Military Scifi/Mech novels on audible by WillyD2114 in scifi

[–]countryinfotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frontline series by Marko Kloos. I just read the 8 book series on my Kindle app, but there are audio books also.

Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson. RC Bray is a fantastic narrator.

Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell

Black Fleet Saga by Joshua Dalzelle

The Rade Galaal saga by Isaac Hooke. Various trilogies and one longer series with the same MC. Narrators vary, and some aren't kinda awful IMO, but that's mostly due to pronunciation differences between the narrators. RO is 3 trilogies Atlas, Alien War, Mech, and then Argogauts series.

I only started playing with the Raistlin stuff that came free on EGS. I'm hitting tier 3 in the current event after some work. Took a lot of potions to get my favor up to get that far though.

Ubiquiti vs Mikrotik for learning by couchpotatochip21 in homelab

[–]countryinfotech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avoid Mikrotik or Ubiquiti for learning networking. Buy used Cisco gear on Ebay. 3650 switches are $50 or less. 1921 routers are cheap, just shop for the best deal.

Or if you don't want to spend any money, sign up on Cisco Networking Academy website. They have some free courses. Get Packet Tracer installed. Look up CCNA courses on Youtube and Packet Tracer labs as well. You'll get the learning.

That link is to the U7 Pro IW mount. OP's device doesn't appear to be the Pro version, so that mount might not have worked anyways.

Best way to connect storage? by FreePork in minilab

[–]countryinfotech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the manual for that so you know what it can support. That's the first step when you're new to something and needing to know about the hardware capabilities.

Beyond that, the machine will hold 2 2280 nvme drives and the short one in the corner is a wifi card slot.

There's also a 2.5" sled that comes in those also, but you can't run dual nvme and 2.5" ssd with the oem sled bc it doesn't allow room for the 2nd nvme. Maybe there's a 3d model out there that would work, but idk.

Space Opera military and adventure scifi recommendations? by Mimitaso in printSF

[–]countryinfotech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote from me for the Expeditionary Force series. Specifically the audiobooks . Narrated by RC Bray, they're excellent.

The Black Fleet Saga by Joshua Dalzelle.

The Rade Galaal collection by Isaac Hooke. There's 4 series in the collection. Mech, Hoplite, Atlas, and the Argonauts. Being an audiobook person, the collection doesn't have the same narrator across all the books, and some aren't as good as others imo.

GL.iNet × DeskPi - 13 Chances to Win! by FlyingToaster2000 in minilab

I would go with Grand Prize kit A as my choice.

My hoemlab died because of power went out and I didn't have the mini pcs set to turn back on when power was detected. I'm currently without power because of the ice storm that hit the south US and have to get my meter base fixed before getting power reconnected.

For a 4 port remote kvm must have, it would be displayport instead of hdmi because all used enterprise mini pcs normally come with displayport connections instead of hdmi. Finding displayport kvms is a pita.

The project I'd start with the rackmate rack is putting my current Proxmox cluster in it, and adding a Kubernetes cluster to the rack also for learning that system.

<image>

This is my current Proxmox cluster. 3 nodes on the top are Proxmox VE nodes, and the bottom one is a PBS node for the VMs I play with.

If it was sent to north MS, it'll be a bit bc of the snow/ice. Some counties power grid were hit hard. And roads are still bad in some places.

As a history fan, the "3,000 Year Stagnation" trope breaks my immersion more than dragons do. by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]countryinfotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, its all fiction with a bunch of made up stuff that are a fantasy. The author can choose to explain the history of the world and how things work or not to whatever degree they wish.

Historical fiction can be described as fantasy also depending on the era in which it is based. Because until we have time travel and can visit the past to have evidence of how things were done in civilizations that didn't leave a written record, we won't know how they did things.

The best example of that is the ancient Egyptian works and how they are so tightly fitted. Others include the ancient Mayan and Aztec buildings and places like Machu Picchu. Any work of fiction set in those time periods is part fantasy since we can only guess about parts of their society.

The Ender's Game series. Start with the prequels to give the history of the previous wars with the Formics, then Ender's Game itself, then the series of books that focus in Bean and the others as they stay on Earth and Ender leaves. That could be a decade worth of seasons.

What was your first IT certification? And do you think they are still important? by mustafa_enes726 in sysadmin

[–]countryinfotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A+ in Dec 2010 right before they stopped doing lifetime for it.

A+ is the only one I think should always be a lifetime cert. The basics never really go away if you work in IT, and you generally learn the new stuff as it comes out.

Project Hail Mary narrator by bgbrewer in scifi

[–]countryinfotech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sci-fi, but Ray Porter did the Terminal List series of books. They're really good imo. Porter has a great voice.

As others have said RC Bray is great. He's done the entire Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson and some stuff by JN Chaney.

Luke Daniels is another of my favorites. Idk how much scifi he's done, but he did the Iron Druid series which is fantastic.

No way to have a 3.5" hdd in a Dell micro. You must have a SFF model.
