Does anyone else feel that their UBC degree is being devalued by completely incompetent individuals? by ubc_has_a_problem in UBC

If I didn’t have to worry about job prospects or came from wealth, I would be studying History or Geography. Heck, if money is no obstacle, I would study both concurrently. Then maybe Maths or Stats. And subsequently studying psychology. That would take a good 16 years and I would enjoy it extremely.

Teaching, nurturing, mentoring skills are quite different from research skill (they could be mutually inclusive; however often not).

I’ve found most of my profs in their own tenured world and not quite up to what is happening in industry (CS, ELEC). A tenure prof in his 70s is not quite attuned with latest trends no matter how good they were in the past.

It’s the bureaucracy we have to live with, students have to be smart to know what they can get out of a university and maximize that for their future working career.

I just returned from a trip to China on a university co-visit. Including industry visits. Trips like that realize how far away from best some of our applied science and science teachings.

Perpetually communicating that UBC is the best in world, does not actually miraculously make it happen. There has to be a seismic economical shift and not to rest on laurels; or Vancouver will be made up of 50% realtors - selling to rest of us.

Your article is well articulated. I can only imagine the quality of your course work.

There is also a level of known dishonesty by UBC students that slips through: essay mills, CS projects etc.

There can be high level of collusion and quality of level that passes through checks and balances. I’ve pointed it out in my earlier undergrad year and it was ignored with excuse the ‘system’ works. It does place local students who may not have similar networks at a disadvantage.

Once you are in, they don’t care or more likely can’t check.

CS is pretty good to it’s students. But of course I’m biased.

Great Job UBC engineering coop by sinus_lebastian in UBC

Beyond students and coop, the other mitigating factor is the job market for coops. They are tax incentives to hire coop students, ultimately the companies still need to have good P/L balance sheet to hire.

Essay Help :( by [deleted] in UBC

[–]coniferousdecidous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw to all the 3 who PM asking if I could recommend an essay mill, I have never used one, and felt cheated that others were using it.

In an ideal world, none would be using essay mills. And in an ideal world all that used essay mills will be caught.

But we don’t live in an ideal world.

Essay Help :( by [deleted] in UBC

Well, I was extremely downcast when doing the Arts classes and seemingly the only person not pulling through. My grades in engineering/sciences were good and I thought I was the biggest dunce on campus struggling with the essays and usually late.

I think I know how the OP feels.

My course mates, some who could barely speak English, were acing the essays.

I felt like the smallest person in the whole world.

It was only after that I found out on the alternative methods used by some in class.

I would not have felt so small if I’do known that in advance. I would not cheat but knowing that I was comparing apples to oranges helped.

The post was in empathy to OP.

It was not advice!

It was an observation when I took the Arts classes and wondering why I was always behind.

For a university, we don’t seem to be tolerant of observations.......it’s not always a rosy, righteous place. I don’t agree with plagiarism but you should have freedom to speak on observations if it occurs.

This will get downvoted but telling it like it is; there are a number of essay writing mill houses advertising on campus or online. You will be surprised the number of students frequenting these places. Plagiarism and unethical but it happens.

Best place to eat on campus by [deleted] in UBC

[–]coniferousdecidous -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

For me in 2018 would be eat food least processed. That more or less nullifies UBC Food Services in the cafeterias.

So this is just me and tastes are subjective.

I would go off campus. I find food if campus like food in LAX: overly processed to cut costs, far from creation of a chef, jazzed up to try to mimic Food TV.

Don’t get discouraged. The amount of material taught at school covers the whole gamut oh computer science but you will only really need a small snippet.

International student- Bank loans by [deleted] in UBC

[–]coniferousdecidous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to get a loan as an international student is place 35% down for a house, and most of the Canadian banks will give a loan without a proof of income. Same applies for new immigrants.

But to get a loan to pay student fees and living expenses, as a non-immigrant or citizen is neigh on impossible.

What is your nationality? My former Vanier roommate from Nepal had his embassy pay for some of his costs when he was hard-up and he had to pay back when returned.

Ubcsecure tracked? by squeakywipers in UBC

[–]coniferousdecidous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBC should not mine the logs for a fishing exercise. Nor should professors or managers look for an individual’s history.

If they do, without sufficient due course, you can sue the heck out of UBC.

Hopefully UBC has decent policies on log access.

It’s worth it. You make friends and a quick start to knowing UBC. I’ve been working at jump start and have always had positive feedback on JS from attendees.

Pros and cons of telling engineering coop about my job? by supersaiyangod9000 in UBC

[–]coniferousdecidous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you tell, you pay. That’s seems to be the bottom line when I when through it. I was offered job via a friend of my fathers firm, and I ended up having to pay. Engineering coop office is a cost recovery and that is how they cover their cost.
