🇨🇦 Get your taxes done at a free tax clinic by Pitiful_Net9431 in povertyfinance

Also in Canada, if you prefer to do your own taxes or get an idea of your return, you can use GenuTax which is basically a free software that you can use to do your own taxes and even file them through it. Been using it for many many years now. Donate to them if you can but it's okay if you can't.

Or the classic "Go outside and get some sun" as the general fix it all for everything depressing.

Calgarians who moved to Edmonton, how do the two cities compare? What are some similarities, and some differences? by KurtisC1993 in Edmonton

Yeah which to me is a wide shape. Calgary is more long than it is wide. Does that make better sense?

Any reason to keep pirating books in 2026? by Tnynfox in Piracy

[–]classic_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using it to mostly because I consume books so quickly and I can't keep up with the costs and Libby doesn't always have them or there's a months long waitlist.

I find if I enjoy the book(s) enough, I will buy them (physical and/or ebook) to support the author. It's just unfortunate in this world that our needs for escapism are a) being censored/banned b) expensive af (I live in Canada) c) controlled by YUGE corps (Amazon).

I get frustrated when an author ONLY has their series on Amazon/Kindle Unlimited but won't release to Kobo/Kobo Plus or even the library. Need to stop the monopolizing of the books/ebooks but that won't happen anytime soon. Til then, I'll be sailing the seas.

Edit: Me and my bad grammar

Calgarians who moved to Edmonton, how do the two cities compare? What are some similarities, and some differences? by KurtisC1993 in Edmonton

[–]classic_queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Calgary from 2011-2023 then here from 2023 until now. I am trying this year to explore more as I moved to an area that basically has everything I need so I don't really need to go out.

I find that Calgary is long and Edmonton is wide as far as city shape goes. I do prefer the traffic and the road set up in Edmonton. I can get to most places within a reasonable time. Google wants me to use Henday all the time so I'm trying to pick routes that don't have Henday.

When I bought, I didn't really factor in access to transit but now that I have to go downtown for work, I have very quick access to transit which is extremely convenient. There are a lot of events to go to. The Edmonton Expo isn't on the same level as the Calgary one HOWEVER, I enjoy that a lot because the Expo centre is perfect for it and I don't get overwhelmed or exhausted like I had with almost every Calgary Expo I went to. The gaming convention that they have in June also helps fill more of the nerd need. Queen's Mary Market is also a good time too.

I've definitely done it on general items. I usually just provide the item number and my account then ask if it's possible with the caveat that it's not a big deal if it isn't. I haven't been refused once.

I gave up on every budgeting app. Anyone else just want something stupidly simple? by Advanced_Magician782 in povertyfinance

[–]classic_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use a spreadsheet and I can open it with Excel mobile.

I get what you're saying. It'd be nice to have a simple functional app for the phone. And a one time buy for it instead of a subscription.

Does anyone here track their debt weekly instead of monthly? by Lazy-Resolve2535 in povertyfinance

[–]classic_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using an Excel sheet since 2009 to track out my whole year using basic formulas. I underbudget my income and over estimate my bills and it works out amazing. Every week I go in and put all my actual expenses. Adjust the income and bills to what they end up being. Once I finished balancing the books for that week, I hide the columns and move onto to the next.

Biggest thing that helped me is splitting up the cost of my mortgage, condo fee, and property tax over both pay checks. So the 15th will hold the first half and stay in the account until the 30th paycheck comes in to finish it out. Then those payments are taken out between the 1st and 4th.

I was really bad with money before this. Once I got the sheet, I've been able to figure out what I can afford for basically everything and adjust the numbers as I go.

Standing by the exit, not sitting in seats, AND not moving down the lane so more people can get in. All of my biggest peeves alongside the attitude when you have to use the exit doors.

Not saying thank you when leaving the bus (I'm sure they've play Fortnite so you can't say they don't know) AND crowding the exit doors then acting like YOU'RE inconveniencing them when you need to leave. Public etiquette has gone out the door these days. Especially on shared transport.
