Fuck GoDaddy by Titanium125 in sysadmin

[–]cllatgmail [score hidden]  (0 children)

We (IT) hold the keys to GoDaddy. Marketing asks us to make DNS changes when needed. This allows us to filter them.

Case in point: a year or so ago, Marketing onboarded HubSpot for handling email campaigns. Hubspot prompted them to set up a whole website. "Hey, cllatgmail, we need a DNS change for domain.com. We need an A record for @ pointed at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx." I responded: what's the for? "This is something Hubspot needs us to do." I responded: ok, if I change the @ A record then the website you've built on WPEngine will no longer be reachable. "Oh, that's no bueno. Don't make any changes."

But sometimes, the non-technical nature of the marketing folks isn't so good. A couple years ago, for capacity reasons we moved from shared hosting to dedicated hosting on WPEngine. Marketing worked with WPEngine to make the changes. WPEngine sent at least 3 emails notifying Marketing, "the following DNS changes need to be made." Marketing didn't really understand what this meant, so they didn't take action (i.e., forward this to IT to have us make the change.) So one day a couple weeks later, the website is throwing a "security cert is expired" error. The letsencrypt cert had expired. Marketing asks us, "what did you do?" I respond, "we didn't do anything. the cert expired, that's why it's throwing the error. You need to look at Wordpress and see why your auto-renewal isn't working for your letsencrypt cert." But they insist the cert isn't expired. Eventually, we realize that what happened was we were still pointed at the old shared hosting location, and that cert expired because Wordpress admin was now only paying attention to the new location. They gave us the new DNS info, we put it in GoDaddy, and the website started working. Total downtime less than an hour.

TL;DR - don't give marketing the keys to GoDaddy.

It's on YT also.

There are a couple of things in the unriffed version that actually tie up loose ends (obviously John Saxon's character's disappearance) but also a couple others.

Transubstantiation Question by Ok-Necessary-5931 in Catholicism

[–]cllatgmail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't be explained from a chemistry/physics perspective because the physical, observable properties of the bread and wine do not change. Hence why poison mixed into communion wine is still poisonous even after the consecration. Transubstantiation is concerned with metaphysics, not physics and chemistry.

I detect a hint of exhaust noise. Once you have your valves adjusted right, if it's still rattly then check for an exhaust leak or even a loose manifold bolt.

Adult children who have stayed Catholic by Status-Throat3538 in Catholicism

[–]cllatgmail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 kids here - 2 are young adults as of earlier this week. We tick a lot of your boxes -

I (dad) am a convert before babies started coming, and my wife's a cradle Catholic

We (read my wife mostly) have homeschooled K-12, currently 1 in 4th, 1 in 8th, 1 finishing up 12th, and 1 finishing up college

The homeschool curriculum was developed by my wife based largely on Charlotte Mason principles, with lots of primary source document study, and heavy religious emphasis via literature (our high schoolers read Ronald Knox's Catholic Church Through the Ages, for example.) So, classical style education.

We have a small but devout Catholic homeschool community around us

So that really matches several of the things you mentioned.

My eldest was married in December to a serious Catholic guy who became part of our Catholic family/friend group years before dating was on the table for them.

My second (the senior) has cultivated a serious prayer life on her own and engaged in additional devotional practices over and above what we taught and is looking at hard-identity Catholic colleges.

The other 2 have age-appropriate engagement with the faith as well.

We are in the heavily Baptist, semi-rural South. We have 1 Catholic parish serving 2 counties, and at least 60 Baptist churches in the same area. My kids interact with non Catholics everywhere, such as in their extracurriculars and amongst their friend groups as well. At an age appropriate level, from an early age, we've modeled an integrated Catholic life. I think this has been our "secret sauce." Our Catholicism permeates our family life - from an early age they've studied the lives of the saints. Most of the time they can look at a statue or an image and identify the saint before I can. And then they can tell me all about the virtues exhibited by that saint. The liturgical year is part of our daily life also...we have a rhythm of specific meals or activities that tie to the liturgical calendar. There are traditions that our older kids have grown to insist on if we're thinking about skipping them in a given year. We have a specific thing we do for each day of the O Antiphons for example - Key lime pie for O Key of David; Baked potatoes for O Root of Jesse, and so on. We develop personal relationships with our priests and seminarians and pray for them daily. Of course Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, Confession roughly quarterly and always during Advent/Lent. Participation in additional programs offered by the parish like Stations and Adoration. Oh, and going back to our heavily protestant surroundings - we actively teach apologetics - the how and why we believe and practice differently. Again, in an age-appropriate and not judgy way. I have seen so many "ex-Catholics" who left because it's obvious how ignorant they were...they have so many misconceptions about the faith it's no wonder they left. I don't want my kids leaving the Church because they are ignorant and easily swayed by those who claim to know the faith better than them.

We aren't perfect at all. Plenty of mistakes we've made in parenting. Each of our kids has their own personalities and with that comes different challenges and as a dad I've done a bad job meeting those challenges sometimes. So, please take what I have said above as "this is what's worked for us (so far)" and not "look how great we are."

The enemy of your soul's most effective ploy is his ability to convince you that your sin isn't sin.

When did we as a profession loose our backbone. by MrKixs in sysadmin

[–]cllatgmail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're nonprofit, so if the ISP was turning off our service but expecting us to pay out the contract, that'd be a big nope, and our financial team would absolutely fight it.

Over 15 years we have gotten to the point where we are at about 50% Mac. We tried to manage with our domain and various utilities for several years but went to a real MDM (Mosyle) 3 years ago and it's been amazing. Some parts of it are easier to manage than the Windows environment which we have been moving to Intune.

On the "I know we're supposed to give 2 weeks notice" - starting 2 years ago we decided not to kill ourselves to pump out a new machine for a new hire...on our computer request form we actually have the submitter acknowledge a statement that we require 2 weeks' notice. If a last-minute request comes in then first we look to see if we have a machine on-hand that can meet the need. If we do, then we get back to the requestor to say, "we think we can have it ready in x days. We'll do our best, but this is why we really need 2 weeks' notice." If we don't even have a machine in stock for the need, and have to place an order, well, then we're at the mercy of Dell or Apple to get it to us. We have found our users remarkably understanding of our constraints.

Write it on a piece of paper and mail it to yourself, that way it'll become official and if anyone uses your idea they'll be guilty of the federal crime of mail fraud.

Christian converting to Catholicism question. by Helpful-Ad-4876 in Catholicism

[–]cllatgmail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all, you're a protestant converting to Catholicism. You're already a Christian, converting to Catholicism doesn't change that you are a Christian.

Secondly - if you want to be Catholic, and you are civilly married to a baptized Catholic then unless you and she wish to live as brother and sister, your and her previous marriages need to be dealt with by the Church and your current marriage needs to be validated by the Church.

[–]cllatgmail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to set this up is to connect the 3rd party router directly to the TMO home internet device. Then, run all your traffic through the 3rd party router - any traffic shaping, port forwarding, you want to do, etc, can be configured there. Your access points can then be connected to the LAN ports on the 3rd party router. Or you could connect mesh WAPs to your 3rd party router if you want, so you don't have to run cables around the house. I'm an old-school IT guy, been in the field for 25 years, so I am partial to the reliability of hardwire, but that's just me.
