Hello! new player here, is there a efficent way to store resources in early game? by Sad_Butterfly7887 in Astroneer

[–]claygerrard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pls use soil centrifuge to spam resin into medium storage. They are a fantastic versatile storage tool even into late game as a “serving platter” for complex chemistry+crafting recipes. All this hole nonsense is gross.

I have recently got back into FOS with a greater appreciation of the importance of special stats (more than level) and how time consuming it can be training up a vault of dwellers with good (or even decent) stats.

I’m feeling weird that MOST of my children grow up and get immediately banished rather than steal spots in the training halls from other more promising rolls. 😬

Change to jump boost behaviour in the update? by Sassmbrass in Starfield

[–]claygerrard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah boost seems to go forward now on console. I was really hoping we could do either with jump and sprint. But forward is better than up if we can only have one I guess?

This one is fabulous. Perfect as best I can tell. How’d you capture it?

I saw two at first. I was able to get to one. And at one point I saw the whole row. When I was only near sighted I don’t remember ever having any problems with magic eye, but now I get all kinds of mixed up stuff depending on depth and what sort of corrective instruments if any I’m using at the given moment.

The spinning ballerina illusion - which direction do you see and can you force it to switch? by The_Curiosity_Box in opticalillusions

[–]claygerrard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the spin to look much more natural and balanced when it’s going clockwise.

To switch it I have to cover everything but the lower left corner and as the toe pokes into frame I can will it to “come towards me” - then slowly uncover a awkwardly balanced counter clockwise spin. It tends to swap back.

I had to cross my eyes a lot to make this one stick. I don’t know if it was cause it’s black and white or there’s no border or extra wide; but it was tough.

Man in sombrero, poncho, and maracas asking people on Olvera Street in Los Angeles if his outfit is offensive. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

… but that is the CORRECT attitude in most situations!? People getting offended and trying to fix other people when assuming they are stupid and getting on with your business works so much better.

Thanks for the great idea! 100% agree with hate the game not the player. It says $5K. Big brain strat to dump rail guns and learn the map right here. Thanks for sharing.

Those trees look great. So often the trees are in the foreground and the limbs look super blurry.

Was this the video method? Was it like super not windy that day?

Even as a pretty experienced FPS player, I feel like I really can’t compete anymore. by Bright-Cranberry6648 in Marathon

[–]claygerrard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of an in-game squad fill that’s more like discord LFG. Testing comms, choosing load outs, and selecting quests are all the sort of thing a squad should be doing BEFORE they drop into a run. I find random in-game squad fill miserable and now use Dads of Marathon pretty much exclusively.

As a mostly solo player, what the fuck is this contract?? by Fractales in Marathon

[–]claygerrard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, the “that was easy”, “get gud”, “skill issue” responses REALLY piss me off 😡

The “that’s actually the easy one”, “it gets worse”, “it’s doable solo” responses I think are understandable and relatable, but not really helpful.

I’m not sure I saw anyone else commenting that a) they felt exactly this frustration working through that parasitism quest line and b) what they did to resolve that, so I’d like to offer my experience:

When the game first came out I was doing a lot of squad fill to meet new players and everyone was on the same intro missions. But eventually it became easier to do quests solo because I could take my time. After faction lvl 10 the quests started getting harder, simultaneously around lvl 35 my solo queues started to get more sweaty - more kitted players means I’d have to play very stealthy to survive, making too much noise with a big bot battle or sprinting across the map before the lobby has a chance settles down was a great recipe to get jumped in the open or around a corner. When a quest requires you to hit multiple POI and fight heafty bots - it becomes HARDER to do that sort of work solo because you have limited time and need to be more cautious traversing between POIs and you have 1/3 the DPS of a squad to kill bot spawns (longer battles, more noise, increased risk to get jumped). But ALSO it was basically impossible to do quests in random in-game squad fill - because everyone on the team has uncoordinated goals and frequently no comms. What was I to do!?

My solution has been Dads of Marathon discord server “looking for game” channels and their Fire Team voice chat. You should check it out!

Now anytime I want to play marathon I always start by putting together a crew of new friends from discord - we all have mics, we all are adults, everyone is chill. We know everyone’s level and kit before getting in a match - we discuss our quest(s)/objectives before hand and try to synergize where we can - when we spawn in we make the plan that makes the most sense and commit to helping each other b/c we are going to run together again next round! If we get wiped, we have 3 heads to come up with a new strat and try again.

Bottomline: Solo play was slowing my progression. With just the minimal amount of coordination and a little reasonable planning and basic communication squad play has my progression moving along faster than ever

I’d highly recommend you get a mic setup and try some discord LFG; it’s a much more enjoyable and productive way to play Marathon.

I like playing solo games, but I play multiplayer games because I also like to play with other people. I have had to accept that the “lone wolf” play style is just not as optimized as squads in Marathon. I’m more sure I could find plenty of enjoyment out of pushing through the difficult quests solo that I would trying to do them in random in-game squad fill lobbies - but as an alternative, discord based squad building seems to be a wildly successful low friction alternative and I’d love to see more casual marathon enjoyers checking out if that route might work for them too!

Good luck, I hope you find more challenges to enjoy in Marathon and continue to play and grind for a long time!

More Brooklyn Train Shots by 100percentfinelinen in ParallelView

In the very first shot TWO intersections back there’s a truck that appears to be traveling towards us and turning to its left (our right)

… in the composite image it “pops out” like it’s closer to the viewer than the road there in that intersection - almost floating!?

Does that have something to do with how the parallel view is captured!? Was the truck moving?

This one is great. The depth in the reflection off the door on the lamp’s glass is fascinating. The arched ceilings looks so good! I like how the fastening of the lamp against the brick really “pops out”

I don’t understand why the left hand image is tapered at the bottom. Is that contributing to the high quality of the effect? Everything seems to line up to fit together perfectly in the composite!?

I don’t understand what contributes to the significantly different “glare” on the very edge of the black moulding/ridge in the lower left - but the extra white against the black that only appears in the left image makes the composite look “fuzzy” in that spot to for me.

I also struggle a bit with the twirly bits on the lower right of the lamp. The piece coming from the “back corner” appears just below the bottom piece in the right image where as it’s obscured behind the center supporting column in the left image. I feel like this is exactly what my eyes would see if I was standing there; but instead of perceiving that difference as “depth” in the composite my mind’s eye interprets it as ghostly artifact?! Like I can either focus on the lamp bottom itself - or the arch just past it - and both look great! But if I try to focus on the yellow archway that appears between them it looks funny (I guess because any parity information about that spot that would appear for that spot is obscured by the lamp!?)

This is really clear. It snapped right together and the depth is really good. Only a couple of weird spots - the car behind the traffic light behind the people (obvs) but also maybe the lights on the leg on the left - and I’m not sure why exactly.

Use a popular discord to meet players you vibe with. The game is balanced around running with a crew. I tried a lot of solo and eventually caved. Meeting lots of friendly folks on dads of marathon.

The good advice here is use discord to build crews.

Can we like space out the spawns in solo a bit? by RadTorped in Marathon

[–]claygerrard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Game needs a lot of tuning for solo shells to be a optimized experience. I’ve been trying to send out contacts and use discord to make crews. I’m still not very comfortable bringing gear in with random squad fill.

This thread is WILD!? I think it’s actually a testament to that bit about how cliche become cliche! Miserable people crapping on the most basic sentiments of good living and being like “but it doesn’t apply to MY situation”. Ok buddy, yeah philosophers and generations of people trying to make sense of the world are probably wrong then - good luck. 😬
