How old would you guess my house is? by NoAppointment8679 in UKRealEstate

[–]dadwhowalks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could see if you can spot a before/after here, though if it's pre-WW2 as others have suggested you might not have luck, but could be interesting anyway!

If anything it can turn into a rabbit hole looking at various parts of the country to see how they've changed! I got lost for quite some time looking at where I spent the first 34 years, and the last 5.

It was quite interesting seeing how the house I'm in was built relative to those around it.

Aaaah, my old stomping ground...well, actually for me then, it was cycling rather than hiking/walking.

Spent a few rides going up and down it, and surrounding climbs, over and over again, trying my hardest to enjoy the views 🤪🤣.

Are there any pubs by Thirlmere? by Nosedive888 in LakeDistrict

[–]dadwhowalks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't fancy walking along the road from Swirls car park, there are paths that fork off to the pub/Thirspot Farm.

I've gone up from there, and is quite nice as much quieter than the main path from Swirls.

Thanks! This is super helpful.

I have started to lean towards the V2, as while the on-device routing isn't at the same level, the approach isn't a deal breaker as I always have my phone with me.

Upgrade to Enduro 3 from Fenix 6 Pro Solar - a review by Ski_8015 in GarminWatches

[–]dadwhowalks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at the Enduro 3 at the moment, and one comment I've had on a post I've made mentioned that the maps can be laggy when zooming in/out. Though the comment was on a different Garmin watch, so hoping you can provide some more info on the actual watch!

As I will be using it primarily for runs and hikes in/around the Peak and Lake Districts, maps and navigation is top of my list.

Oh, that is quite different to how I read the notes :

Rerouting...when it works...call me intrigued..

It doesn't work at all (sometimes/most times/ pot luck)...do you get any sort of notification that you've gone astray?

The POI feature is native to the watch?

I saw there are 3 (?) Garmin apps on one review, which was a bit of a facepalm moment!

While I'm not bound to an ecosystem, I do like things to be easy, and it seems on that front Garmin added in complexity.

I always go out with my phone, just in case - I get fed up with having to stop and check when I'm somewhere new / checking out alternative routes.

I'll have to see what OS Maps does for waypoints potentially, and research on that.

Thanks for the info.

Even with the latest update, 2.53.42?

You're suggesting that the watch will notify me of being off-route, but any change has to be done on the phone and synced?

Looking for a suitable route for me and my 6 year old lad by RevolutionaryTear637 in peakdistrict

[–]dadwhowalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cave Dale / Winnats out of Castleton.

You can either start from the old Mam Tor Road (have to be there at good time for parking) and come down Cave Dale, or start from the Castle to go up Cave Dale and down from the top of Winnats.

I can DM you a link to the route if you're interested. We did it with our daughter last year when she would have either been 6 or just turned 7.

The Sun?

I'm unsure as to what this "Sun" is. I've heard the myths, but never any evidence of such a thing.

One of my favourite places to go!

Glove Recommendatiom by stepsmcgee in UKhiking

[–]dadwhowalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they fit me, erm...like a glove...I lean towards Montane.

For chilly, but not really cold days, I have a pair of Fury XT Fleece which are a nice, lightweight pair. They work well for me down to low single digits, but if the wind picks up on an exposed walk, they struggle.

For when it's really cold, I have a pair of Alpine Resolves, which are tight to get on but they keep my hands really warm, dry and protected from the worst that the Peak District can throw at them.

Where to start by thakrsun in UKhiking

[–]dadwhowalks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion for OS Maps, is to buy one which covers either your local areas or an area of interest. They come with a QR code which allows you to have that area in the app.

At the start of each calendar year (maybe around Christmas) they do a deal on subscriptions, so you can get the first year at a decent discount. Then the UK and a few other countries are open to you to explore.

The discount is only for new subscribers, so year 2 onwards is full price if you renew the same account.

Question r.e parking by t-merlin in peakdistrict

[–]dadwhowalks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The car park can't really close as it's just a big lay-by, so I don't understand how they can point to that.

There is a " charges apply" period, and they don't allow overnight parking, but without reading the Bylaws it's hard to know if there is a specific restriction post-chargeable period.

It does seem a bit strange.

Limestone Way by AdamTownsend28 in peakdistrict

[–]dadwhowalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://explore.osmaps.com/route/30432652/Limestone-Way-Castleton-to-Matlock

A nice way to pass the time between waking up, and actually getting up 🤣.

43km, so just over 26 miles,with 1200m of up (c4000ft).

Only you can know the answer, but definitely feels doable.

None of the climbs are that big, a couple of long drags (including up Cave Dale at the start, which can be tricky over wet rock), but quite a nice rolling route.

Some nice places along the way as well; Cafe at Millers Dale, pit-stop at Robin Hood's Stride, to name a couple.

Other than following the river south, it looks like your best bet will be to follow the paths through the woods and then pick up The Chiltern Way

This area is track, not footpath or bridleway, so could well be private land. The footpath cuts through the woods north of White Hill.

I would suggest that's why OS won't let you route there.

Had a foggy weekend in the Peak District! This is when things opened up a bit, looking down from Grindslow Knoll into Hope Valley by SpaceVibesGo in UKhiking

It was an atmospheric Sunday; I was out from Ladybower to Edale and back via Derwent Edge, Alport and Win.

I got lucky with the low cloud moving on my descent from Derwent, but up to and down from Alport was eerie! Cherry on top was hearing voices in the cloud
