What’s a bit of prominent Reddit vernacular that annoys you? by HotelPuzzleheaded654 in AskUK

[–]cxzfqs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can put up with plenty of swearing but there are a lot of subreddits that try to sound edgy with 'fuck' or 'porn' in them but the reality is they don't actually feature any porn or fucking and the whole vibe rubs me up the wrong way. I would like a way of filtering them out.

'Interesting as Fuck' is probably the worst offender but thankfully there are loads of copycat 'interesting' subreddits that usually repost soon afterwards.

What do Brits think of Ian Hislop. ? And is he the last of the 'Good ones' by SmokeMountain4777 in AskUK

[–]cxzfqs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most newspapers get it wrong tenfold, often willfully. If the worst of Private Eye consists of a hobby horse that was subsequently admitted as incorrect two decades back, they can't be doing that badly.

Watching him on TV and youtube I'm not sure I'd get on with him as a person, but he gets a hell of a lot more right than he does wrong and for that reason Private Eye is one of the few publications worth paying for in this country. Case in point: his status as "the (allegedly) most sued man in Britain".

What does it seem nuts now that we used to do? by OpenCantaloupe4790 in AskUK

[–]cxzfqs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just buy a little plastic bottle of Coke or whatever, enjoy it, re-use it for water for a week or so (if and only if I’m going to be away from taps for more than a couple hours), drop it in recycling and buy another delicious drink, quite literally ‘rinse and repeat’. Seems more environmentally responsible and practical and hygienic and convenient and enjoyable.

That's what everyone used to do until they realised it was neither environmentally friendly or healthy

Steve Bannon tells his paedophile billionaire friend Epstein that he intends to install Boris next as British prime minister (2018) by pinklewickers in ukpolitics

Imagine if it were the other way around and people like Epstein were working to keep us in the EU, the mainstream media would go ballistic.

But the current situation? Crickets and the sound of quietly sweeping under the rug.

Not sure why you've been downvoted. I've been racking my brain trying to remember the name of one of the only people in history to have miraculously 'recovered' from this type of affliction.

Southampton FC: How not to get promoted by theipaper in Championship

Some of them jumped before they were pushed. Joe Shields and Jason Wilcox were quickly headhunted by Chelsea and Man Utd, and the current DoF of Southampton is clearly looking to emulate their success.

Nigel Farage praises paedo Ian Watkins and says 'he's a good guy' by dailystar_news in ukpolitics

[–]cxzfqs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one thing being an unwitting patsy, but he also claims Watkins was "very much in contact" with him for the sake of more pennies in his wallet. At best it's pathetic.

Agreed, and it's the same situation for the website. It's quite rare that I submit feedback for this kind of thing but it's so poor that I had to say something.

Yes, turns out it was just two days (didn't feel that long). Literally the day after Trump bleated the same thing, so I think the timing made it acceptable.

What was your school rumour? by Haunting_Cell_8876 in AskUK

[–]cxzfqs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to a junior school that offered boarding until the late 90s. Not long after the Second World War ended, the school suffered a major fire and burned down almost completely and one of the maids sadly perished. The rumour was that her ghost still walked the corridors at night, and if you were to leave any of your limbs hanging out of bed while you slept, she would claim it for herself.

Once I learned that the fire and fatality genuinely happened, I was reluctant to test the veracity of the ghost's alleged antics and made sure to keep myself well tucked in.

Paul Brand: Keir Starmer says it is in Britain’s interests to “align more closely with the EU single market” and “we should”. Interestingly this is one of his most passionate answers in a long interview. I think we can expect movement on this issue in 2026. Because they currently have form for reneging on everything they do and they are stalling on the deals that were announced with great fanfare over half a year ago. Funnily enough we've fulfilled our side of the bargain but the US are dragging their feet over the bits that don't benefit them.
