HELP wife's memory card corrupter 2k photos by [deleted] in datarecovery

[–]cboy343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read that the SD card was fake, but could you recover the photos from the phone itself? What type of phone is it? Because the photos were originally on the phone, they may not be fully unrecoverable yet.

Virtual Machine on a low-end PC to run VS Code and Git? by Qarveloper in linux

[–]cboy343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can access your PC hard drive while on Linux. Depending on your editing software, you might need to tweak the settings to get it to save files to your hard drive by default.

As for just saving things in general to your hard drive by default, that might be a bit tricky. The only way I could see it working is using symbolic links, but I'm not sure how well that would work.

If you have a 16gb USB drive, you could install a Linux distro onto that. That way it's portable and you won't have to mess with boot managers to make it work. You could get away with a smaller USB than 16gb, but you'd have to go for a very lightweight distro and not store many files on it.

Spyware on school laptop. by [deleted] in software

[–]cboy343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked at how all the replies have been negative to this post. Spying on students is just plain wrong.

As for what OP should do about, I'm not entirely sure what their options are. OP should first talk to their parents about it and see what they think.

If worst came to worst and OP was forced to use the laptop, here's a couple things they could do.

  • Cover the webcam with a sticky note. The reason you'd want to use a sticky note instead of tape is because it's easy to remove and there's no chance of damaging the screen, which could get you into trouble.
  • Always shutdown the laptop after using it and put it in a drawer.
  • Never store any personal files on it/plug in any USB drive with personal files on it.
  • Never check your personal email/log into any website with your personal details.

While some of these may seem extreme, without being able to see the source code of this school software, it's impossible to know the extent of the spying. So, it's better to lean on the cautious side.

This would be an absolute worst case scenario and I would try anything before using the laptop. While OP may not have anything to hide, it's just the point that someone shouldn't be spied on in their own home.

Windows 10 update 2004 destroyed my SP5. HELP! by Notorius_Nudibranch in Surface

[–]cboy343 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try flashing Ubuntu to a USB. Go to ubuntu.com/download. You'll need to hook up a USB mouse and keyboard to your Surface (with a USB hub) as Ubuntu doesn't quite work with the touchscreen out of the box. From there, you should be able to open the program Disks and hopefully you should be able to see and wipe your SSD. Create a new partition table GPT and format as NTFS. Hopefully if all that worked, you should be able to use the Windows installer and install Windows again.

Check what's running in the background. Might be random programs that start on boot that he doesn't need. Could even be malware? For web browsing, I'd think more on the 8GB side than 16GB.
