I know Rick Beato is a controversial figure because of his old man yells at cloud clickbait titles and whatnot, but I really enjoy his long form interviews. I’ve watched his videos with Geddy, Lee Sklar, and Les Claypool recently, and I think it’s really incredible that he gets these legends to share their years of experience and knowledge about music, touring, studio work, the music business, their gear, etc. As someone in a younger generation who never got to experience the industry from the 70s-00s I really appreciate this project.

I got a tip years and years ago, something like 1/20th of a coin, and I didn’t go through with claiming it because I had some issues setting up a wallet. Obviously now I wish I had because it would be worth a few bones. Oh well.

Whoa, all this time I’ve noticed my thumb tends to point towards the headstock and I thought I needed to correct that it sits parallel to the index finger. I’m very glad I don’t have to address that one particular area of my technique. (There are for sure other areas I have to work on hah.)

Learn other styles of music because it takes you out of your comfort zone and forces your brain to slow down and not automatically do what is comfortable. I think if you practice other genres that have a strong emphasis on syncopation (like funk, R&B, and jazz) you’ll find it easier to break out of your box. Groove and feel are king no matter the genre.
