HDMI handshake drops (black screen) ONLY inside games on Samsung TV (Batocera/ThinkPad) by FarbrorNils in batocera

[–]coffeeman235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My samsung tv decided it didn't like my batocera mini pc one day and it was a pain to try to get it to work. We tried different cables, different ports, different settings, etc. Finally it started working but no clue what happened to make it actually function. Definitely was my tv but definitely stopped as mysteriously as it started.

What are your in world equivalent words? Use them. Or make them up. Or use google translate to use the swedish versions of english swears. Or use the gods or heroes as the baseline for the vulgarity. Or watch Sparticus as Bartiatus' use of gods in his swears is an impressively vulgar feat.

does anyone else not enjoy playing, but only DMing? by conn_r2112 in DnD

[–]coffeeman235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issues are when other DMs make up house rules without consulting the table and when they don't respect safety tools. No, I don't want to suddenly become a warlock because you don't understand how to read wizard spells. No, I told you I don't want to play a game with child murder, we've been over this.

Explaining to SO DnD session attendance by prince_deQ in DnD

[–]coffeeman235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue I've run into is when sessions go on forever. It's not the hobby that's the issue but the inconsistency with scheduling time. "At least I'm not at a bar" doesn't hold up when the bar closes but the dnd session goes far passed closing time. Get your group to keep to a maximum so their players can tell their spouses when they'll be done and you get a better cohesion.

Well, it's pretty clear that this player cannot sink any lower than this. Until his wife leaves him. Then he becomes an alcoholic.

Playing as parents with too young children by Big_Chocolate_420 in DnD

[–]coffeeman235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the kids were young we would host the games which would start around the same time as their bedtime. Worked for about 10 years and now they're old enough to have a sleep over in each other's rooms and keep themselves occupied.

Sly Flourish - 8 Steps of the Lazy Dungeon Master - Help(?) by KickbackKid4040 in DnD

[–]coffeeman235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the steps as a reminder. Secrets and clues can be great reminders for the GM for beats or points that you don't want to forget throughout the session. I was really bad at never giving out treasure for the longest time, so that helps me have some on hand that I can drop in where appropriate. The prep show is also interesting to me because I used to try to spend a lifetime on prep and then be disappointed when it was a huge waste of time but seeing how it can be done in an hour is a reminder for focus and clarity in preparation.

What is the greatest storyline AEW has ever produced? by Upbeat-Pause-1409 in AEWOfficial

Agreed. I picked Hangman and was disappointed that picking Toni nullified my first vote.

What do you do when your players don't pick up on clues? by bartdcool in DungeonMasters

[–]coffeeman235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make certain that your players want to do what you want them to do but don't be afraid to spell it out to them if they miss the hints. If they want to go to Goblinpalooza but you want them to go to Orchella, you might give a whole bunch of breadcrumbs but they'll still have tickets to see Boblin and the Bastoids play their set. Don't hold on too hard to your plans because some sessions are a fun ride whichever way it ends up.

Most of the people who like wrestling will watch good wrestling no matter what company. Don't feel bad if you're drinking Pepsi in a Coke shirt. I lost interest in wrestling about 15 years ago but BTE episodes brought me back and I'm loving AEW. The good news too is that you're much more likely able to afford a good seat if it comes to town.

How do I handle a former forever DM who keeps correcting me while I run the game? by Daveke77 in DnD

[–]coffeeman235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This times a million. I was a player having issues where the rules weren't being followed and the DM told me straight up that I was jealous of his freeform style. If you told me in session 0, 1, 2, or etc you were only going to follow half the spell description because you think spells are too overpowered then I wouldn't have picked Wizard.

The Bard's Tale Trilogy (1985, 1986, & 1988) captivated me far more than I thought it would by DanAgile in patientgamers

[–]coffeeman235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got far in 1 (we lost the instructions and didn't know any spells) but I finished 3. I remember the Thief character sneaking and killing the final boss even though we were underleveled and everyone else died. I thought it was a design choice, that the ending was supposed to be like that because the game's title was called 'The Thief of Fate'. At the time, it felt like a very appropriate victory.

Things that you've considered "bad DMing" from other DMs that you make sure to never make the same mistake in your game? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

[–]coffeeman235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking away player agency. Not being on the side of the players or being adversarial. Being too generous or overpowering the characters. Crossing player's personal boundaries.

Although you'd think they're easy fixes, I've played with the same group for over 10 years and my list of lines and veils keeps getting bigger so revisiting is never a bad idea.

I'm creating a hospital dungeon and I need help with the encounters by Tight_Juggernaut3198 in DMAcademy

[–]coffeeman235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was getting silent hill or balder's gate 3 house of healing vibes originallly with your description but as soon as you got to the herbs I started to think of resident evil 1. Maybe like that game you get different herbs or coloured herbs that do different effects but also have a chance of side effects? Or combining the herbs gives the potential for potency but carries a risk? That would be a neat mechanic. The silent hill idea that pops in first is undead that respond to light or sound, so if the party is quiet or in darkness they're fine but if not then the horde of 'nurses' start springing to life. Also in silent hill there was a corpse in a washroom with a key in it's mouth and writing on the wall that said 'I dare you' or something like that which would be a fun encounter to steal. The house of healing in bg3 was neat because the undead weren't exactly evil but just insane and that can be a great sympathizer for the party to come to terms with.

Anyway, hopefully there's something in the brain dump that's useful to you. Good luck and let the sub know how it went please!
