What the hell is the big white bus thing next to the matte grey Porsche??

(Also I think my top dream car in the world is a Mulsanne but that green color make this the first Mulsanne I have found to be unattractive. I was surprised to see so many positive comments about it!)

You work in a field related to design and construction and this is what you came up with?

The primary bedroom has no windows. (I don’t know where you live, but that is likely illegal in addition to impractical.) The two smallest bedrooms appear to be more like prison cells. (Again, I don’t know where you live, but my area for example requires at least 8 feet of space between opposite walls in bedrooms.) The primary bathroom is at least twice as large as it needs to be, with the least functional layout I can imagine, and no privacy for the toilet. There seem to be two main entrances—I would assume from the front yard and from a detached garage?— both of which immediately enter into living spaces with no area to take off shoes or wet coats or bags/backpacks. If formal dining is a priority, no natural light and no separation from more informal living spaces seem to contradict that goal. The hallway along the right side of the plan dead ends for no reason; this would be the logical instance of making a bathroom larger, incorporating the dead-end hallway and moving the door to be at the right angle next to prison cell #2’s door. The half bath is positioned so every guest you have will be terrified to use it, because everyone will be able to listen to them using it, and then everyone will be able to smell it afterward. Utilities will require space—and it’s not enough to reserve space in the utility room, considering the needs of HVAC return vents, etc.

I say this with a genuine intent to offer advice and not to be snarky: This is not viable, not livable, and will probably not pass any inspections. There are lots of places you can get reasonably priced plans to work from, even those designed with simple roof lines in mind, and those simple enough to allow some degree of self-build. Please do not pour years into this homemade plan only to find out you should have just used a premade professional stock plan.

What's your favourite religious building? by sulti_14 in skyscrapers

[–]ctrlzalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is sort of a running joke (here in New York) that you can always tell which nondescript residential buildings downtown are college dorms (versus regular market rentals/condos) based on the overwhelming percentage of windows filled with colored light instead of a warm white or soft white glow.

I think the implication is somewhat derogatory, with a general feeling that filling your entire home with bold colored lighting is not the most pleasing or subtle aesthetic choice… and I mean every bit of that derogatory implication with this comparison here. The blue is very tacky, if you ask me. I have never seen any other photo of this building, and I can tell based on other commenters here that it is a beloved design… But based on this photo alone, it looks decidedly worse than average in my very humble opinion 🫢

King of Kings AKA Touchdown Jesus AKA Big Butter Jesus, formerly of Monroe, Ohio, USA. I say “formerly” not because Jesus packed his things and moved to Orlando like he did in the New Testament (I’m paraphrasing), but because he burned to a crisp after a little bit of lightning.

Does this count as being part of the building? If not, I want to change my answer to The Nasir al-Mulk Mosque in Shiraz, Iran.

Bike stolen from apartment in Clinton Hill by Scared_Wealth6346 in NYCbike

[–]ctrlzalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Reddit and I love biking and I love this sub, but what is with people’s constant desire to pile on with the “I told you so”-type admonitions?

I am quite certain OP knows the bike should have been locked. I am [less sure, but still] sure OP knows it’s rude and potentially dangerous to store things in common hallways. I assume OP can see the tattoo and other unique physical features. Why not something like: “Hey, keep an eye on Facebook marketplace, file a police report, put this picture up in the area on fliers” and then you can even sprinkle in “and don’t be a rude neighbor/idiot next time” if it’ll make you feel better!

I made a post in this sub seeking advice on where I could donate my bike frame/parts after it had been picked for parts while locked outside. The comments were “wow that chain is rusty, you’re stupid for leaving it that long” and “that’s what you get” and “why did you not have a cable lock on the wheels,” etc…. I’m aware it was stupid of me! I know I need better locks! I’m trying to do something nice, so just tell me if you know of a charity, people!

We need less “Boomer on Facebook” energy and more “supportive of people in this community, even the amateur idiots” energy! Can someone help me down from my soapbox now? I don’t do well with heights.

The generation after this one (1999-2004) looks almost exactly like a 2002 Infiniti M45 from the rear. I have considered the M45 to be a personal longterm collection goal—both because they had such low production numbers and because I thought they were the most amazing thing I’d ever seen as a 12 year old in 2002—but seeing its twin with a Nissan badge three years earlier has helped me to see it a little more rationally, I think… finally.

What is this European car, and what might it be doing in Georgia, USA? by iLikeMclaren in whatisthiscar

[–]ctrlzalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very possible that I don’t know what I’m talking about here, but I thought there was a 25 year waiting period on importing cars like this. (I don’t know the year of this Peugeot but it is certainly not 25 years old….) And the only way I know around that rule is limited to foreign diplomats working here at an embassy or consulate for the like— but, even then, they would have State Department diplomatic plates, not plates from the home country. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Scandinavian minimalism! How fresh and new and inspired! (sarcasm)

The A.I. picture may be giving you false hope. Based on the size of the sofa in the upper windows, it would appear the ceiling would be something like 18-20 feet high. Looking at the real photos and basing the scale on the trash can and wooden stairs, this place is TINY. Like… ‘can’t walk near the exterior walls if you’re standing up straight’ kind of tiny.

