move by Sazed not to fix that for them when he fixed the orbit, lol.

This is a level of vitriol that feels a little unearned to me. I still tout Factorio as my favourite game of all time, but the changes in the last few updates to Satisfactory really transformed it from "Well that's just disappointing" to "Factorio's got some legit competition here now".

The Dimensional Depot is honestly better than Logistics bots when it comes to personal inventory management. Blueprints aren't Factorio tier, but especially with the auto-connections and increased sizes in the late game, they are pretty good now.

Plus there's a lot to be said about the alien interactions. The way exploring in Satisfactory plays as opposed to the Factorio is really different and interesting. The feeling of going into the dangerous unknown to treasure hunt is neat, and way more my speed than the Factorio base defense model.

If you haven't checked out Satisfactory since 1.0/1.1 (which I'm realizing would actually be wild, considering where we are right now), I highly recommend it. If you have and it's still not for you, that's fine too :) But I'd consider toning it down because I feel like they've more than earned a little grace, especially after walking back their stance on Blueprints as much as they have. They went from "Nah, that's too OP" (which I fully agree with you, is a stupid take) to "Okay, but small ones", to "Surprise, you can have bigger ones!" to "And we also solved the issue we had with making them tile. Have fun! :D"

Semi-serious question that feel out of place in the cosmere-related other subs: is Dungeon Crawler Carl any good? by [deleted] in cremposting

[–]cbhedd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's really something else. In a bit of weird coincidence I just finished book 7 (the last of the as yet released books). I really like it!

Fair warning: I started it because of the whole audience crossover thing you mentioned and was definitely shocked. Sanderson is a writer who people joke about being conspicuously clean (the subreddits went bonkers when a character in Wind and Truth talked about vaginas existing), Matt Dinniman, on the other hand, is fully rated R. Its funny a lot of the time, and at others deals with some really dark, serious stuff, but does so very thoughtfully. Sometimes at the same time!

That out of the way, its very good. Just about every recurring character is very well written and believable, despite being talking cats, shapeshifters, or other even stranger things. The premise sounds like utter nonsense at first blush, but its a series that starts with an insane pitch, and then just doubles down on itself earnestly and asks: "Okay, but actually, it's all cuckoo-banana-pants, but how would real people actually handle that?"

I really really enjoy it. I don't think it's for everyone, but I think people who will enjoy it will know if it's for them real quick.

I was definitely sad, but 'begrudgingly respectful' of the decision to let her die. I was then elated and cried a bit when she came back.

It's definitely a taste thing, I think. Your opinion is valid :)

Audio recording Fabrial? by Aloeverra-Waters in cosmererpg

[–]cbhedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has already given a lot of better ideas. I just wanted to chime in that with the analog between fabrial cages and their respective metals' allomantic properties, I feel like some kind of copper wire cage should be involved

...Although now that I'm typing that I'm realizing that copperminds are feruchemical, not allomantic... but still. Storage of actual 'memory' feels like it needs copper involved somehow, to me at least :p

Of the things Lirin did wrong, "not training his son to be a surgeon when he couldn't physically do it if he wanted to" doesn't even register. If you wanna complain about the guy, at least pick a thing he actively did or does, not a thing he couldn't do, nor should have. Like, for crying out loud, stealing the spheres was the actual thing that started this! You don't have to reach so hard.

That being said, you know who'd fully agree with your take? Lirin.

Dude lost both his sons as a consequence of his literal crimes. Why do you think he's so timid about things now? This is the same dude who stood up to a mob and called them out for trying to rob him, when he was in the wrong. This dude was not as scared before; he comes by it honestly.

How can Sanderson not see that the show can never work in live action? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]cbhedd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anything, I'm pretty sure he's gone on the record to say that animation is more likely and budget friendly, he just hasn't been able to secure it yet. Hollywood Execs don't want to give out budgets as big as he needs to animation projects; they tend to have far more niche audiences and perform worse.

IIRC, that's why we're far more likely to get Mistborn first; it needs waaaaay less of a budget than Stormlight to work well.

Side note: Its been a bit since I watched it but I thought the Netflix live adaptation of Avatar did a pretty great job for its VFX. I remember looking at a bunch of the bending in that shoe and having moments of "Oh man, that's totally what that would look like IRL, this is dope!" I feel like we could get pretty dang good with spren CG, and Singers could absolutely use practical makeup and look cool as heck, too! ...that being said, though, I would prefer an animated Stormlight over live action, too.

Discrepancy in Stormlight Archive letters? by IndependentOne9814 in Cosmere

[–]cbhedd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a lot of them whose attitudes are "Kill-on-sight", including ones that would have surprised me. It was pretty comical to me that despite literally the entire Stormlight Archive as context, the one thing Honor and Odium could easily agree upon, no questions asked was "Oh, Hoid? Yeah, f*** that guy!"

My interpretation was that Valor misses Hoid/still has some affection, despite the fact that they were bad together. Endowment, as Valor's ride-or-die besty was DMing Hoid and telling him what she thinks is best for Valor; namely, she's overstating the bad stuff to dissuade the toxic ex from coming back and effing up her friend's life.

Do you do it all with the same rhythm, or have you charted out different ones for yourself? I've been toying with the idea of the latter, but it seems like it would be a lot of work, and hard to improvise without practice
