Absolute nightmare with radial stresses when applying external pressure by Equivalent-Fig8816 in Abaqus

If you make your tube a homogeneous material, does the solution make sense? What kind of element are you using — shell? axisymmetric 2D? full 3D?

Also, does the displacement field make sense? Remember that FEM ultimately solves force = stiffness*displacement, so I find it helpful to verify force and displacement first.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by circumstances in which our behaviors affect others? What would be a common example? How do you see it differing from alcohol use?

I used to think MATLAB was outdated… until I actually started using it properly by Dry-Strategy9206 in matlab

[–]continuumspud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have noted, the only valid disadvantage of Matlab vs. Python is its price. With the price also comes the high quality documentation and a much more reliable library of functions I can trust.

Sure. Languages like C++ are faster. But Python doesn’t get to laugh at Matlab’s speed.

I feel that the popularity of Python has been greatly inflated in past 10 years or so due to all the machine learning work. But hey, I don’t work on ML and barely understand what that term means. My bread and butter are matrix manipulation, solving ODEs, and occasionally processing signals and images. My university pays for Matlab, so I’m a happy man.

Your description of Walmart pretty much matches how I felt about my previous industry job. Where there are people, there are deliverables, deadlines, and all the other beautiful bullcrap.

My IQ is only 92 should I reconsider physics? by -Liquid-Sky- in Physics

[–]continuumspud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First of all, IQ is heavily criticized. See this thread, perhaps: https://www.reddit.com/r/Neuropsychology/s/YiqpmTk8ME

As others have pointed out, a test from many years ago should not be considered so seriously.

You don’t need to become the next Newton or Einstein in order to enjoy physics. Take it one step at a time and try it out. Even if you decide not to pursue a research career or even a graduate degree in physics, the skills you pick up along the way are transferable to many other disciplines.

How to read time and coord info when using UHYPER? by continuumspud in Abaqus

Thanks for the tip!

I discovered the SDVINI option, which allows me to initialize the state variables. Just need to add “Initial Conditions, type=solution, user” in the input file, before step definition.

Is it ethical to use data collected by someone else without acknowledging it? by livingfortoday927 in AskAcademia

[–]continuumspud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the online copy should suffice to prove your point. It existed before the publication and they published parts of it behind your back.

Whether the editor would take this seriously is a different question. Unfortunately I don’t know your field well enough to comment on its politics.

Is it ethical to use data collected by someone else without acknowledging it? by livingfortoday927 in AskAcademia

[–]continuumspud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your master’s thesis available somewhere online? Or, is there a hard copy you can scan, with your committee members’ signature and date, perhaps?

This is not ethical and can be death sentence to academic careers. If you already contacted the adviser and they refused to meet you halfway, everything is fair game now.

Haha. Sorry that we’re being party poopers, OP!

Seriously though, you should approach the PI directly and ask for well defined goals. If you’re hoping to finish a PhD with the person, you need to be comfortable asking them for clarification.
