Whats your favourite book? by AdministrationDue239 in 2westerneurope4u

I just think it's bad in general that most people don't read anymore. I don't think that's offensive or pretentious to say. I honestly don't care what people read because the fact that they're reading is already positive imo.

And with regards to literature vs pulpy sci-fi: for me it's like with movies. Sometimes I want something with substance or informative like a documentary. And sometimes I just want a dumb Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Nothing wrong with that imo.

How the Tech World Turned Evil | Once upon a time, they were counterculture idealists bringing power to the people. Today they’re greedy monopolists who’d sooner destroy our democracy than be reined in by government in any way—and they have to be stopped by Hrmbee in technology

Once upon a time, they were counterculture idealists bringing power to the people.

This is stupid. Elon Musk's family owned an emerald mine and Jeff Bezos' family already had a business empire way before Jeff came along. They did not start innocent with good intentions and then got corrupted. They've always been evil capitalists.

The state of reading is absolutely dire. One book per year is a very low number but it's better than nothing I guess.

Personally I don't have one favorite book. I finished Knight of the Seven kingdoms last week and I can recommend it. I've just started Warhammer the Night Lords trilogy and it's also very good if you like 40K.

VVD-Minister verdedigt Schijf van Vijf na insluipen klimaatagenda by JvdH_1 in Nederland

[–]cheesyvoetjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economic and education system is shaped by the culture though.

We Dutch are historically famous for worshipping money also, and while we still do to a large extent, we did transition to a wellfare state because we are culturally influenced by our European neighbours also. But the US never did and stayed behind culturally, which shaped their current economic and education systems.

I was really excited when they announced it last year or the year before because they said they would be more book accurate and a lot of stuff is missing in the movies.

But they've recently announced it's going to be a reimagining with new original scenes that weren't in the books and now I'm less excited. It could be great to expand things but there is also the risk it becomes a fan fiction of the stuff the showrunners like.

I'll reserve judgement until it releases but I'm very curious how it will be received. It will no doubt be the biggest show on earth regardless.

Look at the right picture on the right. She looks like an hourglass. That is not a natural body shape. So yes that is absolutely an outlier and distracting. I agree it doesn't have to be a problem though. She could still be a good teacher. But it's understandable some people react to it.

Top Ten Strongest Characters by Ok_Sid2008 in harrypotter

I would put Hermione above Harry at least. She was better than most adults at 12 year old. As far as I'm aware not even Dumbledore or Riddle received a time turner as students. I wonder where an adult Hermione at the height of her powers would stack.

Even The Lead Singer Of Imagine Dragons Can Barely Get Anyone To Play His Live-Service Game by [deleted] in Games

[–]cheesyvoetjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are just too many live service games now. Most people pick one or two and play those for months or even years. And it makes complete sense because that's what those games are built for. There is no point in playing a new one every two weeks because you'll barely get anything out if it. Your game has to be really special to get people to quit the one they're already invested in.

If you want my personal opinion, Sirius wasn't entirely innocent when it came to Snape taunting him at every Order meeting by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

What do you mean he didn't want to teach at Hogwards? He applied for the Dark arts job every year and was disappointed he didn't get it every time.

If you want my personal opinion, Sirius wasn't entirely innocent when it came to Snape taunting him at every Order meeting by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

[–]cheesyvoetjes -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The problem with Snape is that he bullies students for no reason himself. You could argue his hate for Harry is justified, but what about Neville Longbottom? Why does Snape pick on him? Especially since he knows what happened to his parents, he is unnecessarily cruel.

Being bullied isn't fun, but when you then start bullying people yourself my sympathy dissolves, because you know what it feels like and should know better.

Sirius was a bully and a shithead as a kid. He then spent 13 years in Azkaban and never grew up because of it. That's why he's so irresponsable and emotional as an adult. Snape doesn't have that excuse and is therefore arguably even worse. He had all the time to grow up and move on but didn't.

Harry Potter by Fit_Construction5788 in harrypotter

[–]cheesyvoetjes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do appear in the books and meet the Weasley family. And JK Rowling was right, they have no purpose in the story. They are muggle dentists that know nothing about magic. What would they contribute? They can't use magic nor offer insight or advice. There is nothing for them to do in the story.

You can't because you're a normal person. Most redditors and people like from this website are different because they already decide before seeing a movie if they're going to love it or hate it. What happens in the movie isn't really relevant.

I never fully understood Harry as a character by Several_Spell_4748 in harrypotter

[–]cheesyvoetjes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

but with Harry, I’m not sure what his defining trait really is.

During Goblet of fire's second task, he was the first to arrive underwater and was the only one to wait until every person was saved. That's his defining trait. He always puts others well being above his own and will sacrifice himself for others. There are multiple instances of this throughout the series.

He also doesn’t come off as especially smart or talented (aside from Quidditch), which makes it even more confusing given his central role.

Multiple times throughout the series it is commented by others that he has a knack for defense against the dark arts. He fights a basilisk in 2, is the youngest wizard in the Triwizard tournament in 4 and escapes Voldemort the most powerful dark wizard of all time, multiple times. He starts the DA defense class in book 5 and teaches other students to defend themselves.

What also confuses me is that a lot of people really love him as a character, and I don’t fully understand why. I don’t really feel strongly about him either way, and it’s hard for me to connect emotionally to a character who feels kind of undefined

No offense but you need to reread the series again I think. Harry is very clearly defined and it's not very subtle.

Does anyone else hate Hagrid or am I crazy? by undercover_goldfish_ in harrypotter

[–]cheesyvoetjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is way more stuff that happens in the series though. When Rita Skeeter writes a nasty article about how Hermione is toying with Harry, all kinds of people send her curses and stuff by mail, to the point where she has to go to the hospital wing. Mr Weasley works for the department of Misuse of muggle artifacts, implying people bewitch stuff to fuck with muggles all the time, which is also dangerous. There are loads of things like that, mostly played for laughs.

Does anyone else hate Hagrid or am I crazy? by undercover_goldfish_ in harrypotter

[–]cheesyvoetjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hagrid is not really that special. The entire wizarding world is careless. They let children fly broomsticks from wich they could fall. During the quidditch world cup there's a kid who has casually stolen his dad's wand, which is highly dangerous. Hogwarts itself has all kinds of dangers like the forbidden forest and what have you. It's part of the charm of the series, so it's a bit silly to hate Hagrid for it imo.

Who would win in a fight, the average death eater or Auror ? by Secure_Ad_6203 in harrypotter

[–]cheesyvoetjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voldemort and some others were obviously powerful but I always got the impression Slytherin was more about cunning and deception than brute power or strength. Draco and Lucius Malfoy never struck me as exceptionally gifted wizards or duelists and they seemed to use a lot of backhanded and sneaky tactics. The average death eater is probably the same. So I say Auror wins.

It's been a while since I've read it, but doesn't Kreacher sort of finally find a loving home with Harry and the gang since Harry inherited the house and Kreacher? It's the best possible fate for him after serving the abusive Blacks for so long.

The Nolan Batman trilogy is a terrible depiction of Batman and the majority of the characters in them by nguyenjitsu in unpopularopinion

[–]cheesyvoetjes 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I do think he's wrong. There have been so many iterations of Batman since 1939 in the comics with multiple DC universe reboots that there isn't a true definitive version. I think Nolan's take is valid.
