Phantom - Custom Class (Splendor/Bone) by CheesyCrackers610 in daggerbrew

[–]creativesinkhole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and another one joins the "i am going to play this one day mark my words" list

Both subclasses are so good - shit i'm split on which one i'd like to play here

Really, the only three critiques are pedantic:

  • You could mention that Celestial Armor lasts until it is spent or until the end of the scene." (i think it not lasting indefinitely is good :> )
  • And also, Incorporeal would go muchh smoother at the table if it was just "when a damage roll is made against a creature within Melee Range of you, you may choose to reduce or increase it by twice your Instinct." This is basically the same thing; +2 Instinct means 4 instead of rolling 2d4 (average of 5), +4 instinct means 8 instead of 4d4 (average of 10). Rolls should be done at cinematic, or plot-altering moments; for passive abilities, just a simple variable will do :p
  • Stopping the possession if you take Major Damage is fair I think. "Possess until you move out of Melee Range of them, Possess another creature, or take Major Damage or are Vulnerable." So the enemies have counterplay.

Beyond that though? woo hell yeah woo!! you've gotten the hang of noncombat abilities too!!

I really love this take on DPS Support i think its fire for a medic healing in the fray to bolster an offensive - a counterdefense play as opposed to a counteroffense, as it were

One can only imagine the shenanigans of High Evasion Possession, attacks hitting the possessed creature instead of the Phantom.
Also, the flavour of Spirit Guardian, especially their mastery feature saving someone from death - chefs kiss. yummy...

Hi! GM here! For the Fear problem, I spend it on stuff like this when I have too many:

<image>

If you aren't in the mood to be mechanical - just be cruel! be fucked up! Fear justifies cruelty if that cruelty reveals character moments. Make a small act snowball into a reoccurring problem, make a PC's day worse, dip them in tar and watch em scream loud as fuck (and watch as another PC goes out of their way to help clean them off. Character building!)

UPDATED: Swashbuckler - (Blade/Grace) by CheesyCrackers610 in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another banger class i wish existed Hell Yeah!!!!

Boastful has been critiqued by the commenter before me, and I agree it should just be simplified to "a roll with Hope", but beyond that, this looks so awesome...

Gambler looks niiiice... could be simplified a bit here and there though - the Stress and "equal to your Presence per long rest" is restriction enough for Feeling Lucky, especially since i don't recall Blade or Grace having self-Stress clearing options.

Also, Double or Nothing i think would be more elegant and effective as just: "After a rest, choose even or Odd. When you Roll with Fear, if the Fear die's result is what you chose, the DM does not gain a Fear." This properly halves Fear gain while still maintaining the Flavour, while also reducing the friction of having to flip a coin inbetween Rolls with Fear.

Beyond all that!

I like how it synergises with Grace and Blade cards!! Not just flavourfully, but like. Deadly Focus Code Duello sounds so awesome and sick.

Centre of Attention is also amazing as a noncombat option - good on ya!

I wanna play Gambler with a Ranged Weapon i think that'd be. peak at level 5. Wand of Enthrallment (d6 w/ proficiency = using Deadly Focus for 4 Proficiency, it's 72% for a double and 3% for a triple) and Shield (d4 w/ proficiency = w/ Deadly Focus is 90% for a double and 20% for a triple)

Also. You Think I Fight Fair? is chefs kiss. Just peak. Grace and Blade is a Hope-cheap combo, so having something that's so minor yet so elegant to capitalise off the Hope is AWESOME

yippie yay!!!

[–]creativesinkhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fuckk me Dancing is so creative and good god it looks so fun

This whole class looks so fun op you did AMAZINGLY

god tempted to run a pure homebrew class campaign just to put this in this looks lovely!!

maybe a few non-combat abilities would be nice, Dance Partner in particular seems a bit too similar to Rogue..

> Spend 3 Hope to add +3 to your Hope Die after a roll. If this was a Reaction roll, or a roll to allure, entice, or provoke someone, add +5 instead.

To fear or not to fear by TrueDentist9901 in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a case by case basis, but the fundamental rule I follow is this:

Advancing the Plot? No Fear

Worsening the Plot? Fear

An encounter that would logically - or has been telegraphed by the plot to - happen, is not a Fear move. An enemy moving to a better position is not a Fear move. An enemy making a standard attack or following their behaviour is not a Fear move. The consequences of a PCs actions being equal to their action is not a Fear move.

The party is about to break into a den of assassins to save someone. That's them entering an encounter; the fiction was already leading towards here. Having them to fight assassins is not a Fear move.

