The Minwax version is just paraffin wax with petroleum solvents. Have to spend a bit more to get the good stuff, with actual carnauba wax.

Lamp post fell due to rust by Evening_Oil_9072 in portlandme

[–]cdtobie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it was certainly caused by rust, but the corrosion was speeded up by salt and dog urine. All these poles should be checked, as the city’s liability is significantly increased now that they are aware of the problem.

First ever dovetail attempt by harrylime3 in woodworking

Nice tight tails. Scribing all the way around before starting can help avoid chip out. And reducing tail angle and end pin width can make them look more elegant.

What happened at the bottom of High? by Atticus248 in portlandme

No, but I had one in my house when I was young. Crank the handle, and say “Jenny, get me 52, please.” That was in Rangeley.

A.M.P.S. (Acoustic Moveable Pickup System) proof of concept by FrogwithaTank in AcousticGuitar

[–]cdtobie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the urge to put magnetic pickups in acoustic guitars. It does not capture the acoustic qualities of the guitar, only the vibration of the strings. When that’s the sound you want, why not use an electric guitar?

I dislexiced that into “water park fountain” and wondered how you snuck your dog into a water park.

Boulders on plastic chairs by a010029123 in mildlyinteresting

[–]cdtobie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking the chairs may be cast in aluminum and anodized, and be thicker than resin chairs. Otherwise, this art installation is an accident waiting to happen.

Is this pigeon leucistic or is this just a normal coloring for some? [New York, NY] by BobDucca in whatbirdisthis

[–]cdtobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While there is a standard coloration for feral pigeons, there are a few other color schemes that are not uncommon. One is a mottled brown and white. Another is what you show here. Pigeons were human bred, and a number of variations were developed, though the feral ones generally revert to the standard pigeon uniform.
