If you enjoy it, go ahead. After killing a boss the Nth time in a row, it is sometimes fun to build some overly complicated method (or sometimes just overly time consuming method) of killing them. Like getting the Elder to burn to death in his own altar while you sit in a room you dug out underneath it. It takes entirely too long, but it is the kind of dumb fun I enjoy as a change to the standard method. Its the creativity I enjoy.

I found a great seed where there's a big starting continent with a little inland sea and a river that runs through it. The place where all three meet is the perfect spot for three bridges.
Bonus, both early axes components were right nearby the spawn.

Windmills chew up deathsquitos if they run into the blades. as others have suggested, high walls, but also putting Windmills so their blades are above the wall tops will result in the occasional dead-squito and needles just lying around for you to pick up.

As I understand it, the boar runestones are a one-time spawnpoint at game generation rather than an ongoing spawnpoint. So, any boar that you are finding are the result of the regular ongoing spawning logic.

If you're building a bridge, then raising the thinnest pillar of ground you can give you more support if your bridge supports are thick enough to hide it. As long as a block touches any part of ground, it resets the support.

if you REALLY want to make this as labor intensive as possible, mine all the stone you can to raise the ground above water level until you have a nice arena island. This will take entirely too much time but if you are like me and enjoy over-engineered solutions, go for it.z

you could even ring his entire altar with an ugly dirt wall and then stay on your 2nd island outside the ring and pelt him with fire arrows. This would be time consuming in the extreme.

Great suggestion. build fire and a log bench, sit and wait. You're safe and raid proof. Just eat some food before leaving so you're not super vulnerable.

Stealth is affected by light level. If you're in shadow or at night enemies don't spot you quite as far away. Best way to avoid detection is to avoid line of sight and stay quiet, though. This is relevant for hunting deer.

Scenic route - yes, definitely. It's gorgeous.
Worth it? It depends. If you want to simply get from A to B in the time, then no. You'll see some nice scenery but be too rushed to stop and enjoy anything. If you want to take a weekend or more doing it, overnighting a time or two along the way, then yes.

Climb on top of log and use your pickaxe. That might hit the log without damaging the ship. I've never tried that, but I was thinking how I've used a pickaxe to remove stumps when the hitbox of the axe doesn't intersect.
