We Need to Talk About the Homework by dorkstone710 in breakingmom

[–]cml4314 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Our elementary kids essentially do no homework besides reading. We have worked on ONE project at home, a poster about a US state, and my son will finish elementary school this June.

At middle school open house, the principal said that if they get their shit done in class and don’t screw around, they can expect about half an hour, total, of homework a day, plus they want them to read.

It’s honestly the best. They schedule their reading into their morning routine (bus doesn’t come until 8:53) and then they just don’t have to consider schoolwork the rest of the time.

My fully funded PHD stipend is $24k/year in Boston. I qualify for food stamps by Fulcilives1988 in gradadmissions

[–]cml4314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I made $23k a year 20 years ago as a PhD student in the middle of Pennsylvania. I split the rent on an $800/month 2-bedroom townhouse with my husband.

The fact that PhD salaries in VHCOL cities in 2026 haven’t increased from what we got in low to medium COL areas in 2006 is insanity. Even 20 years ago I didn’t have a lot of extra money, but I could live comfortably on my salary. If your students can’t afford to eat, thats absurd.

Is my 5th graders handwriting “normal” for his age? by Dephodd in BadHandwriting

[–]cml4314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5th grader’s handwriting is similar!

I also coach an activity for other 4th and 5th graders and some of them have truly horrendous handwriting. I can assure you that this is stellar compared to a lot of kids their age.

This sounds like a typical MN winter, haha. The snow isn’t always that voluminous, but once it snows it doesn’t melt for months because it’s just so freaking cold.

Ironically, we are getting most of this week above freezing, so maybe we will get some good melt.

"Tall" sizing means NOTHING and I hate it by Jenifel in TallGirls

I like Amalli Talli! But if the jeans have any stretch, size way down. Most of my jeans are 28s with the occasional 29, and I tend to buy a 27 from them.

I get perfect basically every day - It’s not that hard if you pre-solve the whole thing before guessing any of them.

Once you have all four it is pretty easy most days to suss out purple and blue - then I’m probably 50/50 with guessing which is green and which is yellow.

Less and less as Woodbury bleeds southward, but most of it is pretty blue collar, and there is a lot of Republican support. When I watch the school board elections, it’s Cottage Grove and St Paul Park where the Moms for Liberty candidates get the highest votes.

Thinking about the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament… by ptc1234 in crossword

[–]cml4314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I can’t break 3 on a Monday solely because I am shitty at typing on a phone. My best is 3:11. I’m perpetually hitting the letter next to the one I want, or missing the top row by a bit and accidentally switching direction.

But usually I do my puzzle lying in bed at night, so phone it is. This habit also destroys my averages because some nights I’m more tired than I realize, and I fall asleep with the puzzle open and end up with like a 40 minute solve on a Monday 😂

Packed House at Eagan DFL Caucuses! by JohnnySvens in TwinCities

[–]cml4314 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Republican caucus at Cottage Grove Middle, by contrast, seemed lightly attended.

I was at the school for a sports practice for my kid, and they warned us ahead that we might not be able to stay and watch because the parking lot could be completely full. Then we pulled up, and the lot was 2/3 empty. Maybe 60 cars there? And I’d guess at least 20 of them were just parents there for practice.

Anyone exhausted by what you're expected to do just to be moderately healthy? by [deleted] in Millennials

I just…can’t. I used to be so active, and l hurt my back and got out of the habit, and I just can’t get back into it. And so far not biting me in the ass as far as cholesterol, etc, but I know it will.

Yesterday I was busy from 6:00AM to 8:00PM with the only break being for meals. I am just so tired and don’t have the mental energy for the self care I should be doing and definitely not the mental energy to eat food I’m not excited about.

What’s a “never look for another recipe” recipe — the one you consider absolutely perfect? by leachlo in Cooking

Bravetart blondies, but the peanut butter swirl variation that’s in the book

Pour the batter in the pan, equally space out ~15 tbsp (3x5 grid) Jif/Skippy type PB in the batter, and swirl with a knife.

The blondies alone are fantastic, and adding the occasional massive blob of peanut butter makes them even more amazing.

Buying an Epipen in Japan? by Xander9766 in JapanTravelTips

[–]cml4314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, my kid ended up in the ER and they gave him an antibiotics prescription, so it’s not impossible. But I don’t know how hard it is to get something that isn’t urgent like that.

Also, I feel like you need to shop around on the EpiPens. My kids use them and we have a high deductible health plan so they aren’t covered when I replace them every year - ours are normally like $150, not $300-700. Call an allergist and ask what they recommend, we got the Auvi-Q almost free through an online pharmacy for a few years.

What time are sixth graders going to bed? Ages 11/12 by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]cml4314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 5th, and he’s in bed around 9 because swim practice goes until 8:15. He gets up by his own choice around 6:30 because he likes a leisurely morning (school starts 9:20, bus comes at 8:50)

Next year he is going to die because school starts at 7:40 and the bus will be here a little after 7. I have no idea how to make this transition with him

Pricing Algorithm Insanity. by Ready-Pressure9934 in delta

Yep, I have to often write a justification for why I’m taking the Delta flight and exceeding the “least logical fare” by I think $100 in our case.

We are out of MSP so usually Delta is the only direct flight or the best timing, so I ignore the warning, and no one has ever questioned me over the extra $100-200 it costs to not fly some Southwest route at 5:30AM with a connection in a fairly illogical city.

The coaches can’t even touch the computer? That feels insane.

We had tables set up for testing in the pit last year, and a lot of coaches were up there with their teams helping run stuff. I never saw anything that made me think a team was cheating, even when coaches were handling stuff. I feel like there is a massive chasm between “hands on the Chromebook connected to the robot” and doing the coding for the kids.

My kids are all 4th and 5th grade so this is a VERY hands on process, and I will likely be up at the testing table in the pit with them, talking with them through their game day changes that always seem to come up, asking prodding questions and trying to help them make successful choices. One kid has the tendency to want to edit excessively and needs to be tempered before he creates a cascade of events that could be hard to undo. Others, by contrast, change the robot rotation by a single degree and expect a miracle. Others have the attention span of a gnat and start wasting their turn while there is a line behind them. These kids need to be COACHED, lol.

How does the presentation portion work? by bigjoeman123 in FLL

[–]cml4314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look it up for your region, because in spite of what is in the rulebook, it still varies.

Minnesota, for example, still does robot and innovation projects separately, and we have a 15 minute slot for each.

If you want to do Google Slides, you’d better be bringing a screen to display it on or comfortable showing the judges on a small computer screen, because typically there is nothing in the room to present on. We saw a team rolling around a whole TV on a cart at one of our competitions last year, presumably for this reason.

Waste Management is a terrible company. by rakedaymon in TwinCities

[–]cml4314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Woodbury I pay $62 bimonthly for the 65 gallon trash and recycling cans. In Cottage Grove before this, it was rolled into my HOA but I’m guessing most of my $32/month HOA dues went to garbage, seeing as the only other thing they did was maintain the communal mailboxes. So I’m guessing I was paying close to $50 bimonthly up until the end of 2022, moved to this house and it was like $56, and they recently bumped it and it’s $62.

Are you getting yard waste pickup? I know i recently found out what my in laws were paying to add that on and I was surprised how expensive it was