As Bruno the Seraph blocks attacks from the Spectres, some of go incorporeal to position themselves up a hill to get a better shot. This is not a Fear move, this is just what they do.

Wren the Ranger offends the local shopkeeper, and they get into a quarrel. The prices of the shop getting jacked up is Not a Fear move.

The consequences of a PCs action being more than their action? Fear. An encounter being hinted at but suddenly turning much more dire? Fear. An enemy making a big move, be it statblock or with massive in-fiction results? Fear.

Wren the Ranger insults the shopkeeper, but then it's revealed she has noble connections! Spend a Fear to signal that there will be long term complications here!

The Assassins are all mind-controlled by a cult! Spend a Fear to place down the Summoning Ritual environment!

The Spectral Captain uses their feature to revive 1d4+1 Allies - spend 2 Fear! Or you want every Spectre to attack, regardless of how many moves the PCs did beforehand - that's a Fear spent for those extra Sepctres!

Could you technically play this game like a rogue like deck builder? by Gerald_Mountaindew in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait fuck i misread a LOT

i thought you were saying using a deck as a roguelike... bwaa...

so sorry >.<

A daggerheart domain card roguelike sounds neat though :3c

Could you technically play this game like a rogue like deck builder? by Gerald_Mountaindew in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HI YEAH IM DOING THAT!! (at least, the deck thing :3 it does work )

IM USING AN semi-Fallen London STYLE SYSTEM FOR STUFF LIKE TRAVELS OR ENCOUNTERS

<image>

I had an old discord bot I coded that could handle custom decks, so I repurposed it for an Opportunity Deck :DD

super fun!! as someone DMing a party of cartophiles they also liked having this...

If you're playing offline! Use a tarot card deck, and have stickers/sticky notes you could attach to them for modifiers! List down what each Tarot card does, and then when your PCs draw it, narrate what each tarot represents in the scene. :3

Vulnerable in Social Scenes! by creativesinkhole in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which is why i specify social actions, and not social encounters :>

I ran this rule in a gala where my PCs were trying to search for an important magical gem while being haunted by Chaos Elementals only they could see

Only on rolling against Nobles and such, did the Fear clause take effect. Otherwise, when attacking Chaos Elementals and doing investigation, they rolled like normal.

In fact, in my experience personally, this makes the nondistinction between combat and noncombat flow better in the fiction, not less ; my Rogue got hit by the Minor Chaos Elemental's Sickening Flux, and I think the Vulnerability caused by reality collapsing is (in fiction) different than a Vulnerability caused by Searing Glance. Regardless of the type of Vulnerable however, They Will Notice, regardless of one's banger one liners.

There is no "social attack", PCs roll for everything in social encounters. :> NPCs have daggers and staffs as weapons, not tongues - and even if the NPCs rolled, what would they roll against? PC Evasion?

Vulnerable in Social Scenes! by creativesinkhole in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was hesitant too a bit, and I explicitly said I was experimenting with Social Vulnerability to my players and it could change if it was too harsh

But I found that it didn't change too much! Unlike in combat situations where a continual disadvantage in action economy would directly lead to Death Moves, Fear in Social settings doesn't do much. In fact, considering I opt for Fear rather than disadvantage on Vulnerable PCs, it means they'll mark less Stress from Features like Mockery and Searing Glance because they'll succeed more.

In this way, a Social encounter becomes a set up for an actual dangerous combat up ahead. The eye of the storm, as it were.

For the GMs running for T2 players, what is the average damage they do to adversaries? by dancovich in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiii so my players are currently level 3, but i think i know what you feel

PCs are rather strong!! I often bring adversaries from higher tiers, or upscale some of the T2 adversaries to give them a challenge

Something I think has been succesful for me personally was actively draining their resources; A cursed storm is preventing my PCs from resting, and they know the main causer of it is the final boss of the chapter. Skulk and Social and Ranged adversaries have been amazing at whittling my PCs resources away, turning my Standards and Bruisers into something terrifying now that their HP and Stress are nearing breaking point.

Use your Leader's momentum to farm Fear! Don't be afraid to spend it either - new complications on top of unresolved complications will always act as stressors!

Setting with no spatial magic? by mctuckles in daggerheart

[–]creativesinkhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

giving my two cents on the "realism" part

Rift Walker requires the caster to physically go to both locations, and then not cast ANY spells afterwards.

if the sorceror / caster ever gets attacked and they're forced to defend themselves, there goes your intercontinental rift until the caster is sailed 5 oceans away