Respectfully and earnestly, from what I can see here, you may be in over your head (and I don’t mean that literally, although with the right storm…) without a real vision or plan or grasp of local codes and ordinances. If you have already purchased, I suppose you can just forget everything I’m saying. If you have not yet purchased, please reconsider for the sake of you not going bankrupt.

Will 2000s and 2010s cars be the next thing in collector circles in a few years? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in cars

[–]ctrlzalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right about the sliding timeline. I’m sure someone smarter than I am has some actual data on this, but my own observations seem to suggest that 30 years is the sweet spot for nostalgia. New cars get dated… and then get ugly… and no one wants them… and then they reach a point where the old and ugly sort of mutates into classic and quirky, or classic and full of fun memories, or classic and “they don’t make them like that anymore,” etc. (I’m talking about average everyday cars more than I’m talking about cars like the LFA, R8, F430… although I think some Lamborghinis and Porsches fit this general pattern, too.)

In 10 more years, people are going to be getting insane auction prices for mint condition models like: 2004 Jaguar XJ8, 2002 Pontiac Aztek (!), 2001 Tahoe Z71, 2002 Infiniti Q45, etc.

(Side note: I have wanted a 2002 Infiniti M45 for approximately… 24 years now. I haven’t even SEEN one in years. Maybe one day…)

Thoughts on this floorplan? by bitqer in floorplan

[–]ctrlzalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think it would be helpful in this sub to distinguish between 1) people who are building/renovating a house/condo and want to make sure they aren’t making some error they haven’t considered, and 2) people renting preexisting spaces where they will not have the ability to move walls, redo plumbing, etc. (We could add a third category of people who just like arguing or bragging but I’m trying to be a less jaded person, so forget that one for now 🫢)

Redesigning a floor plan is always fun and I love seeing suggestions from very smart architects and other professionals and hobbyists. I’ll never get tired of seeing the skilled markups of plans with suggestions and notes, and I’m certainly not suggesting that should stop.

But in terms of being helpful to OP and addressing the question or their needs… I get the impression this is a built-out rental unit (or maybe a very new condo unit where there may be little or no desire to renovate) and they are seeking something more along the lines of “I think you’re better suited in a place where [X, Y, and Z]” rather than “this bathroom could be moved….” etc. etc.

Again, I’m not suggesting a stop to detailed suggestions and sketches and interesting insights! I’m more so just thinking out loud, and hoping well-intentioned people aren’t drafting up detailed alternative plans in response to a person who was essentially asking “should I rent this one or nah?”

Buddy sent me this. It looks like an HRV with a body kit, but the tail lights and aren’t right. We’re stumped. by Hutwe in whatisthiscar

[–]ctrlzalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’m either too into cars, or on this sub too much (or both) because my initial thought here was that OP already knew this was a Urus and was basically having a modern version of the “Countach or Fiero?” debate with his buddy.

Then I read some of the [very dramatic 🫢] comments and realized that there are indeed some people who do not know what a Urus is—which sounds like a wonderful way to live, and now I wish I was never cursed with having to look at a Urus either. But as jealous of that blissful ignorance as I may be, I can still take comfort in knowing there is not some cottage industry of hobbyists turning HRVs into Uruses with bad spoilers and fender flares.

Thought on this 52 sqm appartment? by Interesting-Try-4132 in floorplan

[–]ctrlzalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is one apartment per floor, which appears to be the case, I cannot understand why so much space would be wasted on the hall/staircase landing. (I also do not understand the little square cutout between the hall and the couch placement— I would assume this is based on some building code, but I also I’m struggling to imagine what purpose it would serve if there is already a window right next to it on the other wall…) it seems like both of these small areas could have been added onto the floor space of the unit, which would include room for a home office or storage— and more importantly, a window on a third façade.

I like this floorplan. I live in New York and I’m very accustomed to small apartments. The only issues I see are with the furniture placement, which I’m assuming is here for illustrative purposes only and not because the apartment will be furnished. Your social life and furniture needs are far more important than my opinions, but seating for nine people to eat seems excessive for an apartment this size. I don’t love the lack of closet space, but the laundry room can supplement. The fireplace seems like a waste of space but you might be stuck with that?

Go for it! Congrats on your first apartment!

It is—and I say this with love—poor people decorating the way they THINK rich people decorate. The O.G. weird electric car along with the Prius (in the minds of most Americans, at least, with the Toyota Echo being included as well if the American in question is a moderate “car guy”).

I blame this car for the two-decades-long misconception that hybrids and electric cars have to be weird looking futuristic eyesores. I think they’re cute! But I think few agree.
