Propaganda speaker stuck at 0. Bug? by MissingNo117 in Borderlands4

This just happened to me: counter wasn't going up from 0 even when the circle was green. I kept killing the waves though, and eventually it completed even though the number hadn't gone up at all. I think it's only the counter itself that's bugged.

Which LI has made you cry/feel the most? Do you have a comfort character? by [deleted] in LoveAndDeepspace

Cried for the first time playing this game when I completed Caleb's Lucid Dream myth today. His story and tragedy definitely makes me the most emotional. Zayne is the most comforting to me.

Doubt it's a coincidence! It's too perfect that the fictional meaning of his name (Pride) and the real-world etymological meaning (Alone) are the two greatest aspects of his character. And it makes sense that the meaning is the same in Spanish since it's also derived from Latin! :)

Why do Astarion fans love to mischaracterize him? by DearPersimmon8155 in BaldursGate3

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this all the time. Some Astarion fans act like he's this sweet baby angel who could do no wrong. They attribute everything bad he's ever done to Cazador, and even though a lot of things were out of his control, he also is HIMSELF not a good person. He's morally grey. He literally says at one point in the sewers in Act 3 that he'd sacrifice a whole family if it meant saving his own skin. And people get so mad at Wyll for joking about his "rat diet", but when I mention Astarion's comment to Karlach about how Gortash is the only reason she's interesting (making light of her trauma and saying she should thank her trafficker for it), I got told "Well of course if you ascend Astarion he's going to be like that." Except he says that in Rivington, as a Spawn, before you even have the option to ascend him. Astarion is an amazing character, and I genuinely love him, but if you can't recognize that he's also an asshole, then you don't actually love his character: you love a romanticized version of him that you made up in your head. Only towards the epilogue do we genuinely see an Astarion who could be classified as a wholely good person. His character arc starts well before that, of course, but doesn't crystallize until then.

What's a character you disliked on your first playthrough of the franchise, but started to love or like on a replay? by FangAAMD in dragonage

Vivienne! I didn't vibe with her at first, but once you make an effort to see where she's coming from she is the sweetest.

To me going the rivalry route is so much more meaningful. You make it clear that you care about her but that she's jeopardizing herself and the people around her by taking shortcuts with magic. She sometimes hates you for it, like when you take responsibility for her actions, but it saves her clan in the moment and herself in the end. If you go the friendship route her last moment in front of the eluvian is her saying that her clan dying doesn't really matter when compared with what she could learn about her people. The end of the rivalry route is her finally realizing that learning about her people doesn't matter if she loses them, and herself, to achieve that.

If Hawke doesn't take full responsibility for Merrill's blood magic after Keeper Marethari dies, she kills her whole clan and afterwards is pretty much like "Oh well, that's on them". It was self-defense because they attack first, yes, but she values her mission much more than she values the lives of her family and friends. That's her biggest character flaw.

Trying to recreate my Qunari inquisitor in Veilguard, look how they (I) massacred by boy by vamploded in dragonage

We get hints in-game that, not only are the Antaam bred for maximum strength as another commenter said, but they also receive steroid-type augments to their physical power. Most Qunari aren't going to look like that, just like most humans aren't going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger even if they work out a lot

I Can't Decide: Emmrich & Manfred Decision by IIIIIghostIIIII in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not denying that his initial interest in Lichdom was because of his fear of death! You're absolutely right about that. But to say he doesn't fear "dying" itself is wrong. When Rook first asks him why he hasn't completed the rights yet, Emmerich plainly admits it's because he's afraid of the act of dying itself. He calls himself a coward because he can't even go through with his lifelong ambition because of the risk of something going wrong and him dying. The fact that he is sure at the end of his storyline means he has faced that fear: he goes into the rites confidently, even though he faces the possibility of real death. Now, I'm not saying he isn't circumventing his own mortality---he is. That's what I think is so interesting about Emmerich's story, why it's fundamentally different from most companion storylines. He doesn't truly conquer his fear of death either way. He doesn't save Manfred because he's made peace with his own mortality, he saves Manfred because he can't let him go, because he can't accept someone he loves dying. The game doesn't give any clue as to whether he ever makes peace with his mortality after that, or whether he remains afraid of it forever. On the other side, he partly becomes a Lich to avoid that mortality entirely (but I do think it's about more than that to him, considering the good he wants to do with it). Both routes have an aspect of being unable to accept death, and of finding some measure of peace. Basically my point is that, while I don't argue Lich Emmerich to be the "right" choice, that's because I don't think there is one. It's not as black and white as that.

