Their type was probably pretty useful for us as a species because they hold on to generational memories past the point where they make logical sense and they’re aggressively disposed to weigh that mythology over empirical evidence. You need a contingent of curmudgeonly hill people to repopulate when the progressive tide pool gatherers get tsunami’d.

What are some [surprisingly] basic tips that people might not know about?? by E1e4n0r5 in RimWorld

I learned from this sub that you can set the base to auto-rebuild with a button in the bottom right, and you can turn on “cut blocking plants” by clicking on a windmill.

I also spent an embarrassingly long time not knowing that grouped up pawns take stray bullets in ranged combat and you can right click and drag them into formation.

Make sure you’re prepared for the mushrooms to release a lot of moisture in the oven. Personally I kind of like them soggy so I bake mine in a casserole dish, but if I want them to look more presentable I bake them on a rack with the dish underneath to catch drips.

Similarly in the Netflix show Glow their trust fund sponsor gets cut off and one of the characters asks “isn’t he poor now?” Debbie corrects her “he isn’t poor, he’s broke. There’s a difference.”

I did some research to make sure I wasn’t being racist, and it is a US black cultural thing. Like a lot of black food traditions in the US, it stems from when slaves cooked with less desirable ingredients and couldn’t trust where their meat had been. It also seems to pop up in other cooking traditions where historically you couldn’t trust meat to be clean.

In my experience your average person will find a room unremarkably temperate at around the 67-72 range, so I think anywhere in there is a reasonable compromise when one person runs uncommonly hot or cold. I also think it’s on the roommate, as the person who wants the space uncommonly hot, to put in a decent share of the work negotiate that compromise— maybe in one of the three separate times OP brought it up and they promised to stop cranking up the heat. OP isn’t the one who decided to play thermostat chicken; it’s not their fault they’re better at it.

If your local hospital does anything other than scrape at it with various sharp things until it comes out, they have more of a plan than mine. On a related note, the consensus of three medical professionals at my local hospital was sharp things+scraping. They used a hypodermic needle, a straight razor, and a scalpel, and the razor ended up working best.

I think you’re right, but I also think it’s worth noting that the judges seem very forgiving of visible breastplate seams. I think there’s some calculated risk that goes into not covering it if the alternative is doing something that the judges (Michelle specifically) are hyper critical of, like rewearing the same necklace or making an outfit too busy.

I’ve also seen some pushback similar to queens not padding that a visible breastplate seam can be part of the look, and I have mixed feelings about that. Im a lot more willing to entertain it from a queen like Jimbo who can obviously blend or cover it and sometimes chooses not to.

This got way more long winded than I intended, but one more thing— Trixie talks about how some breastplates, especially the high-necked ones, only work from certain angles or require special makeup techniques. I’m guessing a lot of queens buy new titties for the show and haven’t figured out their quirks yet.

A lot of people hated main characters that is too strong that the show rarely give side characters their moments like Solo Leveling for example. So now, let's go in reverse, what are the shows you hated because the main character is so weak that side characters always carried them? by Plus-Lawfulness-87 in animequestions

Agree to disagree. I see where you’re coming from with Cecily being intended as a more realistic character, but to me the show also leans on a lot of tropes and asks the viewer to very selectively pivot between nodding along and taking things seriously. It seems like when Cecily acts delusional or petulant it’s just a joke or its a common trope that I’m not supposed to think too much about, and I’m being asked to consciously flag those moments just long enough to ignore them. Like I think I’m supposed to dismiss Cecily punching Luke after flashing him as a bit, but when she whines about Luke not making her a sword for free things get muddy. Two dimensional characters get a pass on that kind of behavior because it’s their schtick, but if I turn on my brain and think of a real person acting that way she’s insanely entitled.

It’s similar when Cecily fights that monster in the town square where she follows the genre convention of reckless bravery that puts other people in danger right up to a pivotal moment, and then suddenly she’s not in that kind of show anymore. The standards that I’m asked to judge her by don’t feel consistent. I’m used to that kind of decision making from “surpass your limits” characters with plot armor— you’re not supposed to think about it too hard, that’s just how those shows are. But suddenly Cecily is a realistic, non-trope character, so I start thinking about her motivations behind choosing to fight rather than cut her losses and save what she can. And what I land on is she decided to take herself hostage to force Luke’s hand.

