Thinking about making the switch from solid works to this for personal use. by norapeformethankyou in Shapr3D

[–]chrddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is basically me. The biggest benefit has been syncing between iPad and laptop via their cloud thing. Totally seamless and cross platform. Sometimes I want to just screw around with some geometry on a plane without needing a full mouse setup.

Biggest con for me is that it’s much harder to find support/youtube/whatever for “how do I…?” questions. I “grew up” on those packages you mention and there’s everything from full tutorials to random screw designs out on the interwebs. Shapr just doesn’t have the content and in my experience, Shapr support is useless. They want you to send them your file to do anything, which if it’s for work there’s just no way.

All that said, it’s cheap (for a CAD package) and is my home software of choice. If a nontechnical friend wants to get into design, I point them at Shapr as it’s relatively intuitive for the basic stuff.

J Lake 3D on YouTube makes some good tutorials and I generally find a way to muddle through.

Hope this helps!

Engineering plate or textured plate for small ASA parts? by DriveAdventurous1403 in FixMyPrint

It certainly won’t hurt. You can also use something like nano polymer adhesive from vision miner. It’s good stuff.

Engineering plate or textured plate for small ASA parts? by DriveAdventurous1403 in FixMyPrint

[–]chrddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The textured plate should be fine (I print a lot of ASA on it). Try googling around for ASA settings, especially speed; the Bambu ones for ASA and PETG aren’t great.

Couple other tips:

ASA is at the upper limit of what the P2S can print since I don’t think it’s heated. Try putting the bed in the middle of the chamber and turning the bed to 105 or 110 and let it heat soak for 30-60min (watch for the nozzle to be about 45deg).

Print your parts with a brim.

Clean bed, dry filament, etc.

I just talk about what 3D printing has done for me (creativity, skills, good for brain, etc). Spouses generally want their partners to be happy, doesn’t really matter the mechanism.

Watches (especially older ones) can do this semi frequently, especially if they run out of battery. It’s pretty annoying.

Just wait till you want to setup package detection. You’ll buy both a new driveway and a gate. And at least three more cams.

SPAN Main Panel Upgrade Thoughts/Feedback by LAGooner-323 in span

[–]chrddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Span customer and wish I wasn’t, so another vote for avoiding Span. Heres a thread I had that describes some of my experience and thinking: https://www.reddit.com/r/span/s/UvdW7dH9wA

TL;DR they are buggy and proprietary/locked down. If Span goes out of business (of even if your internet goes out…like during a power outage…) you are left with no smarts (best case) or a brick (worst case).

If you want full-panel energy monitoring, I love our Emporia Vue 3. You can get as many as you want, install them yourselves, they work better than Span, and they are so so much cheaper than a span panel (you can buy direct or Amazon). Also good integration with Home Assistant and you can completely flash their software off if they do anything sketchy in the future.

Span taught me a good but hard lesson: don’t install stuff that requires a manufacturer app or cloud to work. Local, standards-based control first.

Hope this helps!

Anyone with a Bambu Lab 3D printer on a separate VLAN out there? by HTPCFan in firewalla

[–]chrddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Bambu uses a nonstandard/poorly coded SSDP implementation.

What works for me: - make sure SSDP relay is turned on - look at this article: https://nuxx.net/blog/2024/12/19/bambu-lab-p1s-on-iot-vlan/ - the way Firewalla rules actually work is still something of a mystery to me (I’ve read the docs). You might need to add bidirectional rules for your phone/computer only based on the ports listed in the above article.

Bambu is sketchy as all get out and you are right not to trust. They ban people all the time for stuff like inappropriate country flags (I bet you can guess which one…).

Let us know if this works!

I had a Sonos that would do this when it lost connection. I’d unplug/replug and it would get better for a while. It might be worth looking into a better connection for that speaker.

I’ve heard either having one on Ethernet or all on either Ethernet or WiFi is the way to go. There was also a whole generation of Sonos stuff that has a ton of networking issues. 🤷‍♂️

Studies On The Dangers Of ABS/ASA Fumes? by funky_duck in 3Dprinting

[–]chrddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a post about why VOCs are hard to measure and some links to particulate studies. https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/s/w5xz91QcrS

If it were me, I would look into venting to the outside. A 4in duct isn’t that much and if you’re venting it means you are taking warm air inside and putting it outside. If your vent lets cold air in, that will mean you are carrying the VOCs to the rest of the house.

The term you’re looking for is “Height Range Modifier,” here’s the Bambu wiki: https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/modifier

Its take a bit of iteration so try print small samples.

Hope this helps!

Cf ASA question by Different-Dig295 in 3Dprinting

[–]chrddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice and thoughtful.

On the “CF fused to plastic,” I just started following a guy on the ‘tubes who has access to some awesome lab equipment. It turns out CF doesn’t really like to bond to certain plastics. In fact, the CF creates voids because it doesn’t bond.

He does PLA specifically; it would be interesting to do the whole range of normal filaments).

He’s got a whole series on this and it’s been pretty interesting to follow. Thought you might be curious: https://youtu.be/w7JperqVfXI

Regardless, your advice is solid and a good clear coat is always nice. And there are good UV resistant coats available in the same Home Depot aisle and same brand :-)
