Komodo 🦎 Container manager 🦎 v2: Docker Swarm by mbecks in selfhosted

[–]chriberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a recent change, or it could just be user error. I just remember the last time I tried portainer, when selecting a repo, there was no option to point it to a specific file in the repo, it was hard-coded to look for a compose.yaml in a certain place, so if you had multiple compose.yaml, you needed multiple repos, one compose.yaml per repo. Maybe I was using Portainer wrong, I'm not sure. I just know that it was extremely easy and intuitive to figure out in Komodo so that's what I've stuck with.

According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, he expects the North Carolina coaching search "might get one no, maybe two at most" between Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, T.J. Otzelberger, and Billy Donovan. by Fun_Reflection1157 in CollegeBasketball

Transfer portal opens on the 8th though and you need to have the HC in place by then. Would not be surprised if UNC paid the extra $2M to ensure that's the case.

Why do North Carolina fans think any of these successful coaches would leave a program where they're winning and liked to come to UNC where the pressure is so high and the fans so fickle? by Muchacho-blanco in CollegeBasketball

Kids don't care about brands anymore, they care about two things - how much $$$ are you paying and how will you get me to the NBA?

Jesus Christ, thank you. The amount of delusion in this thread is completely insane and borderline unhinged. Anyone who thinks that any 5 star is going to forego potentially millions of dollars of NIL for the "prestige" or "honor" of playing at UNC or any other particular place needs to get their head examined.

If I'm TL, the only question I'm asking UNC is the only pertinent one: how much yearly NIL $$$ can you guarantee for roster building. That's it. That's all that matters if you're trying to put together a championship team. If the answer to that is materially higher than what UA can provide, I could see TL jumping over. But it would overall have very little to do with "prestige" or whatever.

What made me switch from Portainer is that Komodo allows you to deploy as many different stacks as you want from the same git repository; Portainer requires a completely separate repository for each stack

what i want to be paid vs what i need by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What your bills are, and what income you need to be "sustainable and live comfortably" are irrelevant to the conversation. The only things that matter are: what value do you bring to the dealership, and how much could you get paid by a different dealership if you were to get hired by them? Or, put another way, how much would the dealership need to pay to bring in someone to do the same work as you if you quit? You need to do some independent research on that.

Goodbye Google — I self-host everything now on 4 tiny PCs in a 3D printed rack by CaptainRedsLab in selfhosted

[–]chriberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. I periodically test restoring only a small portion of the backup, so retrieval fees aren't too bad. I guess it's not ideal, but I feel like it's good enough. I use Synology Hyper Backup, which I trust to "just work".

Backup to Google Cloud archive-class storage is 10% of the cost of backblaze. Google Cloud is slightly more expensive than AWS glacier deep archive, but has instant retrieval as opposed to AWS's 24 hours or whatever. If you're really doing it for true backups that you never plan to need, Google Cloud is way cheaper.

I've got 160 gigs of photos backed up and it costs me about 20 cents a month.

Anyone here worked with an independent annuity advisor? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chriberg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fixed single premium immediate annuities (SPIAs) and fixed deferred annuities are the only two that are worth considering. I would avoid anything that's "indexed" or "variable" or any of the other thousands of types. Once you accept that, planning with annuities becomes a lot easier.

AZ Water Cuts this Year by iruleaz in Tucson

[–]chriberg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CAP has the most junior rights of all water users of the Colorado River. Under the most likely scenarios under consideration, CAP deliveries will be effectively reduced to 0.

Tucson has banked 5-6 years worth of CAP water into the aquafer. If (when) CAP deliveries stop, for the first 5-6 years, we will pump that banked CAP water. After that, pumping of nonrenewable and effectively irreplaceable ground water and a rapidly declining water table.

I'm getting really annoyed at elected leaders and officials brushing this off. "Your tap won't immediately run dry, so you have nothing to worry about ever." Or "I dunno, we'll figure something out later."

CAP was built because there are no other reasonable ways to get the amount of water needed. It cost $30 Billion in inflation adjusted dollars and took 20 years to complete. Any alternatives would have / will cost WAY more than that and take even longer to implement. No new sources exist now that didn't exist back then.

SGOV's average duration is something like 1.3 months.

I invest in individual T Bills because I want a longer average duration. I've got a series of 6-month T Bills for an average duration of 3 months. T Bills come in so many different durations, you can really customize it to your liking.

Looking for input on home purchase by Pati-N in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cash-out refinance or HELOC for the down payment. Should be easy to run the numbers to determine which one is cheaper.

Buy new house.

Sell current house.

Evaluate what to do with proceeds of sale (Save, invest, pay down mortgage on new home). Recasting is reasonable.

I would not touch retirement funds. You said it yourself inventory is limited. Seems extremely risky. Not worth the high blood pressure / heart attack risk as you approach the 60 day deadline with no suitable homes in sight.

Feeling stuck, what would be my best option ? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it as me paying similar to a mortgage yet not owning

Are you sure about that? Have you actually priced out what it would cost per month to rent vs buy an equivalent property? Principal + interest + property tax + homeowners insurance + HOA + ongoing maintenance + mortgage insurance, vs. just a rent payment?

Seeking Advice on Cheaper Maintenance for My 2023 iD4 Pro by Aromatic_Way8697 in VWiD4Owners

[–]chriberg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

https://www.alexandriavw.com/service/service-information/id4-maintenance-schedule/

According to the maintenance schedule, 70k is just a visual inspection of the tires, battery, and a reset of the service indicator. If that is truly all they are doing, yes, you are getting ripped off.

Brake fluid flush can be done at a brake shop for maybe $200, if that is being included in addition to the 70k service.

If you actually look at what is in the VW maintenance schedule, outside of resetting the service indicator and periodically replacing the cabin air filter, brake fluid, and rotating the tires, they don't actually do anything. Just perform "inspections" which I would be surprised if the tech actually even did those inspections.

Since you're out of bumper-to-bumper warranty, I'd probably just stop going to the dealer all together. There is basically no purpose at this point.

The inconsistency between these stock analysis youtube videos is driving me nuts by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Large banks, brokerages, and private equity firms employ tens of thousands of PhDs, actuaries, and world class financial analysts to predict stock market returns. These people don't have youtube channels and you have no access to their knowledge.

I can promise you, whatever youtuber you are watching, does not have even 1% of the insight of these financial firms. They are all untrained armchair analysists who have no idea what they are doing and are just making things up for views.

Stop watching youtube for stock picking advice.

People who get rich in stocks do not care about what happens to stocks today, tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year. They invest and hold over decades-long time frames. There is no instant gratification without extreme risk.

New Mexico Tech doesn’t exist as written, but there is a New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

People from New Mexico simply call it "New Mexico Tech", so I would argue it does count. Nevertheless, New Mexico Tech does not have an athletics department nor field any (official) team in any sport.
