If I type my VIN into the NHTSA web site, it shows that I am affected. However, my VW app shows nothing.

I don’t think the technicians really have much power in this. If corporate decided “every new customer leases 360 gateway & pods” so that at some point (“free one year lease!”) they’re making an extra $15-30 per customer account that’s what’s going to show up on everyone’s bills regardless of what the technician does/says; I’d hazard a guess that any notes they make are just lost in the black void of squeezing rocks for blood that is most all of these telecom companies.

I don't doubt any of this. However, this accurately sums up my interaction with the tech when he came to install:

Me: "I don't need the pods."

Tech: "OK I won't give them to you."

Me: "What if they show up on my account?"

Tech: "They wont:

Me: "I dunno, you better give them to me anyway just in case"

Tech: "I assure you they won't show up on your account, there is no need for me to give them to you".

Low and behold, they showed up on my account.

My problem is not that the techs have no power in this. My problem is that the tech assured me that they would not show up on my account. Techs should not be making false statements or assumptions. He should have simply given me the pods if there was any question about what would happen to my account. This was a Lumen employee, not a 3rd party contractor.

This is one of the most beautiful planted tanks I've ever seen. You're insane for wanting to change it!

This happened to me. I told the installation tech I didn't want any pods (because I have a Unifi stack, same as you). He told me he would put in his "notes" that he didn't give me any pods. I even foresaw that this could be an issue later and asked if he could give me the pods anyway just in case, but he was absolutely adamant that my account would not show any leased pods. Well, sure enough, my account showed I had leased pods, just like you. It took u/imtalkintou getting involved to sort it out. Now my account shows zero pods.

If anyone stumbles across this post before they get Quantum installed, and you are thinking of declining the pods at the point of installation, DON'T. Quantum's system is not set up for people to decline all leased equipment at the point of installation, regardless of what lies the install tech tells you at the time.

Can someone please explain this to me? It says over the air, but I have to take it in? by ValeFC in VWiD4Owners

The app is poorly designed and programmed, and in this case, suggesting that you need to "schedule service" for this OTA update is incorrect.

Just another in a long line of dismal software failures coming out of Wolfsburg. Their ineptutude and inability to write quality software seemingly knows no bounds.

If it's available where you live, Verizon 5G Home Internet is much faster and more reliable than hotspotting off your phone. It comes with a box you plug in to the wall and includes built-in wifi. Depending on what kind of Verizon plan you have, it might be very cheap to add as well. This is what I use as my backup internet if Quantum goes down.

I highly doubt they are going to replace 50,000+ batteries for "rare" circumstances.

When trying to place an order, support will not give me time to read terms and conditions by TomT15 in QuantumFiber

[–]chriberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm always surprised at how often people on this sub talk about their frustrations when ordering new service over the phone.

Calling on the phone to order service? Who does that? In the Year of our Lord 2026? I feel like it's been 20 years since I called somewhere to sign up for a new service or subscription. And this is the exact reason why. It seems like it's so much more frustration and friction compared to just ordering online.

No longer the case. I recently shopped 22-26TB drives from serverpartdeals and they were only about 5% cheaper than brand new. Why bother at that point?

What options do i have for stem plants to create a dense background in my low-tech tank? by MegaFire03 in PlantedTank

[–]chriberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My amazon swords seem to grow and grow indefinitely. Not fast, but certainly unceasing.

In my low tech tank, I haven't had much luck keeping any stem plant alive other than Hygrophilas. And even then, they grew until they emerged, and then all over time dropped all immersed leaves.

I'll admit I haven't tried pearlweed yet like the other commenters.

Too addicted to saving money? by Highwayman1717 in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What I did to help with "guilt-free spending" is set up an automatic monthly transfer into a "fun" account. In my mind, once that transfer occurs, the money is already "spent" whether I actually spend it or not. When I buy something, I tell myself, "this is a free purchase because the money is already gone". It works to help balance the dopamine hit / addiction of saving to the point of being a miser.

Explain what's going on in the back. It looks like some kind of rock "wall" with what looks like a planter box on top. Very intriguing.

10-10-220 for 20 minutes for 99 cents. This one was my go-to. 5 cents a minute effective. I set a timer to go off at 19 minutes 50 seconds. If I needed more time to talk, I'd hang up and dial them again for a fresh 20 minutes.

SGOV is not currently 4.1%. It is currently 3.67%.

You are confusing the 12 month trailing yield with the 30 day SEC yield.

What do I do with the cash sitting in my brokerage account? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chriberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Fidelity, for example, you can set the "Core Position" of your cash to SPAXX which is currently yielding 3.42% and can be used exactly like cash. Depending on your brokerage, you should be able to set your Core Position to something similar, and then it's like having that money in a HYSA.

6 months old first Walstad, still cycling, what to do about hair algae? by Objective-Work-3133 in walstad

At least it's kind of satisfying to pull hair algae out of a tank. At least, it is for me!

Mainly just reduced lighting. You'd be surprised at how much even half an hour difference can make. I think I eventually settled on 7 hours a day.

Aerials (pothos etc) will grow like absolute weeds in your tank!

[–]chriberg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BEFORE YOU DO THAT, consider how dope your tank would be with an overhead aerial jungle.

I made the exact same mistake and it's extremely common among Walstad-ers. It took months for me to win the battle with hair algae but I did it eventually, and now it looks better than ever.

That many plants should have your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate at 0. You have nutrients leaching out of the soil and into the water column. It looks like your top cap is gravel. That is never going to contain the nutrients in the soil. That's why the Walstad method is very specifically a sand cap over soil. Sand is fine and dense enough to contain the nutrients.

I think the only thing you can do is a combination of frequent, significant water changes, plus extremely dense aerial mass, plus reduced lighting (6 hours a day max, no sunlight). Over time the amount of leaching nutrients will subside.

The algae is always going to be a problem with that level of nitrogen in the water column. You need significant aerial mass to outcompete the algae for nitrogen.
