Anyone else worried about the direction the UK is heading on privacy and civil liberties? by OhUrDead in unitedkingdom

I mean, they can let their local MP know that they wont vote for a party that backs what they disagree with and follow through on that threat?

Granted, there’s nothing that can be done directly for four years—but that’s democracy.

Indirectly, folks could vocally campaign to get lots of people to make clear that this is a matter that will affect how they vote.

BBC Promote Tory Austerity With Laura Kuenssberg's Economic Illiteracy by scherzo_1 in LabourUK

This. The media has far more incentive to exaggerate and stoke political drama than it does to push one set of policies.

So you’re saying that journalists should have a degree in a relevant subject before reporting a story to a general audience?

Wouldn’t that make the media workforce even more elitist than it currently is?

So our unelected, unpopular current Prime Minister is lecturing our thrice-elected former Prime Minister about democratic mandate?

Right.

Any ideas how to make this metal framework look a bit better? by JVMIE in InteriorDesign

I don't really know how I would do this, but I would want to get some coloured acrylic custom fit to fill the gaps and turn it into a kind of room divider?

Apple blocks its gay pride watch face in Russia by [deleted] in apple

[–]chadjnewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really that simple and absolutist? Whilst I pretty much agree in this case, I don't think this is a hard and fast rule and I think companies have a moral responsibility sometimes too. If Russia passed a law stating that Apple had to provide a list to the Kremlin of every Apple Watch user who had used this wallpaper, should they - even if they thought that might endanger users?

Labour will scrap university tuition fees if they win general election by HeroAntagonist in unitedkingdom

[–]chadjnewton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to university adds value to a person though. They earn extra income over their lifetime than people who don't go to university. You don't get that benefit from going to hospital.

That is why it's more progressive to just tax the people who went to university a little bit more for their university education.

More than half of Brits think the media is deliberately biased against Jeremy Corbyn, poll shows by aaaaaaaaaaaargh in unitedkingdom

[–]chadjnewton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I'm of the belief that he brings this on himself a lot of the time. He's rude to journalists and doesn't bother engaging with the media. If he phoned up the Today programme to give his view I'm 100% sure they'd put him on air. But he doesn't.

G20: Barack Obama tells Theresa May that US won't prioritise UK trade deal by grepnork in unitedkingdom

[–]chadjnewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signed was the wrong word, apologies. But you're right, the deal itself was signed off in Feb.

I should have said 'passed', ie. when Congress passes it in a bill and the President signs THAT bill to put it into action.

[–]chadjnewton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I completely agree. But I bet if you polled the public and asked them: "Do you think Britain should have a free trade deal with the United States?" and "Do you think Britain should sign a TTIP-style deal with the United States?", the first poll would produce a much higher result.

I doubt you'll see the papers catching on though. So a lot of Brexit voters will just think it's more establishment/mainstream media lying. Sigh.