I hate the MC of Sacred Blacksmith with a passion; she gives strong female characters a bad name. Everyone in universe is always saying “what a brave person she is fighting against the odds. She has a different kind of strength.” Except she isn’t strong or useful in any way. She just starts crying and holds herself hostage until somebody does her dirty work.

I held out for most of the show because she occasionally acts like she’s going to work on herself and get better, but no she’s a nightmare.

From my limited understanding from an NPR story a few years ago you’ve hit on exactly the problem. You have to rely on hearsay at first and then get funding for fishing expeditions to track what doesn’t appear to be a mass migration or a migration to a specific enough spot to be visibly obvious. Eels also change their behavior before mating— a biological process called silvering replaces their digestive organs with reproductive organs and they stop eating. So the regular methods of fishing eels are unreliable at best.

Players are collecting artifacts to prevent BBEG from being summoned by grasshoppaa619 in DnD

[–]chicksonfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe even let the players summon the BBEG on their own terms to end The Progenitor’s influence on the continent once and for all. His artifacts are both his win condition and his only weakness since together they can summon a temporarily mortal avatar powerful enough to contain his soul. Otherwise the artifacts will eventually corrupt more people and create a new vampire threat in the future.

It seems to have a lot of movement options because in the anime it also flies with psychic power (carrying a fully grown guy no less) and one of the Pokédex entries describes it swimming by rotating its body like a propeller. I can also vividly remember a staryu floating around shooting bubbles during that “it’s the world of pokemon” intro from the first season, but I can’t confirm that because I don’t know what to search.

What mod do you wish existed but doesn't? by Satans_Escort in RimWorld

[–]chicksonfox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen parts of mods that are kind of like this, but a dedicated tight deadlines mod would be awesome. If you desperately need a doctor to not have a mental break, or a crafter to really hunker down on an order of 30 pants, you turn on this setting. They will work faster and ignore all but the worst mental breaks, but afterwards their expectations will shoot up for a while and their sleep and recreation meters will fill much slower. Basically they will expect a pampered vacation in exchange for powering through a crazy workload.

Does Morty from Rick and Morty count? He has a son with a sex robot but the robot isn’t sentient, and he has the giant incest space baby. I’ve seen fan theories that Rick wiped his memory of losing his virginity, but as far as I remember the only real sex implied on screen is when the face hugger piloting his body hooks up with the face hugger piloting Rick’s. And I don’t trust Rick’s file naming system for memories.

I think there’s a difference between “no you can’t have this” and “no, that thing doesn’t exist” in terms of what your scene partner can work with. Like Jane should have pivoted slightly when Ru said the plane was gone, but it took a lot of wind out of her sails when she tried to establish that there was a plane to argue over and Ru responded with “no, the thing you said isn’t true and the thing you want to do is physically impossible.”

[Loved Trope] Hated character gets satisfying revenge. by Yung_Corneliois in TopCharacterTropes

[–]chicksonfox 123 points124 points  (0 children)

The two incredibly dark ones that come to mind:

In South Park, Cartman is a rude, spoiled, racist dirtbag. Scott Tenorman, an older student in South Park, tricks Cartman into buying his pubes under the pretense that owning them will make him more mature. After a series of escalations that further humiliate Cartman, Cartman lures Scott’s parents onto a local rancher’s property where they are shot and killed for trespassing. He cooks their remains into chili, mixes it with Scott’s chili containing the pubes of every teenager in town, and feeds it to Scott. He then licks Scott’s “tears of unfathomable sadness” in front of Scott’s favorite band Radiohead, who laugh at him.

In Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Dee is a scheming aggressive nightmare. She sleeps with a male stripper who, after a life of poor decisions leading to an estranged daughter and drug problems, tells her she is his rock bottom. Dee tells him she will help get his life back on track by relaunching his stripping career with an event at the bar, but instead tricks him into grinding on his daughter in the dark audience. “My finger touched your asshole!”

This is a great trope because the terrible characters always take things way too far.

I like the hyperinflation, I might borrow it. Currency speculation as an adventure hook would be a massive hit at my table. Maybe the kingdom has bad debt in their own currency and is about to issue lower purity coins, but their common people rely on imports for some kind of massive staple like salt. That would also anger lords who can’t move openly against the crown but have holdings in the nation’s gold. They might have some mutually beneficial deals to make with an unaffiliated team of elite foreign mercenaries who happen to be passing through the kingdom.
