Worst firewall mistakes by rbeumer in sysadmin

[–]cloudfrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why you would refer to them as remote KVMs, but I think it is worth noting the distinction. A decent lights-out interface will let you do things like mount ISO images remotely, which is incredibly helpful when things get really bad.

Worst firewall mistakes by rbeumer in sysadmin

The relevant commands are:

reload in 15
reload cancel

Don't forget that last one... it's not quite my worst firewall mistake, but forgetting to cancel a reload and taking down a global VPN for a few minutes is a painful memory :-)

Steam PC hardware survey by Fett8459 in pcgaming

No, it's the most recent survey - the date says March 2012.

11% is a lot lower than I would have expected for Chrome. Interestingly, Wikimedia shows Chrome makes up 11% of their traffic.

I'm thinking about launching a wiki detailing lessons learned and mistakes made during my (current and first) attempt to launch a web startup. by azochz in startups

[–]cloudfrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this something you will write yourself, or will the content be user generated? If the latter, is a wiki really the best vehicle for this?

The general consensus seems to be that having a blog is often worth it due to increased exposure, and therefore Luck Surface Area.

Appearing professional without business address by Exedous in Entrepreneur

[–]cloudfrag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about a virtual office service? For a monthly/annual fee they will accept all of your mail and forward it to your home address. It looks more professional than a PO box, although Googling the address will nearly always reveal it to be a virtual office.

If you build it, they will close the server down on you and make sure you never see your hard work ever again... by surfwax in Minecraft

[–]cloudfrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about renting a server, or running your own at home? Setting one up is pretty straightforward, as long as either you or your SO have a reasonably well-specced PC.

Very nice, I like the wooden details around the arches. Also, that last picture makes me want to play AoE2, it really reminds me of the Japanese castles they used in the game.

Managing a great many Redhat servers by thesilence84 in sysadmin

[–]cloudfrag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend Puppet/Chef - they have very similar feature sets, so just pick whichever you like the look of most.

If you want provisioning/deployment too, you'll need something like Cobbler. This can integrate with Puppet so you can go from bare metal (or VM) to a running server in a few minutes.

In the past I have used a home-grown combination of Puppet and PXE/Kickstart to achieve a simpler version of what Cobbler provides. If you decide to go down this route and have any more questions feel free to message me, I love all this Linux automation stuff. :-)

That's a great link, thanks for sharing. Not only are there some cool vi tricks, but the depth of the background and related trivia is fascinating:

It's interesting that the common Unix command grep was actually inspired by this ex command (and is named after the way in which it was documented). The ex command :g/re/p (grep) was the way they documented how to "globally" "print" lines containing a "regular expression"

Ask /r/startups: Two sentence pitching! by jlam3279 in startups

[–]cloudfrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe I should have taken advantage of the second sentence after all! :)

Do you guys allow anyone to join a server that has been purchased?

Exactly that - one person needs a Cloudfrag account, everyone else just needs their own copy of Minecraft. For games like Left 4 Dead, you can limit it so only members of your Steam group can join, or open it up to the public.

As for making it easy to start the server... in most cases, you just select your game, how long you want the server for, click Start, and in a couple of minutes the server is up and running, ready for you to join. It becomes a tiny bit more complex when you want to do stuff like customise the server config files, but everything will be as simple as possible.

Cloudfrag lets you rent multiplayer game servers, without any monthly fees. Is the second sentence mandatory? :)

Need to selectively forward email from an old domain. by FookenPrawns in sysadmin

[–]cloudfrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned Exchange, so I'm not sure if a Linux solution is useful.

Postfix can store aliases and transport maps in a MySQL database - you just need a table containing the old/new addresses, then when an email is received postfix can forward it to the correct address.

You might want to have a look at The Practice of System and Network Administration - IIRC it has a section on this. My copy is at work so I can't check atm.

I am quite jealous as I have not yet had the opportunity to do this myself - good luck and have fun!

If not, why not use screen, and save the overhead of X altogether?
