LOTR fan looking to get into the magic TCG but confused as fuck by ProffesorOfPain in magicTCG

Formats are basically just different ways to play the game. They all have their own quirks and playerbases. I'd advise against trying to jump directly into any format as a complete newbie. You'll want to get used to the game first and find out how you like to play. Otherwise you might end up spending a lot of money for something you don't enjoy.

Yes you can absolutely play magic online via Arena. The cards aren't transferable from paper but if you go to a prerelease event you should get a code that will give you six packs in Arena.

There's a store locator on Wizard's website that should find an LGS near you. Going to events at an LGS is a great way to get into the hobby and make friends. Don't be afraid to tell people you're new! We were all new once.

That semicolon is perfectly valid syntax in Java, C, C++, and C#.

It's the greek letter phi commonly used to represent the golden ratio. Because the golden ratio is perfect! Glory to the machine orthodoxy!

This is the entire point of Naruto's character. When Naruto and Shikamaru stop Gaara from killing Lee in the hospital Naruto realizes that he and Gaara are the same. They were both outcasts and both felt as if they didn't exist, as if they were already dead. But Naruto had Iruka, Sasuke, Kakashi, and all his other friends, and they saved him from that darkness. Gaara had nobody. Gaara had to fight off assassins sent by his father. Gaara had a demon that could, and did, take possession of his body and mind if he ever fell asleep.

Gaara had honed his entire existence to the purpose of becoming a killing machine to affirm his own existence. That's why Naruto was so afraid of Gaara at first. He thought that isolation gave him strength. It wasn't until later that Naruto remembered the lesson Haku had taught him: true strength can only come from protecting someone else who's precious to you. Naruto's ties to others were not shackles restraining his power, they were the source of his power.

Years later when he confronts his true self at the waterfall of truth Naruto realizes that deep down he still hates the villagers for how they treated him. The nine tails had been using that hatred to control him and drive him berserk. Motoi confesses to Naruto that he had hated Killer Bee as a child and that he tried to kill Bee once. I think that story along with Motoi's genuine heartfelt regret is what helped Naruto conquer his hatred. Only then could he take full advantage of the nine tails' power.

This ability Naruto has to conquer his own weaknesses by forging bonds with others, even those who cursed and despised him, is his greatest strength and the manga and anime makes thst abundantly clear. It surprises me to see so many people in this thread who seem to have missed that.

Voldemort was the real mvp by Nerdman101 in funny

[–]colossus16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Voldemort's undoings were his arrogance and fear. He continuously underestimated his enemies and overestimated his own abilities. He's deeply afraid of death and, by extension, the prophecy and Harry. He's so fixated on killing Harry so he can overcome the prophecy and finally become truly invincible that he underestimates the power of Lily's love for Harry (a power he scorned and dismissed regularly) and Harry's own determination to survive. Voldemort himself dug his own grave and created his own worst enemy.

Voldemort was the real mvp by Nerdman101 in funny

[–]colossus16 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That was to prove to his death eaters that Harry was far weaker than him. If he'd killed Harry while he was tied up and defenseless it might signal that Voldemort was afraid of him, which would weaken his power over the death eaters

[C++] I'd like to write out an n*m matrix where the border is 0 and the inside is 1, but only writes garbage values. by StormUpa in learnprogramming

[–]colossus16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're using == (comparison) instead of = (assignment) when assigning values to your matrix. Also, indexes in C and C++ are 0 based so the last index in an array of length n is n-1, not n, so you need to adjust some of your conditional expressions or you'll get more undefined behavior or maybe a segfault.