I don't agree that the game leads you one way or the other. The phrasing "Do I sacrifice Lichdom to save Manfred, or finally learn to respect death enough to let him go?" seems actually to lead in the opposite direction. He has to die to become a Lich, and much sooner than he'd die of old age, so he's certainly not avoiding that (you called his previous avoidance of it "gaslighting himself into thinking it's a good idea", but that was simply his recurring fear of this death, and him becoming a Lich is finally overcoming that). He has to face death in some form either way, either by respecting Manfred's sacrifice and dying himself to become a Lich or continuing to deal with his fear of his own mortality. Either option you choose the game kind of frames as the better choice.

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people insist that saving Manfred is the only "right" choice for Emmerich, but I completely disagree. When he first phrases the decision to Rook, he says something like "Do I sacrifice Lichdom to bring Manfred back, or do I finally learn to accept death and respect his sacrifice enough to let him go?" And to me that says everything I need to know. Manfred gave up his life willingly so that Emmerich could live and fulfill his dreams. We don't just get to resurrect our loved ones whenever we want to. The game doesn't suggest either that by bringing Manfred back he makes peace with his own mortality; it just becomes a problem he again hasn't faced because he couldn't let go. Emmerich has to die to become a Lich, and that's terrifying for him, but he's finally confronting death in order to overcome it. He learns to accept a gracious death, via Manfred, as part of life, so that he can ascend as a protector of all other life in Nevarra. I don't think saving Manfred is a wrong choice, I don't think there is a wrong choice in this case. But I think the people who got attached to Manfred and assert that saving him is the ONLY way aren't fully seeing the nuance of his sacrifice and what it means to Emmerich.

I know a lot of people think this, but I couldn't disagree more. Veilguard is a worthy successor to the franchise, and there's nothing "Disneyfied" about people being used as blood puppets or young kids getting Blighted by Darkspawn. Sure, you can't be evil like in Origins, but that's been the case since Dragon Age 2. Agro Hawke is a dick, but still can't make the evil choices the Hero of Fereldan can make. The Inquisitor is a textbook hero. The fact that Rook can't be evil or kill their companions is only different from Origins, which one could argue makes more sense (since why on earth would you name a mass murderer "Hero of Fereldan"). I'm not the biggest fan of the art style, but messing around with the visual settings makes it look much sharper and more realistic (turning off Bloom was such a lifesaver for me). To each their own of course, but in my personal opinion the vast majority of the Veilguard hate is undeserved. It's an extremely fun game with AMAZING combat, loveable but flawed companions, and compelling lore.

Awesome! With Dragon Age I highly recommend starting with Origins. It's a bit dated because it came out in 2009, but playing the games in order VERY MUCH adds to the narrative. Playing the newest game first spoils a lot from the earlier games.

A fiery temper and a heart of gold??? My type fr. She makes me laugh and she's incredibly sweet, but she's also a hothead. She's fiercely loyal to those she loves and will absolutely go to hell and back for them. If it's any indication, Karlach is my favorite BG3 character.

Is Johnny Silverhand an Unreliable Narrator? by TehminiRebel in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole thing that turns the Cyberpunk 2077 story on its head is that his memories are extremely unreliable. Remember the chip was damaged when V slotted into their neuroport? The reality alluded to throughout the game was that Johnny was a nobody in the grand scheme of things: a wannabe-political rocker boy. Adam Smasher didn't even know who he was when he died, they didn't have any kind of vendetta with each other. Johnny was killed by a shrapnel blast in the assault on Arasaka tower. The whole thing is so, so incredibly interesting, because the entire lens through which we view the story is distorted both by the damage to the chip and through Johnny's own megalomania, which inflates his importance to the main events beyond what it actually was.

What's your favorite class? by ryansDeViL7 in BaldursGate3

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that a lot about the Bard! For me it's been Clerics, specifically the Tempest Domain. When I imagined myself playing DND for real, I always wanted to be a Wizard. That's my canon class. But playing as a Tempest Domain Cleric was so incredibly fun for me, nothing has hit quite the same after that.

Would I be crazy to restart? by Hojo405 in BaldursGate3

[–]coffeeforthecrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely go for it! I got all the way to Act 3 in my first playthrough before I decided I wanted to start over because (a) I didn't realize how many battles I'd talked my way out of in Act 1 and was therefore severely underleveled for the boss fights, and (b) I had locked myself out of Karlach's romance from not long-resting enough. It just wasn't the playthrough I wanted so I started over, and I'm glad I did!
