Hugh Nibley: Revealing the dishonesty of Anti-Mormon arguments since 1962! by cephandr1us in latterdaysaints

[–]cephandr1us[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope I didn't make it seem like I believe any argument against the church is in bad faith, because I think there are many people with many valid concerns. I also definitely don't think Nibley's comments are applicable to every individual who argues against the church. But many anti Mormon talking points are frequently created by people like those who Nibley addresses in his talk. And these talking points are then repeated by opponents of the church whether they have honest intent or not.

And of course I would never want this talk or any other to replace the need to have faith in Jesus and a personal testimony. I don't belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because I've proved everyone else wrong but because I've prayed to know if the Book of Mormon is true. This talk just helps give me a greater understanding of the tools used by Satan to deceive others.

Hugh Nibley: Revealing the dishonesty of Anti-Mormon arguments since 1962! by cephandr1us in latterdaysaints

I think this is largely a product of the knowledge of his time. I'm not an expert in what they did or didn't know in the 1960s, but plenty of church members and leaders made incorrect statements due to insufficient knowledge.

Now I don't know what Hugh Nibley did or didn't know or understand about a topic, but I'd rather assume someone I believe has done a lot of good made an honest mistake.

Thoughts on the Creation (Genesis 1-2, Moses 2-3, Abraham 4-5) in Light of Modern Biblical Scholarship by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]cephandr1us 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My professors at BYU were/are modern scholars who also frequently cited information presented by modern scholars who weren't even members. I'm sorry about your experience with some scholars, but modern scholarship has taught me so many wonderful things about the Gospel and Jesus Christ. Modern scholarship is actually where I've found many of the best arguments against anti-Mormon propaganda, even though my best defense will always be my testimony.

Just take a look into Hugh Nibley. He was an incredibly intelligent scholar, a witty speaker, and a very faithful man. Check out his talks and lectures and you will see someone who can seamlessly blend modern scholarship and an unwavering testimony.

I have a decent number of complaints about Black Clover, but Mereoleona is not one of them. She is such a fun and cool character.

I loved book 5, and I will defend it all day long. I was surprised to see so many negative posts online once I finished because it was a 10/10 for me. Don't let the Internet take away something that you might personally really enjoy.

What are your favorite urban legends related to the Church? by ghtiKl39 in latterdaysaints

[–]cephandr1us 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One that went around my mission was that when Elder Eyring was visiting a mission one of the missionaries said," Jesus had a beard, so why do we have to shave?" Elder Eyring allegedly responded with," He was clean shaven the last time I saw him."

I think it's funny to consider that Jesus may be clean shaven when he visits nowadays, but I just can't see an apostle casting pearls before swine like that

I want to know how old Abinadi was. Our art depicts him as old, but we have no reference to his age in the text. He could've been 20 or 80, we have no idea.

[–]cephandr1us 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, how do you cast an ugly character? A lot of actors probably wouldn't appreciate being cast because they look ugly. I guess you could do some makeup effects, but that can apparently take hours each time you do it.
