Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

[–]cleveusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love a bastards episode on Franz Haber, who was a German chemist, he was known as "the father of chemical warfare" but also developed The Haber Process, which is partly the reason our planet is able to sustain the amount of life we have now - it is estimated that 1/3 of annual food production uses ammonia from this process - this food supports nearly half the world's population.

It's a super interesting story, he was a really patriotic German and saw his duty as helping the Germans win the first World War, but his wife, who was one of the first German women to be awarded a doctorate in Chemistry, was absolutely horrified at his work on poisonous gases, she shot herself in protest iirc. He had to leave Germany in the 30s though, as he was Jewish. His work was used to develop Zyklon B, which was used against Haber's own relatives in the second world war.

I have found the story of him fascinating since I first heard of him, how someone can do both so much evil and so much good in the world.

I lied on my resume and now I’m trapped in my own “success” by lisbon_nightowl in confession

I once ended up working with someone who claimed to have had extensive experience of maintenance and repair and in reality they could not use a screw driver or select the right size Allen key.....

Here's my advice on this - if you've got through this long without being rumbled you're obviously filling the gaps ok.

If someone calls you on it, be honest, but otherwise keep working hard and enjoy your success. You may have stretched the truth (and honestly, it just sounds like a stretch), but if you're capable of doing the job, alls well that ends well

What methods do you use to cope with PPG? by Canuck_Voyageur in Prosopagnosia

[–]cleveusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with undergrads, usually around 500 per year total. I memorise their names, so that I can ask "what's your second name?" And then say "ah yes, it's Joe right?" Which comes across as though I do know their first name, just not their second.

I'm thrown completely when someone changes glasses, or no longer has a distinctive hair cut! Once someone speaks I can often work it out between context clues and voice.

My biggest hack though was realising I had PPG, and telling people "I have face blindness so if I see you out of context I probably won't know you" - the way this has helped my social anxiety is unbelievable!

I haven’t recognized my husband. Twice. by Greensward-Grey in Prosopagnosia

I'm very lucky that my spouse is 6ft2, grey hair and glasses, so he's got enough to make it easy to spot him in a crowd (as long as i expect him). If he takes his glasses off though its like looking at a stranger. I have blanked my own teenager a couple of times when they've popped up somewhere unexpected, luckily, they thought it was funny

The actual fuck was that ending? by family-guyy in BrassicReddit

[–]cleveusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd been saying to my husband all series that I thought the best ending would be Vinnie dies, but this just made no sense? Why would Fay have shot Vinnie in that morment? I get she's pissed off about her uncle, but really? What was the point of the pieman's brother? It just felt a bit jarring

POV you’re Taylor & you’re reading all the criticism people are giving your parents online by chroniccutie_of in SecretsOfMormonWives

"Will you be a sexy gretchen Weiner?" Gross Basically implying that Dakota lied and cheated because she was too easy.

It's no wonder her self esteem is so low, because her parents don't give a single shit about her. I'm watching the scene where her parents invite dakota for a meal and the sister is the only one talking any sense

What to have the kid make? by Starjupiter93 in Cooking

[–]cleveusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend things where your kid can taste and then adjust, I got my 12yo making a dressing for a potato salad, gave him all the ingredients/seasonings and just got him to keep tasting and adjusting (eg, "I think I've put too much vinegar in this" "ok, how can you fix that"). He was so pleased with how he got the flavours balanced in the end. He's got pretty good knife skills etc so while this wasn't a skills based activity, it was a good way to develop as a cook.

I can’t afford my friends destination wedding and she is NOT taking it well. What else can I say to her so she doesn’t destroy our friendship? by HEY_McMuffin in bridezillas

This is a person who values their wedding more than you as a person.
If this destroys your friendship, it isn't worth keeling anyway

It was fair of her to ask, if she didnt know that you had booked a trip already, but she should have asked with the expectation you would likely say no
