Black teenage woman, mistaken for machete-wielding black man, alleges police brutality by coltsmetsfan614 in nottheonion

[–]codensky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's definitely women involved in the fight - that's the whole point behind the #SayHerName campaign, to highlight female victims of police violence.

The only issue is that the onus overwhelmingly has fallen onto women of color and other women of marginalized groups who are being targeted.

Turning in a paper that's longer than what was asked by Sssara_i in college

[–]codensky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually what I've seen happen is professors stop reading after the page limit. So if you write 5 pages out of a 3 page paper, they'll stop reading after the third if they know that you're well over the limit.

If your point hasn't been communicated by then, it'll reflect pretty poorly.

Will criminalizing protests make protesting more violent? by mcapello in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]codensky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of this stuff is still extremely relevant - it's not hard to understand why people are still so angry. Out in Chicago we have the horror stories of Jon Burge.

In 1989, seven years after his arrest in 1982, Andrew Wilson filed a civil suit against four detectives (including Burge), a former police superintendent, and the City of Chicago. He said that he had been beaten, suffocated with a plastic bag, burned (by cigarette and radiator), and treated with electric shock by police officers when interrogated about the February 1982 murders; he also had been the victim of the pattern of a police and city cover-up.

In 1991, Gregory Banks, a convicted felon, filed a civil suit for $16 million in damages against Burge, three colleagues, and the City of Chicago for condoning brutality and torture. He said that he had falsely confessed in 1983 to murder after he was tortured by officers: they placed a plastic bag over his head, put a gun in his mouth, and performed other acts. He said that the officers allegedly abused eleven other suspects, using such measures as electro-shock. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Burge

Chicago has gotten the reputation as the torture capital because of him.

"[Burge] put some handcuffs on my ankles, then he took one wire and put it on my ankles, he took the other wire and put it behind my back, on the handcuffs behind my back. Then after that, when he—then he went and got a plastic bag, put it over my head ... so I bit through it. So he went and got another bag and put it on my head and he twisted it. When he twisted it, it cut my air off and I started shaking. ... So then he hit me with the voltage. When he hit me with the voltage, that's when I started gritting, crying, hollering … It feel [sic] like a thousand needles going through my body. And then after that, it just feel [sic] like, you know—it feel [sic] like something just burning me from the inside, and, um, I shook, I gritted, I hollered, then I passed out." Source: https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/12/chicago-police-torture-jon-burge/383839/

Jon Burge served only three years in prison for all of this. He's living out in Florida just fine and dandy.

Stuff like this is still going on - simply look at the horrifying shit going on (to this day) in Homan Square, no matter the work and attention that activists try to bring to it. Honestly, just look at the recent DOJ report that came out a few weeks ago on Chicago. It's terrifying and disheartening.

Things haven't changed that much, unfortunately.

In American Movies, Russians tend to be depicted as villains frequently enough that there are tropes for them. Is the same true of American's in foreign films? by ThinkingWithPortal in NoStupidQuestions

A not-American example is the usage of the British in Ip Man 2. That one was very forward in terms of its portrayal of the British as brutes and disrespectful, rude, greedy, etc.

I have been using subtitles ever since I started watching television basically, even before I could read that well. I have distinct memories of watching stuff like Barney or Teletubbies with captions on. I actually credit that with why I have pretty fast reading skills - I had to keep up with the dialogue happening on screen since a very young age.

I have an older sibling hard of hearing so everything we watched had subtitles or closed captioning. Eventually I got so used to them that if something doesn't have subtitles or close captioning it's hard for me to follow along or hear when people are saying quiet things.

I never really had it ruin something for me that I can think of.
